A Chronicle of DESIS-China

DESIS network is an emerging and explorative initial in terms of topics and organization,promoted and founded by Prof. EzioManzini and his team.A defined basic of framework f this network is “DESIS-international and DESIS-Locals”. As matter of fact, every DESIS-local has its different local context and system of network. They have a common vision but work in different ways. DESIS-China is a typical DESIS-Local and was co-founded by six leading design schools in China in collaboration to Politecnicodi Milano(Polimi).The founding members of DESIS-China includes:Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University,Beijing School of Design, Hunan University, Changsha School of Design, Jiangnan University, Wuxi College of Design and Innovation, Tongji University, Shanghai College of Design, Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, Guangzhou School of Design, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong

DESIS-China actively organizesmeetings,seminars, forums and exhibitions in order to promote related exchange and collaboration and is often involved into some important events.On one hand, DESIS-China consolidates the strategic partnership between founding members;it produces effective academic and social impacts on another.This articleaims to show a roadmap of DESIS initial in China: the background, how it was incubated, prepared, founded and promoted,and what happened and what is going on. (figure 1)

During the foundation of DESIS-International and DESIS-China, I was doing my PhD study with Prof. EzioManzini in Polimi while I also have my original position in School of Design, Jiangnan University. This double facets position enabled me to actively involve into those initials as a promoter.And that’s a condition that I have a try to generate this list, so called “a chronicle”. This chronicle starts the launching of CCSL project and ends with coming events in next months. Somehow the DESIS initial is spin-off of CCSL. After that,DESIS-brazil was established, followed by DESISChina and soon it’s emerging in all continents. In fact, the context of DESIS-China can be traced back to Sustainable Everyday Project (SEP 2001-03)leaded by EzioManzini and Francois Jegou. .The part of outcome was from“Strategic design and Design for sustainability in China” (2000-2001), programme of research promoted by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University where Prof. manzini was Chair Professor of Design under the Distinguished Scholars Schemeduring that time. Four universities in China were involved into it. Prof. Manzini and his team ever organized workshops in each university. They are Guangzhou Academy of Fine Art, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hunan University and Tsinghua University. Five years later, CCSL-China programmebecome a milestone triggeringanother wave in China.

>October, 2006, Milano: CCSL project launched

Creative Community for Sustainable Lifestyles(CCSL) is a project promoted by the Task Force on Sustainable Lifestyles, within the United Nations 10 Year Framework of Programmes on Sustainable Consumption and Production.

The CCSL Project is coordinated by DISIndaco,PolitecnicodiMilano in Italy and by Strategic Design Scenarios (SDS), in Belgium, withthe United Nations Environmental Programme(UNEP) as global partner and with some specific local partners in Brazil, India and China. Based on European research experiences, it aims to investigate the grassroots social innovations in emerging contexts including China, Brazil and India, and their design implications. The design school partner in China is Guangzhou Academy of Fine Art, supported by Prof. Tong Huiming and FengShu

October 16-17, 2006, Beijing:This is the firstever Social Innovation international conference organized by the British Council, Young Foundation and China Center for Comparative Politics and Economics (CCCPE). Prof.EzioManzini was invited as a speaker.October 18, 2006, Beijing: Prof.

Ezio Manzinivisited Tsinghua Universityand did a lecture “ Grassroots Social Innovation and Design”.

December 8-10, 2006, Shantou: Prof. EzioManzini was invited to have a speech on Shantou Dialogues that is sponsor by LI KA SHING Foundation.Januanry 14-20, 2007, Hong Kong: Prof.EzioManzinivisited The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and organized a workshop on grassroots social innovation and design with Benny Leong.

January 23-25, 2007, Guangzhou: Prof.

Ezio Manzinivisited Sun Yat-Sen University (SYSU)and Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts(GAFA)for preparation of CCSL-China programme.

April 17, 2007, Milano:Prof. Tong Huiming and Fengshu from GAFA visiting to Polimi and meeting with Prof. EzioManzini during SalonediMobili for CCSL-China programme.

