Dai Naidie’s Great Achievements of her Whole Life

Abstract：Gladys devoted almost half a century to translate works of more than 100 kinds ranging from the pre Qin literature to the modern works， which was seldom seen in the world translation history， promoting her to become a rarely famous bilingual translator. Her translation works are abundant in styles and forms， expounding Chinas literature from different angles so that more oversea readers can understand Chinese literature， and then understand the Chinese culture.

In 1919， Dai Naidie （her Chinese name， and her former name is Gladys B Tayler and was changed into Gladys Yang after her marriage） was born in Beijing， whose father， Dai Leren， served as Director of the Department of economics in the Yenching University and Custodian of Boxer Indemnity Management Committee as well. When she was in England， Gladys spent ten years studying in a missionary school as a boarder and then was successfully admitted to the University of Oxford. At that time， Professor Shovens of this university recommended her to join the Chinese Association. She changed her major form French into Chinese and became the first doctor of literature in University of Oxford. Gladys made a great contribution to Chinas Translation which lies not only in the translation of western classic masterpiece， like Odyssey ， Chanson de Roland ， Haunted House， Journey to the Center， etc.， but in the translation of Chinese literary classics， which has a huge role in promoting the exchange of Chinese and western literature.

1. The important stage of Gladyss translation activities

Gladyss translation activities began when she was in University of Oxford. She and her husband Yang Xianyi translated Lisao. As a famous sinologist named Hawkss comment， the difference between the Yangs translation and the original works of Lisao is just like the difference between Easter eggs and omelets. Meanwhile， the couple also translated many masterpieces， namely Jiuge， the True Story of Ah Q， etc. In 1840s， Gladys and her husband devoted to education and also translated some works in their spare time. She concentrated on the translating Lu Xuns works and joined in the National Institute for Complication and Translation and took the responsibility for translating Chinese historical works into English. Because of the westerners poor understanding of Chinese literature， Gladys was the first to translate History as a Mirror （Zi Zhi Tong Jian）. She also made use of her past time to finish translating the Travel of Laocan， most of which are poems of Tao Yuanming and some verses of Wen Tingjun are also included. After the establishment of new China， Gladys was invited to join the foreign languages press and also hired to hold the post of complicating and translating Chinese works into English versions. Besides translating activities， she also got involved in complicating works. She could read vernacular Chinese， which made a solid base for her modern literature translation， likely Qu Yuan， White Haired Girl， San Li Wan， A Brief History Chinese Novels， etc. The later generations think highly of her translation works for her brilliant ability of translating many Chinese modern and contemporary literary works independently， so she deserves a model of translators.

2. The main achievements of Gladyss translation activities

Her translation of Shen Congwens Border Town and Romance of the Western Chamber （Xi Xiang San Ji） has an important literary value in the modern literary translation. Romance of the Western Chambe included Dais more than 10 works， mainly selected out from “Xiangxi” and Autobiography of Congwen. Her translation works classified as liberated area literature is mainly from Zhao Shulis The change of the Lee village， Ouyang Shans The Three Families Alley. In Gladyss 17 years translation career， her translation of Keep Red Flag Flaying by Liang Bin is seen as her representative works， which had a profound influence in the society of that time. Its also called a magnificent epic of the peasants revolution. In the new period of literary works， Gladyss main translation works were Heavy Wings， Lotus Town， etc. In 1955， Gladys even translated Li Guangtians folk narrative poem Ashima， which is a kind of oral sung songs， mainly about local customs， practices and human characteristics of Sani people. The narrative poem is called as the “national song” by Sani people. It has the eternal artistic charm and the translation version of it made the world realize its extraordinary national literature. In 1980s， With Chinas overseas fork art performances increasing and in order to let more foreign readers understand the crosstalk， Gladys translated Traditional Comic Tales. In the translation of fairy tales， Dai translated the works of one childrens literature writer named Zhang Tianyi， Da Lin and Xiao Lin. This story criticizes the dark of the old society and the sings high praise for the working peoples struggling spirit.
