摘要:詞匯學習貫穿英語學習的始終,如何提高詞匯學習的效率是語言教育工作者一直關注的焦點,而詞匯附帶習得是當前研究的一個熱點。本文把英語影視欣賞選修課程和詞匯的附帶習得有機結合起來,重點探討了如何引導學生進行詞匯附帶習得。

一、詞匯附帶習得提出的背景
根據《英語課程標準》,語言知識目標中的八級要求是:學會使用3300個左右的單詞和400-500個習慣用語或固定搭配。而九級的要求則更高。生詞量的急劇增大,使學生和教師的壓力倍增,傳統的機械性記憶單詞的方法已無法讓學生達到《英語課程標準》要求。近年來,隨著多媒體和網絡技術在語言教學中的廣泛應用,英文影視教學逐漸受到重視,是促進詞匯學習的一種新途徑。
二、英文影視欣賞課程和詞匯附帶習得的理論依據
1. 英文影視欣賞課程
英文影視欣賞課程是通過對經典英文影視的賞析,介紹相關背景,講解重點詞匯和句型,模仿經典臺詞和剖析影片所表現的主題,旨在培養學生審美情趣,開拓學生視野,提高在真實語境中的聽說能力和交際能力,加深他們對英美文化社會的了解。
2. 詞匯附帶習
該理論是由Nagy and Herman (1985)提出,是近20年來出現在應用語言學研究領域的新名詞。詞匯附帶性習得(IVA)是指學習者在完成其他學習任務時同時出現的認知活動,在詞匯學習過程中,學習者可以通過聽、說、讀、寫等活動附帶地習得詞匯。
在本文中,筆者想結合本校開展的英語選修課——經典英文影視欣賞,來談談在英文電影的觀看中如何關注詞匯的附帶習得并指導學生運用及進行相關的評價。
三、英文影視欣賞中詞匯附帶習得的原則
1. 材料選取
電影中的臺詞對白常常出現英語為本族語者日常生活中經常使用的句型、詞匯以及新的流行語,所以往往比現成的教科書更能夠及時、準確地傳播以英語為母語的人群的表達習慣。因此,教師應根據學生的實際情況,選擇發音較為清晰、語言難度適中、符合學生學習興趣和教學要求的影視作品。
2. 教學方式
傳統的詞匯教學是孤立的。學生只有死記硬背這一種習得方式,使他們感覺非常困難,而且總是背了就忘,積極性大大受挫。而在英文影視欣賞課程,具有下列優勢:“一是詞匯習得是在語境中進行的,能夠使學習者對詞匯的用法和意義理解得更深刻;二是詞匯習得效率會更高;三是詞匯學習個性化,因為習得的詞匯取決于學習者所選擇的語言材料。”
四、英文影視欣賞中詞匯習得、內化
以下筆者以本校英語選修課程《Forrest Gump經典賞析與模仿》為例來講講詞匯附帶習得、內化。
1. 英文影視欣賞中詞匯的習得
(1)利用語境猜測詞義
在影片(00:01:40-00:09:00)中,Mrs.Gump和小學校長有一段關于Forrest Gump是否是一名正常孩子的討論(材料1)。在欣賞這一段對話時,學生的講義上會重點加粗一些課標詞匯,讓他們利用上下的語境進行語義的猜測。
材料1:
Forrest: We lived about a quarter mile off Route 17, about a half mile from the town of Greenbow, Alabama. Thats in the county of Greenbow. Our house had been in Mamas family since her grandpas grandpas grandpa had come across the ocean about a thousand years ago. Since it was just me and Mama and we had all these empty rooms, Mama decided to those rooms , mostly to people passing through, like form Mobile, Montgomery, places like that. Thats how I and Mama got money. Mama was a real lady.
Mrs. Gump: Remember what I told you, Forrest. Youre no different than anybody else is.
Mrs. Gump: Did you hear what I said, Forrest? Youre the same as everybody else. (Principals office)
Principal: Your boys... different, Mrs. Gump. Now, his I.Q. is
.