May, 2007, Shanghai(-Milano): A Double Master Degree Programme on PSSD between PolitecnicodiMilano and Tongji University starts.It becomes a platform to promote DESIS related cooperation.

>May 28-June 6, 2007 Guangzhou: CCSL Seminar at SYSU, CCSL Exercise at GAFA The Expert Seminar, as a milestone of Chinese programme of CCSL project, is coorganized by the Institute of Civil Society,Sun Yat-sen University and DIS/Indaco,PolitecnicodiMilanoon May 28th 2007 at SYSU.26 participants from CSOs and cases participated seminar. They worked together to investigate creative communities initiatives and sustainable lifestyles in China (focused on Guangzhou area)based on a cluster of creative community cases.The Expert Seminar counted with the presence of Prof. EzioManzini and Fran?ois Jègou and Prof Zhu Jiangang and Director Alice Lau from ICS. After the Seminar, a Design Exercise was organized in School of Design, Guangzhou Academy of Fine Art (GAFA) aiming at the visualisation of creative communities cases.(Figure 2)

May 30-31, 2007, Wuxi: Prof. EzioManzini visitedJiangnan Universityand was invited to be a Guest Professor of Jiangnan University.

November, 2007,Hong Kong: Asian Lifestyle Design Research Lab of the School of Design at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Leaded by Prof. Benny Ding Leoung,started to carry out a 2 years research project “Lifestyle China”in collaboration with the 10 institutes from the mainland.

>December, 2007, Milano(-Beijing): LeNs Project Launching

LeNS: The Learning Network on Sustainability is Asian-European multi-polar network for curricula development on Design for Sustainability focused on product-service system innovation. LeNs is a 3 years project (15/12/2007 - 15/12/2010) funded by the Asia Link Programme, EuropAid, European Commission, involving 7 design schools in Europe and Asia. Academy of Fine Arts, TsingHua University is one of partners, coordinated by Prof.Cai Jun and Liu Xin.

>June, 2008, Palo Alto: Chongming Design research project launched

Prof. LOU Yongqivisit D-School of Stanford and had a workshop on Chongming sustainable design research project with professors for Stanford, Cal-Poly and Yale. The workshop was supported by China-US Center of Sustainable Development.

Prof.Lou also had a meeting with Bill Moggridge in the headquarter of IEDO. (figure 3)

July 10-12, 2008, Torino: “Changing the Change:Design Visions, Proposals and Tools” is an international conference on the role and potential of design research in the transition towards sustainability. It’s in the framework of World Design Capital Torino 2008. Prof. EzioManzini is the scientific coordinator of conference. Prof. Lou Yongqi from Tongji University was invited to be the International Advisory Committee Member and keynote speaker in perspective of China.>September-December, 2008,Wuxi: Chita 08 Project and foundation of “DESIS Research Center”

Chita08: Service Design for Chinese Social Innovation is a formal collaborative project between PolitecnicodiMilano and Jiangnan University. It’s pilot service design exercise for social innovation in China. As a spin-off of Chita08 project, A “DESIS Research Center” was co-founded by School of Design, JU and Indaco,Polimi to consolidate the collaboration between two universities and promote related the researchand practices in China.

Sponsed by Hunan University and invited by Tsinghua, Tongji and Jiangnan, Prof. EzioManzini had a long visiting trip in China. In Wuxi, he met with President of Jiangnan University, Prof.

Chen Jian to discuss on collaboration and did a lecture “Next Design”; In Changsha, he was invited as jury of Lotus Prize organized by Hunan University and have a speech in Lotus Prize Awarding Ceremony; In Beijing, Prof. Manzini and Dr Zhong Fang organized a DESIS Workshop at Tsinghua University; in Shanghai, he did lecture at Tongji University and visited Chongming island for Eco-community project by TekTao.

