Market-based Reform of the Teaching of Business English Correspondence, by SHANG Yan JIN Xin, p.38

Business English correspondence course is one of the core courses in Business English and International Trade. Recently, with the intensification of social competition and the severe employment situation, requirements brought by employers on students’ practical ability of correspondence are increasing. This paper takes an investigation on 45 foreign trade enterprises and 70 students who have already graduated or who are trainees. Through this investigation, we find that there is an asymmetry issue of supply and demand between the teaching of Business English correspondence and market demand. This paper studies the methods of reforming the teaching of Business English correspondence from the angle of social market demand.

An Investigation on Causes and Suggestions of English Learning Burnout of Students at Application-oriented Colleges, by LUO Huqin, p.49

From the perspective of qualitative research, the present study investigates the causes of English learning burnout of students at application-oriented colleges by interview. It is found out that the learning burnout was mainly caused by several pairs of contractions. They are the contractions between students’ learning situation and the requirements of college English course, between the requirements raised by students and the curriculum design, between students’ demand of more class activities and the limited teaching resources, between the language used in class and the native language environment, between English learning atmosphere and diversified value orientation of college students, and between the entertaining nature of English learning and students’ assessing methods. The author puts forward some suggestions to decrease students’ learning burnout to some extent, such as teaching students in accordance with their aptitude and foundations, improving students’ interest and enthusiasm in learning, urging students to learn with a rich variety of teaching methods, and encouraging students to participate in the rich and interesting classroom activities to realize their English learning satisfaction and achievement; University should pay more attention to the college English teaching and organize more activities to help create a good atmosphere of learning English and establish a more reasonable examination system.

A Review of Studies of L2 Written Corrective Feedback in China, by FAN Yongmei, p.58

Written corrective feedback (WCF) has always been the focus of L2 writing studies abroad. In recent years, an increasing number of researchers at home have paid much attention to this issue. In spite of the controversy on how to make written corrective feedback and which kind of WCF is more effective, the existing studies of written corrective feedback have demonstrated that WCF research is of great significance to guiding classroom teaching and improving students’ writing ability. The current article reviews the studies of WCF in China in the following aspects, namely, the effectiveness of WCF, the efficacy of different types of WCF, the factors affecting the effectiveness of WCF and learners’ attitudes’ towards WCF, and points out the limitations of these studies. Finally,suggestions are offered for future WCF research.

An Empirical Study of English Learning Motivational Regulation Strategies, by YU Wei, p.62

The present study investigated, by the quantitative analysis, Chinese university students’ use of English learning motivational regulation strategies. Eight types of motivational regulation strategies were identified through an exploratory factor analysis, that is, interest enhancement, performance self-talk, mastery self-talk, self-reward, negative-based incentive, task value enhancement, volitional control, and self-efficacy enhancement. The result of descriptive statistics showed that generally speaking, Chinese university students used all the eight strategies with medium frequency.

Think-aloud Studies in ESL Reading in a Vocational College, by LIU Niuwei, p.94

The first part of the research identified proficient readers’ processing Strategies with thinking aloud. The second part of the study investigated whether teaching reading strategies of thinking aloud resulted in acquisition of the target strategies and improving comprehension. The results revealed that there is an increase in mean score of treatment group, and as an instructional approach, think aloud showed the potential to be a useful technique for helping Chinese English learners learn and apply processing strategies to their reading.

In recent years, stance expressions have drawn much attention from researchers at home and abroad. Based on the previous studies, the paper explores the stance adverbs in English research articles. Adopting the framework of Biber et al. (1999) for analyzing stance, the study divides the stance adverbs into epistemic, attitude and style adverbs and analyzes the characteristics and functions of stance adverbs by specific instances. The study will make theoretical and practical contributions to the English research article writing and teaching.

Creative Treason in the Translation of Children’s Literature, by CAI Yan, p.158

Since children are the target readers of children’s literature, translators should take the language features of children’s literature as well as children’s taste into consideration. Therefore, the translator’s creative treason is inevitable in children’s literature translation. This paper makes an analysis of the Chinese version of The lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe to discuss the use of creative treason in the translation of children’s literature. It proves that in order to convey the content and the artistic conception of the source text, the translator is required to be creative in translation of children’s literature.
