Nothing is fair or good alone

Each and all attracts me not only because of the beautiful scenes Emerson describes but also the philosophical ideas. In this poem，Emerson gives us a new aesthetic idea that the beauty of nature is not about individual things，but the close relationship among individual things. The true beauty lies in the fact that man and nature get along with each other peacefully and harmoniously.

In this poem，three prominent points that worthy of commenting on. First of all，the structure of the poem is very orderly. The first part is a summary of the whole poem in which the poet portrays a pretty happy，peaceful and cozy picture，and tells us the poem's main idea： All are needed by each one； Nothing is fair or good alone. That is，each is part of all，and all is in each. The second part elaborates the main idea by several examples，and demonstrates it with details aims at telling us that the beauty of nature lies in the connection between every thing. Anything，such as songs of birds，delicate shells，once they have left their original environment，will not be beautiful anymore. The third part is also a summary in which the poet expresses his transcendental idea that all living things are in a harmonious family. People should get close to nature for instruction，and blend in with nature. The structure itself is very logical and harmonious，and embodies Emerson's concept of harmony.

The second striking point is the rhyme scheme. The rhyme scheme of the first part is aabbccdd，i.e，its couplets in pairs are to emphasize the wholeness. The first part is a summary，and the aabbcc sound can give us a sense of the wholeness，and every individual in the all cooperates with each other well. In addition，this rhyme scheme makes those irrelevant images link together. The rhyme scheme in the second part is more flexible. It changes from abab... to aabb... the change shows the significance of individuals，for individuals are different，and they have their own features. The rhyme scheme in the third part is also flexible，but the last four lines return to aabb. It is to correspond with the conclusion of the poem. In brief，the rhyme scheme is significant because it reflects the harmonious feelings that the poem intends to express，and accords with the beautiful and melodious atmosphere.

Last but not least is the imagery in the poem. In the second part，the poet starts from details describing the song of sparrows，the delicate shells and the graceful maids. Why does the poet use these three images? Why not just use flowers，butterflies and something like this，because these images are more beautiful and comparative. To my thinking，sparrows，shells and maids are from the sky，the sea and the land. They represent the creatures of the three parts. With those images，the poet intends to tell us that whatever individuals come from，they can not escape from the fate that once they leave their original environment and are irrelevant to the wholeness，they are not beautiful any more. Besides，in the poem，there are lots of beautiful images，such as the red-cloaked clown，delicate shells，graceful maids，the song of sparrows and the violet breath. All of those images give us a sense of beauty，and appeal to our sense organs. However，there are also many ugly images in the poem，such as Napoleon's files sweep round yon Alpine height，the weeds and foam in the savage sea and the club-moss burrs around the ground-pine. Emerson is wise enough to know that the true natural beauty lies in the balance of beauty and ugliness. They complete and perfect each other，and that is the essence of the nature.