During the trip, Prof. EzioManzini had wide discussion with each partner on DESIS initials.Finally, in Shanghai, a draft proposal of DESISChina was generated with effort between Prof.EzioManzini, Prof Lou Yongqi and Miaosen Gong. (Figure 4)

>March 9, 2009, Guangzhou: DESIS-China Kick-off Meeting

Promoted and hosted by Prof. Tong Huimin,(Dean of School of design, GAFA), the Kick-offmeeting of DESIS-China was hold on successfully in Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts (GAFA).This meeting symbolized the launch of DESISChina network. 11 professors and researchers from founding members and Polimi gathered together for this newborn design research network. They are CHEN Jiang, JI Tie, FENG Shu, ZHANG Linghao, LEOUNG Benny Ding,ZHONG Fang, LOU Yongqi(Coordinotor of DESIS-China), YANG Wenqing, DONG Meihong,TONG Huiming, Jan Stael von HOLSTEIN,ZHANG Xian, LIU Xing. Prof. EzioManzini in Milan (Founder of DESIS-International) and Miaosen GONG in Boston (Co-coordinotor of DESIS-China) were involved into this meeting by Skype. In this meeting, the proposal of DESISChina was confirmed by the 6 founding members with agreements. The DESIS-China agenda of 2009-2010 was widely discussed and enriched by each member.(Figure 5)

May 2, 2009, The New York:DESIS-USA kickoff meeting was organized in Parsons The New School for Design. Miaosen Gong was invited to attend the meeting and presented DESIS-China.>March-October, 2009, DESIS09 Collaboration

DESIS 09: Social Innovation and Connection is collaboration between PolitecnicodiMilano(Polimi) and founding members of DESISChina, promoted and coordinated by DEISSChina under the umbrella of DESIS-International.It is a didactical and researching project for design-oriented phenomenon observation and exploration of design for Chinese social innovations. Finally, Jiangnan University, Tongji University, Hunan University, Guagnzhou

Academy of Fine arts and Hong Kong Polytechnic University participated this collaboration. The results of collaboration were presented and exhibited in DESIS forum and exhibition in October.

May 20-21, 2009, Milano: Prof. Pei Gang,President of Tongji University and Desis-China coordinator Prof. Lou Yongqi visitedPolitecnicodiMilano and met with Rector GiulioBallioof Polimi and Professor EzioManzini.

>May 26, 2009, Shanghai: DESIS forum and exhibition

A DESIS forum and exhibition were co-organized by Tongji University and DESIS-CHINA in Shanghai as a part of Inauguration Ceremony for College of Design and Innovation, Tongji University on May 26th 2009. DESIS Forum 2009 focuses research on Design for Social Innovation and Sustainability in China. There were seven speeches by speakers from seven universities in China and Europe including Prof. YrjoSotamaa,Prof. Tong Huimin, Prof. Lorraine Justice, Prof.Ji Tie from School of Design, Hunan University,Prof. Lou Yongqi, Zhang Xian and Miaosen Gong.The Forum and Exhibition are great occasions to exchange the research experiences between DESIS-International and DESIS-China.

July 7, 2009, Guangxi: “The New Channel” is a collaborative project between Nokia Research Center in Beijing and School of Design, Hunan University. It’s a Design and Social Innovation summer camp towards The Autonomous County of Tongdao Dong Nationality.

September 13-15, 2009, Milano:Jiangnan University delegation including vice president,Prof. Wang Wu, director of International Office,Prof. Liu Lixia, Dean of School of Design, Prof.GuoWeimin visitedPolitecnicodiMilano and met with Prof. EzioManzini.

>October 15-21, 2009, Shanghai:International DESIS forum and exhibition,DESIS-China members meeting As collaboration between Tongji university,DESIS-China and Shanghai International Creative Industries Week, An International DESIS forum“Connecting the world” and an exhibition “ Next Design” were organized to promote and exchange last outcome of research and projects in the field of design for social innovation and sustainability.

The forum was moderated by Prof. Lou Yongqi.Prof. EzioManzini was invited as the keynotespeaker. Other speakers include Prof. Zhang Linghao, Prof. Peter Bolsterli, Prof. Cai Jun, Prof.

