A Study on the Cultivation of the Top Innovative Scientific Talents of Colleges and Their Values〔*〕

It is values that determine one’s future direction of development.The young top innovative scientific talents are outstanding ones both in the scientific field and the youth,whose values not only determine their own future directions of development,but also the development and future of the whole country.In order to cultivate their values,it is quite necessary to strengthen the thought guidance,develop the core socialist values,and adhere to morality education,down-to-earth practice,and the pursuit of truth.Moreover,the individual development of the talents needs to be emphasized and their creativity needs to be stimulated.The synergistic functions of the organizations and departments should be given full play to in order to utilize the culture education strategy.

Ⅰ.Characteristics of the values of the young top innovative scientific talents

1.Specific and firm ideals and beliefs

The young top innovative scientific talents with great learning capabilities and high level of science and technology have huge qualitative differences with the ordinary young people in their philosophy.Their values,learning objectives,learning attitudes,and interpersonal communication are also quite different from those of ordinary ones.With specific ideals,beliefs,and urges to achieve success,they persevere in exploration and scientific methods,make specific life plans,overcome mountains of difficulties,and make every effort to achieve their dreams.

2.Pursuit of independent values

The pursuit of independence and self-reliance ability is a significant symbol of innovative talents.Young top innovative scientific talents have high level of independence and self-reliance ability,dare to find,analyze,and solve problems independently,make value judgments and choices according to their own abilities,and have the courage to be the owners of their own life.

3.Strong will

Strong will is also a crucial symbol of the young top innovative scientific talents.In spite of all kinds of difficulties,challenges,or even mental tortures,they are able to use scientific attitudes and methods to recognize and judge the nature of things,set up practical objectives by themselves,and forge ahead with their scientific work.Moreover,in case of any changes in environment,they could improvise in accordance with the situation and make new and practical value judgments to realize their objectives more effectively.Good at summarizing experience,they are able to rationally deal with the process and results of their actions and make timely introspection.In most cases,they are immune to irrelevant lures and have super control over their emotion and life.

Ⅱ.Values that young top innovative scientific talents should possess

1.Stick to ideals and beliefs

“Ideals and beliefs are one’s spiritual support.With correct ideals and beliefs,life would have directions to go and the process of forging ahead would have strong motivation.”The young top innovative scientific talents consider the common objectives of the society as their ultimate guideline of their pursuit and choice of values,hold on to their beliefs of loving the country,the Party,and socialism,and adhere to the common ideal of building socialism with Chinese characteristics and achieving Chinese Dream.In addition,they combine their road of self-accomplishment with the future of the country,equip themselves with Marxism and the theory of socialism with Chinese characteristics,and “take the road of socialism with Chinese characteristics,continue to boost the confidence in our road,theory,and system,firmly follow the Party,and strive to achieve the Chinese Dream.”〔1〕

2.Sharpening excellent skills

Skills refer to abilities which are necessary to successfully finish a certain task,exerting direct effects on the efficiency of task.As the saying goes,“A workman must sharpen his tools if he is to do his work well.” The top talents should “consider learning as their top priority,responsibility,spiritual pursuit,and lifestyle,set up the belief of realizing their dreams with learning and achieving career success with skills,propel the ship of youth with diligent learning,and refuel the fights against hardship with the sharpened skills.”〔2〕The objectives of learning are to increase wisdom,nourish mind,and promote morality.The key of learning is to learn from practice,society,and the common people.To sum up,it is quite necessary for the top talents to put their knowledge into bold practice,dare to question the authorities and come up with new opinions,and spare no efforts to sharpen their skills.

3.Dare to make innovation

Innovation is the soul of the development of a nation and also the inexhaustible driving force of a country’s prosperity.The youth,especially the top innovative scientific talents,play a vital role in the process of building an innovative China and implementing the innovation-driven development strategy.The spirit of the times needs to be carried forward.“We should have the pioneering spirit,dare to emancipate the mind,advance with the times,seek the truth,forge ahead,inherit the predecessors,and have the ambition to surpass them.” “We should form the pragmatic attitude of seeking the truth and accumulate experience in the innovative work.”〔3〕Innovation derives from practice and ends in practice.Therefore,the top talents should realize their values and propel the development of the country with the innovative courage and capability.

4.Commitment to arduous struggle

“Road is made through walking,career is advanced through fighting,and success is achieved through arduous struggle.”〔4〕Arduous struggle is the traditional virtue of the Chinese nation,the soul of business and success.“Our country and nation have developed from poverty to today’s prosperity through the tenacious fight of generation after generation.”〔5〕“Make the young people realize that during the process of achieving the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation,there are important opportunities of development and unprecedented challenges.”〔6〕“Worries and hard work develop a country to be prosperous while idleness and hesitation ruin a country.” The top innovative scientific talents should learn to win without pride,lose with grace,be fearless of hardship or setbacks,adhere to tenacious,arduous,and unremitting struggle,and dare to break down the ideological barriers to create the miracles.

5.Temper lofty character.

“A nation’s civilization accomplishment is largely shown through the morality and spirit of the young generation.”〔7〕Therefore,the top innovative scientific talents should strengthen ideological and moral cultivation,set up and implement the socialist core values,and lead the public to be well-behaved.“They should consciously abide by social basic morality and ethics,promote the traditional virtues of the Chinese nation,actively advocate the social morality,professional morality and family virtues,and become virtuous and honest people with certain bottom lines.”〔8〕Moreover,it is necessary for them to assume social responsibility,spread the Chinese traditional virtues and the Chinese spirit,and promote social progress with practical actions.

