In a notice published by the Ministry of Educationin February 2021, elementary and secondary schoolstudents are asked not to bring their cell phonesonto the campus, except when it is approved by theirparents along with a written application form.

Staring at a screen continuously for hours on endcauses focusing fatigue. Researchers have found highlevels of looking at a phone or tablet is linked witharound a 30 percent higher risk of short-sightedness,also known as myopia. But when it is combined withexcessive computer use, that risk rises to around 80percent. To avoid this, many eye experts recommendthe “20-20-20 rule”–looking away from your phoneor computer screen every 20 minutes and focusing onan object at least 20ft away for at least 20 seconds.Smartphone blindness happens when people lie on theirside at night, with one eye against the pillow and theother staring at the smartphone screen. While one eyeadjusts to the dark, the other eye gets used to the brightlight of the high-resolution screen.

An industrial design student Minwook Paenghas created a high-tech third eye that can be affixedto a person’s forehead and look out for obstacles asthey walk, while their real eyes are glued to theirsmartphone. Paeng’s Third eye consists of a translucentplastic case that is fixed directly to the wearer’sforehead with a thin gel pad. Inside this plastic eyeare a small speaker, a gyroscopic sensor and a sonarsensor. When the gyroscope detects when the user’shead is angled down, it opens the eye’s plastic eyelidand the sonar starts to monitor the area in front of theuser. When it detects an obstacle, it warns the wearervia the connected speaker. Paeng said his Third Eyeis the first project that tries to imagine what the futuregenerations of “phono sapiens”may end up looking like.