Richard Ouwerkerk, Prof. Kurt Mehert, Prof. He Renke, Prof. ElsebthGerner Nielsen.In the evening of 19th, a formal DESIS-China meeting was organized between professors from six founding members and Prof. EzioManzini and Prof. Anna Meroni from PolitecnicodiMilano.The former are Prof. Lou yongqi, Prof. He Renke,Prof. Caijun, Prof. Gong Miaosen, Prof. Benny Leong, and Wu Ying.(Figure 6)(Figure 7)

Feb 25, 2010, New York: Prof. LOU Yongqi meet with Suzanne Dvells, Lara Penin, Eduardo Staszowsk from Parsons School of Design and Prof. Anna Meroni from Polimi in New York.They shared the progress on DESIS-Local in China, USA and Italy and discussed how to create more interaction and exchange within DESIS network.

April 30, 2010, Shanghai: Together with Prof.LouYongqi, Rector GiulioBalio of Polimi Visit Chongming Island. They discussed the possibilities on the future collaboration between Polimi and Tongji on this project.

>June 19-20, 2010, Shanghai: Great China Creative Industries Forum and DESIS-China members meeting

Chinese Creative Industries Forum aims to connect stakeholders of creative industries from Greater China, to enhance interdisciplinary communication, and to build knowledge resources for the development of creative industries in Greater China area. Twelve Professors from DESIS-China were invited to actively facilitate the small group discussions and ‘Distinguished Creative Industries Practitioners’ workshops as moderators. During these days, A DESIS-China members meeting was organized to discuss the coming activities in September.(Figure 8)Coming events:

August, 2010, Wuxi:published a special topic section of DESIS in 4th edition.

September 7-10, 2010, Shanghai: Cumulus Confererence and DESIS session and exhibition September 10, 2010, Shanghai: DESIS Forum and DESIS-International meeting in UN pavilion of Shanghai Expo.

September 12, 2010, Wuxi: DESIS Seminar:Design and Social Innovation for Local Development.

September 12-19, 2010, Beijing:Summer School in “Age-ing in Places”

DESIS-China was founded only one and half years ago, but the preparation, foundation and running until now seems a long story to us. For limitation of space and authors’ experiences, we have to select part of related initials and activities in this chronicle, there must be some interesting information missed. Nevertheless, to review the past is very helpful to move ahead in future to DESIS-China, and it also could be good reference to other DESIS-Locals.

DSEIS網絡由EzioManzini教授和他的研究團隊發起，無論是所圍繞的領域（社會創新與可持續設計）還是這個組織形式都充滿活力和探索精神。這個網絡的基本結構是由“DESIS—國際和DESIS—地方”組成。事實上，從地域背景和網絡系統上，每個DESIS—地方都有自己的特點。本著共同的愿景，以不同的方式運作。DESIS—中國就是一個典型的DESIS—地方，是由國內6所一流設計院校與米蘭理工的合作中共同發起成立的。這六所設計院校包括：清華大學美術學院，北京；江南大學設計學院，無錫；同濟大學設計創意學院，上海；湖南大學設計藝術學院，長沙；廣州美術學院設計學院，廣州；香港理工大學設計學院，香港。

自成立以來，DESIS—中國積極組織會議、研討會、論壇、展覽等各類學術和推廣活動，并積極參與或整合到其它大型的活動中，促進這個領域的交流與合作。它一方面強化了發起院校之間的戰略伙伴關系；另一方面，它產生了有效的學術和社會影響力。文章試圖展現DESIS在中國成長的軌跡，描述其背景，如何醞釀，籌備，發起和推動的，以及發生過和正在發生的事情。

