In the southernmost part of Germany, nestled among the Alps, is Bavaria. Munich is the cosmopolitan capital of the state, home to the world-famous 1)Oktoberfest and filled with art and history. Just an hour’s train ride through the rural countryside brings you to one of the most picturesque villages in Bavaria, Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
The area is renowned for its colorful 5)murals, which adorn the buildings, as well as the sense of tradition found here. The village of Garmisch became world-famous in 1936 when it hosted the winter Olympics. Today it continues to attract visitors from around the globe.
The town is really two villages that have grown together over time. From the heart of Partenkirchen you can wake up to a commanding view of the nearby ski areas.
Hop on a train and you’ll reach the famous Zugspitze in a matter of minutes. Here you can jump on the steepest aerial tram in the Alps. From a base elevation of 1,000 meters you’ll ascend way above tree line, crossing a glacier on your way to the summit. At nearly 3,000 meters, the vistas from above are amazing.

The area’s accessed by two cable cars, and ten additional lifts, which give skiers a quick 6)shuttle to the smooth, 7)groomed peaks.
The Zugspitze is famous for its steep 8)shutes and wide-open 9)bowls. Here on the glacier you can ski or snowboard from November through May.
Mountain-side restaurants offer a chance to sample Bavarian cuisine, sunbathe or just soak up the views. A relaxing day up here brings out the youthful 10)exuberance in all of us. Even for non-skiers, the 11)panorama to seven countries is well worth the trip.
