作為一個已經十三四次造訪中國的西方學者，無論是人文視野，還是學術方面，我的每次經歷都是令人炫目的，充滿驚奇又富有啟示性。

For a Westerner like me, who is now visiting China for the 13th or 14 th time, every visit is a dazzling, astonishing and instructive experience, both on the scientific and the human sights.

我1987年第一次來到中國，令我今日頗為感慨的是當年邀請我來華的中國頂尖科學家，正是今天和我一同擔任本屆世界癌癥大會榮譽主席的曾毅教授。

My first visit in China was in 1987. I am really quite moved today to remind that the Chinese leading scientist who invited me here for this first visit was Professor Zeng Yi, who is today the Honorary Chairman of this WCC 2015 Conference together with me.

In 1987, Prof. Zeng Yi and I were both interested in naso-pharyngeal carcinomas (NPC), endemic in Southern China, and associated with the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). 1987年以來，我到訪過很多中國的研究所并親眼見證眾多獨特非凡的研究成果，每一個都可謂學術領域的重大突破。

1987年的中國，大多數實驗室只有一個離心分離機和一個顯微鏡。現如今，生命科學的最新科技，如DNA高通量測序，已經逐漸普及到每個研究機構。高精尖的科研人員與醫生層出不窮。在癌癥患者的日常護理方面的進步也屬全球領先。

Since 1987, I have visited many Institutes in China and could see with my own eyes the extraordinary and unique progresses, which are actually scientifical giant steps.

In 1987, very few labs were equipped with more than one centrifuge and one microscope. Now, almost everywhere, the most recent technologies in life sciences, like next generation DNA sequencing (NGS) are available and growing everyday. The number of well educated and highly competent scientists and physicians is unbelievable to us, and the quality of care daily provided to cancer patients have improved as nowhere else in the world.

我不確信西方的大多數從未到訪中國的學者能夠充分意識和領悟到這些變化的重要現實意義。

這個時代，當新技術、新靶向藥物、新疾病分類都可以迅速影響全球癌癥治療，并在概念、思維方式及現代腫瘤學臨床工具上取得實質性的革命，我非常相信，中國將在這場影響深遠的變革中扮演關鍵的、革新性的角色。與中國團隊或機構的合作，將不再被認為是“如何幫助發展中國家”或者“來訓練西方最優秀人才”，而是如何與這位新晉醫學和科學巨人構建富有成效的對話橋梁，并且不久，這種合作將轉變為科學研究上的必要需求。（摘編自Thomas Tursz博士5月15日在世界癌癥大會開幕式上的演講）

I am not sure that most Western scientists, who have never visited China, are fully aware and realizing the practical importance of these major changes.

At a time when new technologies, new targeted agents, and new disease classifications will soon dramatically impact global cancer care, and will achieve a true Revolution in the concepts, the way of thinking and the practical tools of modern Oncology, I am firmly convinced that China will play a crucial and innovative role in these seminal changes. Collaborating with Chinese groups or Institutes will no longer be regarded as ‘how to help a developing country’ or ‘to train the best people in the West’, but how to establish fruitful links and dialogues with this new medical and scientific giant, and will soon appear as a mandatory scientific necessity.
