BROOKSVILLE—Its the time of year again, when young bears are on their own for the first time. And that means more sightings where bears usually arent supposed to be.

This weekend, a 258-pound black bear took a brief tour of Brooksville, with police and firefighters chasing.

Another black bear, about 100 pounds, was spotted Saturday, crossing busy U.S. 19 near a retirement community in Spring Hill. Several other bear reports have come from Citrus County.

“It is really difficult to the younger bears to find their own land around here,” said Niki Everitt, Bear Hot Line director for the Gulf Coast Conservancy.

Brooksvilles bear first was spotted late Thursday crossing State Road 50, headed toward Tom Varn Park. Police and firefighters tracked the bear through the park and the Brooksville Quarry golf course. The bear then wound down the middle of Broad Street before being surrounded near Luigis Pizza. An official with the Florida Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission came with a tranquilizer spear(加入鎮靜劑的矛), planning to stick the bear by hand.

“The guy saw the size of the bear and figured that wasnt a great idea,” said Frank Phillips of the Brooksville Fire Department.

Emergency officials waited until a tranquilizer gun was brought from Land O lakes. The bear then got a free ride to the Chassahowitzka Wildlife Management Area.

“It is not unusual for bears to move into living areas this time of year,” experts say. Mothers give their male baby bears the boot once the youngsters are 2 years old. With living areas growing, the young bears keep finding smaller and smaller areas in which they can set up their own land. “Theyre trying to find a land of their own, where they wont get beat up,” said Rip Stalvey, a game commission spokesman.

Everitt said “People should not be too concerned about the recent bear sightings, since we have never had a bear attack in Florida.”

Black bears mainly eat the tender and fresh leaves of palms(棕櫚樹), as well as acorns and berries. Recent weeks of dry weather likely have reduced their food supply.

“If we dont get some relief soon,” Everitt said, “were probably going to see a lot more of it.”

Most of us are used to seasons. Each year, spring follows winter, which follows autumn, which follows summer, which follows spring. And winter is colder than summer. But the earth goes through temperature cycles over much longer periods than those that we experience. Between 65,000 and 35,000 years, the planet was much colder than it is now. During that time the temperature also changed a lot, with periods of warming and cooling. Ice melted during the warm periods, which made sea levels rise. Water froze again during the cold periods.

A new study from Switzerland, sheds light on where ice sheets melted during the ice age. It now seems that the ice melted at both ends of the earth, rather than just in either northern or southern regions.

This surprised the researchers from the University of Bern. Scientists have long assumed(假設) that most of the ice that melted was in the Northern hemisphere(半球) during the 30,000-year-long ice age. That belief was held because the North Pole is surrounded by land, while the South Pole is surrounded by the Antarctic Ocean. It is easier for ice sheets to grow on land. If surrounded by sea the ice can easily just slip into the ocean instead of building up.

The researchers used a computer model to look at ways the ice could melt and how it might affect sea levels. They compared these results to evidence of how temperatures and currents actually changed during that time. The model showed that if it was only in the Northern hemisphere that ice melted, there would have been a bigger impact on ocean currents(洋流) and sea temperatures than what actually happened. Studies suggest that melting just in the Southern hemisphere would have been impossible, too. The only reasonable conclusion, the scientists could make, was that ice melted equally in the North and the South.

It is still a mystery as to what caused the temperature changes that caused the ice to melt.

I recently returned from a trip to Denmark while producing a TV program about renewable energy for CBCs Nature Of Things. Today, Denmark produces 25 percent of its electricity using wind turbines(葉輪機). It hopes to be producing 50 percent of its electricity using the wind by 2020. As Torben Madse, vice-president of Vestas, the worlds largest producer of wind turbines, stated in an interview, “Where we have the best success with wind turbines is not necessarily where we find the best wind. It is where we have the political will.”

As the subject of the Pickering airport raised its ugly head this week with objection against the Greater Toronto Airport Authoritys suggestions to build an airport on the federal land, it occurred to me that rather than destroying this farm land, which is owned by the people of Canada, it should be turned into a wind farm to produce green energy. The class “A” agriculture land could still be farmed while the turbines contribute to our electricity needs.

For $1 billion, about 200 wind turbines could be fixed on the land and produce 550 megawatts of green energy. The project would also create jobs, which many local politicians keep crying for. The 200-tonne metal towers the turbines sit on would have to be fabricated locally. Building the solid foundation and the towers would create construction jobs. Skilled electrical jobs would be created as the turbines would have to be maintained over their 20-to-30-year life span. And like the Nystead wind farm off the coast of Denmark, a Pickering wind farm could attract tourists to the area.

A mistake was made years ago, when the land was expropriated(征用) for an airport. Lets correct that and make the right decision this time. A wind farm project on the federal land would benefit everyone. All we need is the political will.

Nature is full of color, from rainbows and roses to butterfly wings and peacock(孔雀) tails. Even the fruits and vegetables you eat have different colors: blueberries(藍莓), red strawberries, green broccoli, and orange carrots.

The key to fighting free radicals with fruits and vegetables is to mix and match colors. Its like sun screen(防曬劑) for the inside of your body. Go for a range of very bright colors. Colorful foods contain hundreds of healthy chemicals not found anywhere else. Research into how chemicals in blueberries affect the brains function in rats suggests that these chemicals may help our own brains work more efficiently.

Dont just blame the sun. Ultraviolet light isnt the only source of free radicals. If you breathe polluted air, such as smog, automobile exhaust(尾氣), or wasted gas from a factory, you take in chemicals that also cause such damage. And, the body itself produces free radicals as it processes food.