在DESIS—國際和DESIS—中國籌備和成立期間，筆者正在師從EzioManzini教授攻讀米蘭理工大學博士學位，同時還保留國內江南大學設計學院教師的身份，這種雙重身份促使作者成為DESIS聯盟的主要推動者之一，參與了很多籌備工作。以此經歷，筆者嘗試梳理了一個相關事件列表，姑且稱之為“大事記”。這個大事記以CCSL項目的開始為開端，以今后幾個月即將來臨的活動結尾。某種程度上，DESIS聯盟是CCSL項目的后續產品，首先成立的是DESIS—巴西，DESIS—中國緊跟其后，很快延伸到各大洲。不過，DESIS—中國的背景還可以追溯本世紀初EzioManzini教授和Francois Jegou領導的“可持續日常生活”項目（SEP 2001-03）。在這個項目中，關于中國部分又源于香港理工大學的“在中國的戰略設計和可持續設計”（2000－2001）研究項目，當時Manzini教授作為設計學院的首席教授（杰出學者計劃）在香港理工訪問一年。國內有四個大學參與了這個項目，包括清華美院、湖南大學、廣州美院和香港理工。Manzini教授和香港理工的同事分別到各個學校組織工作坊和合作，這些活動成為國內設計界最早期的可持續設計探討。六年以后，CCSL-China項目又掀起了一次設計研討浪潮。

2006年10月，米蘭：CCSL項目啟動。CCSL是聯合國“可持續消費和生產”10年框架項目內的項目。由米蘭理工大學和比利時SDS主持。該項目包括在中國、巴西和印度的三個子項目。其在中國合作設計院校和教授為廣州美院設計學院的童慧明教授和馮樹教授。

2006年10月16－17日，北京：由英國文化協會、楊氏基金和中央編譯局比較政治與經濟研究中心共同組織的第一屆國際社會創新論壇在北京舉辦，Manzini教授受邀作為演講嘉賓。

2006年10月18日，北京：Manzini教授訪問清華大學美術學院。

2006年12月8－12日，汕頭：Manzini教授受邀參加李嘉誠基金贊助的“汕頭對話”。

2007年1月14－20日，香港：Manzini教授訪問香港理工大學，并組織設計工作坊。

2007年1月23－25日，廣州：Manzini教授和同事訪問中山大學公民社會研究所和廣州美院設計學院，協談CCSL-CHINA的合作。

2007年4月17日，米蘭：廣州美院童慧明教授和馮樹訪問米蘭理工大學，與Manzini教授會面。

2007年5月，上海－米蘭：米蘭理工大學和同濟大學產品服務體系設計雙學位課程啟動，為兩校在DESIS領域的教學合作提供了一個平臺。

2007年5月28日－6月6日，廣州：CCSL研討會在中山大學舉辦，CCSL 設計工作坊在廣州美院舉辦。

2007年5月30－31日，無錫：Manzini教授訪問江南大學，受邀作為江南大學客座教授。

2007年11月，香港：香港理工大學梁汀教授領導的亞洲風尚實驗室開始實施一項“中國生活形態”的研究項目，該項目與國內10個城市的10所設計院校合作。

2007年12月，米蘭（北京）：由米蘭理工大學可持續設計與創新研究所（DIS-Indaco）主持的歐盟LeNS項目啟動，清華大學美術學院作為全球7個合作伙伴之一參與項目，由蔡軍教授和劉新協調。

2008年6月，帕洛阿爾托：同濟大學婁永琪教授訪問斯坦福大學D-School，組織工作坊，啟動崇明島研究項目。

2008年7月10－12日，都靈：“改變變化：設計遠景，提案和工具”國際會議在都靈舉辦。

2008年9月－12月，無錫：江南大學與米蘭理工大學合作項目Chita08工作坊成功舉辦，隨后江南大學“DESIS研究中心”成立，成為推動該領域合作研究的基地。

2009年1月7－19日，無錫、長沙、北京、上海：Manzini教授的中國之旅。受國內湖大等4所大學的邀請，Manzini教授及其同事訪問了江南大學、湖南大學、清華大學和同濟大學，協談交流與合作。在江南大學，校長陳堅教授會見了Manzini教授，協談深入合作及兩校合作框架協議；在湖南大學，教授作為“芙蓉杯”大賽評委和嘉賓參加了頒獎典禮和論壇，發表演講；在清華大學組織了一個短期DESIS工作坊；在同濟參觀了崇明島項目并協談深入合作。近兩周的行程中，教授與各個大學和機構廣泛地交流溝通DESIS聯盟的提議。隨后與婁永琪教授、鞏淼森博士一道提出了關于DESIS-China聯盟的第一份建議書。