Ⅲ.Measures to cultivate the values of the top innovative scientific talents

1.Strengthen the ideological guidance and cultivate the socialist core values

The youth time is the key maturing phase of one’s view of the world,life,and values.Xi Jinping stresses,“The value orientation of the youth determines the future value orientation of the whole society.The youth should obey and promote the socialist core values.”〔9〕Therefore,the top innovative scientific talents should be armed with the socialist system with Chinese characteristics.Moreover,their theoretical,political,and emotional identification with the socialism theory with Chinese characteristics shall be strengthened.More importantly,they should firmly believe in Marxism,cultivate patriotism,promote Chinese spirit,and accumulate Chinese power.It is also necessary to properly deal with the relationship between individual ideals with social ideals,individual needs with social needs,and individual interests with social interests.The socialism common ideal with Chinese characteristics could be used to accumulate the strength to build socialism.Lastly,the top talents should be motivated to improve individual accomplishment and awareness and use the socialist core values to provide firm and solid spiritual support for the socialist modernization construction.

2.Stick to the cultivation of morality

The report of the 18th Party Congress points out,“The fundamental task of education is the cultivation of morality and socialist builders and successors with comprehensive development of morality,wisdom,sports,and arts.”〔10〕Xi Jinping stresses,“Morality has fundamental significance to the individuals and society.Therefore,the first thing is to cultivate one’s morality.”“The cultivation of morality should aim high and begin with practical actions.The aspiration to serve the country and people is lofty,with which one could achieve huge accomplishment.In the meanwhile,we should begin with practical deeds.‘Learn from the good and make timely correction of our mistakes.’Learn to work and be thrifty,grateful,warm-hearted,and humble.Learn tolerance,self-reflection and self-discipline.”〔11〕The cultivation of morality is the very foundation of education.A country without morality could not be prosperous and a person without morality could not achieve success.Therefore,the top talents should remember their identity and historical mission,bear the social responsibility,adhere to improve their morality,and set up the life goal of selfless dedication to the country and people.To be more exact,they should seek the truth,promote Chinese spirit,and achieve Chinese Dream for the interests of the country and people.Therefore,all departments and branches of the government,colleges and society should strengthen the moral cultivation of the top talents,focus on moral practice,adhere to moral tradition,and promote the academic charms.

3.Adhere to pragmatic exploration of the truth

Xi Jinping stresses,“We need to form the pragmatic attitude to seek the truth and continue to accumulate experience in our innovative work.”〔12〕“With perseverance,success is sure to come.The youth has great opportunities.The key of success is to lay a solid foundation and work hard.”〔13〕The young top innovative scientific talents should establish lofty life goals and positive,optimistic,scientific,and rational attitude,seize every opportunity,forge ahead,seek the truth,and dare to make innovation.

4.Focus on individualized development and cultivate innovative quality

Focus on individualized development is to respect the individuality and subjectivity of people and aim to explore the potentials.A person is the combination of rationality,creativity,and ability of development,whose activities are restricted by the subject consciousness and the outside conditions.Education is to use activities with certain objectives to cultivate the creativity,stimulate the curiosity,and explore the potentials of people.Everyone has the requirements to develop their own individuality.Successful education is to help the students to find their own individuality and develop it to cater for the social requirements.Without individuality,there will be no creativity.“Creativity means the surpassing of the outside things and also the creators themselves,who transform themselves together with the object world and make themselves become better and new ones.”〔14〕In a word,the goal of education is to respect the individuality and cultivate the independent and innovative personality of the youth.

5.Give play to the synergetic function and form the culture education strategy

“Culture is the sum of the abilities and accomplishment accumulated during the process of people’s changing the objective and subjective world.From individual perspective,culture shapes the individuality and realizes socialization.From the group perspective,culture integrates the objectives,specifications,opinions,and actions.From the social perspective,culture integrates and advances the society.”〔15〕Culture is air,invisible and intangible,scattered in each corner of the world.Culture affects the country,society,and everyone at any time.“Advanced and healthy culture could greatly promote the development of the society,influence people’s methods and behaviors of interaction,practical activities,cognitive activities,and ways of thinking.Excellent culture could enrich the spiritual world,strengthen the spiritual power,and promote the all-round development of people.”〔16〕“Culture education is an integrated and gradual process,which needs the cooperation and mutual participation of people’s emotion,cognition,and will.The goal of culture education is to form the unity of people’s personality and improve people’s morality.Moreover,the goal is to help people form rational understandings,emotional approvals,and the willingness to implement the ideas and morals.”〔17〕Culture education is a systematic project in need of the joint efforts of schools and the whole society to form the educational atmosphere.Culture education is also a kind of education thought,which needs to be insisted for a long time to achieve effects.The cultivation of the young top innovative scientific talents is not the responsibility of a certain department or industry.The synergetic function of the country,governments at all levels,universities,enterprises,families and society shall be given full play to in order to form educational culture.

The excellent young top innovative scientific talents are the pioneers of the times,the future of the nation,and the backbone of the society.Excellent refers to that they should have persistent beliefs,lofty morality,abundant knowledge and excellent skills.The youth time is the key period of cultivating the values of the top talents.Therefore,we should insist morality and people-oriented education,gear education to the needs of modernization,the world and the future.Besides,we should use scientific and pragmatic education methods and avoid artificial shaping of people.The young top innovative scientific talents should be cultivated to become pioneers and dedicators ahead of the times instead of egoists and hypocritical elites.To sum up,the top talents should have strong humanistic feelings,great wisdom,horizon,pursuit,and ideal,who advocate socialist cause,implement the socialist core values,and achieve the great rejuvenation of the nation and the Chinese Dream.
