The Enlightenment of Oral English Skill Competition to Talents Cultivation and Faculty Construction at Vocational Colleges in Hunan

Oral English skill competition in Hunan is made up of two groups, the English major group and non-English major group. It is a branch of vocational students skill competition in Hunan, it can be seen as a window to present English teaching results, especially oral English teaching, at vocational colleges, it also provides necessary instruction to English teaching at vocational colleges. This paper tries to discuss the enlightenment of oral English skill competition to English teaching reform at vocational colleges from the aspect of talents cultivation and faculty construction.

一、Foreword

In recent years, vocational students skill competition held by education department in Hunan has been becoming a platform to show teaching quality and students elegant demeanor. All the vocational colleges also want to manifest their strength and compete with each other. The English skill competition of English majors and non-English majors has become an important standard to measure the teaching results at vocational colleges. The combination of competition and teaching promotes English teaching reform at vocational colleges to a new step.

二、To change the talents cultivation mode

Oral English skill competition tests not only students’English knowledge but also students’ strain capacity. Strain capacity is one of the most important ones when students step into workplaces, vocational colleges need to know that only those who have English knowledge cannot meet the demand of the society. Therefore, vocational college should change traditional single way of talents cultivation. Vocational colleges can start from the following four aspects: fi rst, pay attention to the consolidation of students’ basic language knowledge and focus on cultivating students’ ability of listening and speaking at the same time; second, focus on the combination of English knowledge and professional knowledge, so as to make students more suitable for vocational needs; third, pay attention to the cultivation of students’ vocational ability, such as, professional etiquette, critical thinking ability, interpersonal communication ability and professional quality; fourth, focus on students’innovative ability. Vocational college should have the look of long-term development and keep pace with the times.

三、To strengthen the construction of faculty

There is great relevance among teachers’ comprehensive quality, teaching quality and teaching efficiency. Students’poor performance in oral English skill competition ref l ects that teachers’ comprehensive quality needs to be further improved. So, it is feasible to commence teaching reform in vocational colleges with the construction of faculty. The training and cultivation of faculty can be started at the following two aspects: First, to develop professiability level onal ability, teachers’ quality can be promoted from the point of teaching concept and teaching methods. Second, to strengthen the construction of faculty, vocational colleges should foster“double masters” and encourage teachers for further study to realize the improvement of professional mastery, which will be a guarantee for the quality of English teaching at vocational college.

四、Conclusion

The establishment and implementing of vocational students oral English competition promote the teaching and output of English talents adhere to the direction of “aiming at meeting the need of the society, orienting to employ, purporting to practice”, strengthen the important role of oral English skill in vocational talents cultivation. The competition, teaching and reforming promotes mutually, which promotes the integration of English teaching of the teachers and professional training of the students at vocational colleges and is of guiding signif i cance at leading and enlightening English teaching reform at vocational colleges.