2009年3月9日，廣州：DESIS-China聯盟啟動會議。在廣州美院設計學院院長童慧明教授的召集下，來自6個聯盟發起院校的相關教授匯聚廣州美院，協商聯盟的基本框架和計劃。這次會議，標志著DESIS-China聯盟的正式成立。

2009年5月2日，紐約：DESIS-USA 啟動會議在新學校Parsons設計學院舉行，鞏淼森博士受邀參加并介紹DESIS-China聯盟的經驗，商談交流合作。

2009年3月－10月，無錫、上海、廣州、香港：由聯盟發起的第一個合作項目DESIS09在多所院校中展開。

2009年5月20－21日，米蘭：同濟大學校長裴鋼教授和婁永琪教授訪問米蘭理工大學，與米蘭理工大學校長GiulioBallio教授和Manzini教授會面。

2009年5月26日，上海：在同濟大學創意設計學院成立慶典中，聯盟與同濟大學共同舉辦了第一次DESIS論壇和展覽，這次論壇主要是交流和分享各發起院校在相關領域的研究和教學經驗和成果。

2009年7月7日，廣西：湖南大學設計學院社會創新設計夏令營“新通道”在廣西啟動。

2009年9月13－15日，米蘭：江南大學訪問團訪問米蘭理工大學，訪問團包括江大副校長王武教授、國交處處長劉麗霞教授、設計學院院長過偉敏教授等。訪問期間會見了Manzini教授，協商合作。

2009年10月15－21日，上海：國際DESIS展覽和論壇。在2009上海創意產業周期間，聯盟、同濟大學與組委會合作組織了“設計的下一站”國際DESIS展覽以及“連結世界”DESIS國際論壇。Manzini教授受邀作為論壇主講嘉賓。這次論壇旨在交流國內外這個領域的最新研究成果。

論壇當晚，召開DESIS-China聯盟的第二次成員會議，協商2010年的合作計劃。Manzini教授和Anna meroni教授出席了這次會議。

2010年2月25日，紐約：婁永琪教授訪問新學校Parsons設計學院，交流中美DESIS之間的合作。

2010年4月30日，上海：米蘭理工大學校長GiulioBalio教授參觀崇明島項目。

2010年6月19－20日，上海：12位來自6個聯盟院校的教授受邀參加中華創意產業論壇，并主持相關活動。期間召開了聯盟第三次成員會議，商討9月份相關活動實施計劃。

近期后續的活動和事件：

2010年8月，無錫：江南大學設計學院《創意與設計》第4期將推出DESIS專題欄目。

2010年9月7－10日，上海：Cumulus國際設計院校聯盟大會將在上海召開，在與DESIS國際聯盟合作的基礎上，將“可持續與社會創新設計”作為會議分主題之一。

2010年9月10日，上海：DESIS國際論壇和DESIS－國際聯盟會議將在世博會聯合國館舉行。

2010年9月12日，無錫：DESIS國際研討會 “為地方發展的社會創新設計”將在江南大學設計學院舉辦。

2010年9月12－19日，北京：清華美院與倫敦皇家藝術學院共同舉辦“當地的老年化”夏季班。

2010年9月13－18日，無錫：米蘭理工大學與江南大學再次聯手合作組織主題為“新農村、新城市、新生活”的食品網絡設計工作坊。

中國社會創新與可持續設計聯盟（DESISChina）成立僅有一年半載，但從籌備到目前似乎已經走過了很長的路。由于篇幅和作者掌握資料的限制，在這個“大事記”中只能有選擇性的記錄一些事件，也不可避免地遺漏了部分重要事件。無論如何，這個大事記能反映DESIS-China的一個總體歷程，回顧過去，展望未來，相信它不論對于DESIS-China還是其它DESIS地方機構都有一定的參考價值。