Mrs. Gump: Well, we're all different, Mr. Hancock.
Principal: I want to show you something, Mrs. Gump. Now, this is
. Forrest is right here. The state a
I.Q. of eighty to attend public school, Mrs. Gump. Hes gonna have to go to . Now, hell be just fine.
Mrs. Gump: What does normal mean, ? He might be a bit , but my boy Forrest is going to get the same opportunities as everyone else. He's not going to some special school to learn to how to re-tread . Were talking about five little points here. There must be something can be done.
Principal: Were a progressive school system. We dont want to see anybody .
Principal: Is there a Mr. Gump, Mrs. Gump?
Mrs. Gump: Hes .
Vocabulary:
route n. 常規路線;航線;渠道,途徑
minimum adj. & n. 最低限度;最小量
gonna: going to (AE) 將要,用在口語中
opportunity n. 機會,時機
progressive adj. 排名次的;進步的
(2)根據對白捕捉詞匯
在材料1的語段中,讓學生連續欣賞兩遍后,把語段補充完整。即時的捕捉對白有利于加深學生對這些英語詞匯的記憶。
(3)通過修辭理解語言
在本段視頻中,有一些具有深層意義的句子,可以請學生結合內容來理解以下劃線部分的內容,加深對短語和句子的理解,為運用奠定基礎。
①Principal: Hes going to have to go to a special school. (a school for the low-IQ children)
②Mrs. Gump: He might be a bit on the slow side. (He might not be quick-witted.)
讓學生感受到這些句子都運用了一種語言現象——委婉語,接著介紹委婉語的定義和分類,擴大詞匯。
Definition: A euphemism is a kind of expressing method which aims at making people feel less embarrassed by using some agreeable words instead of those which may make people feel unpleasant and not respected. Euphemisms can mainly be grouped into three categories:For taboo(避諱);For cover(掩飾);For politeness (禮貌)。
2. 英文影視欣賞中詞匯的內化
一個單詞要在不同的語境下出現5~16次,學習者才有可能記住。為了提高學生在影視教學中的詞匯學習效果,教師可根據影視材料構建問題情境,并且設計多種形式的活動,反復出現課標詞匯,加深學生的印象。
(1)詞匯的復現
復述影片內容、根據關鍵詞匯、詞組和有用的表達方式,讓學生來復述影片內容;角色扮演、多次觀看同一片段后進行對白模仿、角色扮演,既可以提高學生的理解能力,也能鍛煉口語表達能力;佳句欣賞背誦、選取美文佳句,讓學生欣賞理解、背誦,做到脫口而出。
(2)詞匯的創造性使用
①一詞多義
在這一語段中主要關注的是委婉語,這既是一種語言現象,更是一種文化現象。學生在學了這一修辭后,能更了解西方的文化現象,也能擴大同一意義表達的詞匯量。
翻譯: I used to think I was poor, then they told me I wasnt poor; I was needy. Then they said it was self-defeating to think of myself as needy, that I was culturally deprived. Then they told me deprived was a bad image, that I was underprivileged. Then they told me that underprivileged was overused, that I was disadvantaged. I still dont have a dime-but I have a great vocabulary!
②遷移使用
根據以上對委婉語的講解,讓學生用英語來解釋以下劃線部分內容。
You are putting on weight.(becoming fat)
Now she is eating for two. (pregnant)
The old man lay taking his rest after a life of bitter hardship.(dead)
The young lady has married that bookseller who has one foot in the grave.
(is very old/ is dying/ at the point of death)
③情景活用
把委婉語放到語境中,根據它的定義和用法,教師給出一定場景,讓學生來運用。
In the middle of the dinner, you have drunk too much water and want to go to the toilet.
總之,詞匯附帶習得是通過聽、說、讀、寫等活動,有意識地引導學生注意詞頻較高或大綱內提出具體學習要求的詞匯,從而達到增大詞匯量的效果。而英文影視教學能夠創建真實的語言學習環境,對促進學生詞匯學習興趣和學習效果有著積極的作用。
