Dear editor,
We have been using Advance with English in the past two and a half years, and recently we have carried out a survey in our class about what we students think of it.
According to the survey, many students are satisfied with several merits. First, it has beautiful pictures to go with the texts, which will greatly interest the students. Besides, the texts are mostly taken from the latest foreign reading materials and the English is quite standard. Above all, every module is closely related to society, from which we can learn a lot.
At the same time, the students also point out some shortcomings. One is that there are too many new words for students to remember them well. What’s more, students often find it easy to forget what’s been learned as the book lacks repetition in its content. Worse still, it is difficult to practise Task or Project in many schools, especially those rural ones.
In my opinion, next time you can choose many interesting reading materials with fewer new words to make sure students can learn better and if possible you can invite some students to participate in the revising work.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

Nowadays a lot of schools keep their students in school all day long. Students have different opinions about it.
Some of the students think they enjoy less freedom and have little chance to get in touch with society. They are not able to fully develop their interests and hobbies,. Therefore, they have less interest in their studies.
Some others think school is the best place to get knowledge so they should put their heart into their lessons. Some students lack the ability to control themselves. Once out of school, they may lose control of themselves and do something that will influence/affect their studies.
Personally, it is necessary to keep students at school. But at the same time schools should organize various activities so that students can enjoy their school life. (I don’t agree to keep students at school all day. Schools should offer students more free time to develop their personal interests.

As we all know, many countries are doing research into Confucian thought. Recently we have had a discussion about whether we still need study Confucian thought in modern society and establish as many Confucian Institutes as possible in the world.
About 60% of the students in my class think it necessary to do so. They think there are 294 such Institutes in the world, which shows people throughout the world are focusing on his thought. And it can be a platform for foreigners to learn Chinese and know more about the Chinese culture. Besides, it can promote the co-operation in education and scientific research between China and other countries.
However, 40% are against it. They believe Confucian thought was created thousands of years ago and is out of date already. And even in a way it limits the development of the world. On the other hand, foreigners can learn Chinese in some other ways, so there is no need to do so specially.
Personally, I’m for it. Through Confucian Institutes not only does the world know China, but also China has a better understanding of the world. In addition, it is alsoa bridge of friendship between China and other countries.

Dear Editor,
Recently, a discussion has been held in our school on whether it is reasonable for universities to admit students through interviews. The results are as follows:
60% of the students support this action. They express that interviews can evaluate a student in a more thorough and comprehensive way. It can encourage students to develop their own interests and personalities. What’s more, with the development of society, a more open and efficient way to test a student’s abilities is needed.
On the other hand, the other 40% students are against this idea. They hold the view that interviews may be subjective and one-sided, which could lead to unfairness. Another view they support is that not all students are good at showing their talents in interviews. In addition, they think that a student can’t be judged in only three or five minutes.
In my opinion, in some way, it is a good way to admit students with talents through interviews. For the average students, perhaps it is a wise choice to make good preparations for the College Entrance Examinations. After all, it is the main way to go to college.
