5.elder adj. 年紀(jì)較長(zhǎng)的

注意：elder主要表示長(zhǎng)幼順序，尤指家庭成員的長(zhǎng)幼順序。

He is my elder brother.

辨析：elder與 older

這兩個(gè)詞均是old的比較級(jí)，在用法上有所區(qū)別。

（1） elder表示“前輩的；年紀(jì)較長(zhǎng)的”，僅用于同一家庭成員之間的比較；older則不限于此。

My younger son is five and my elder son is nine.

我的小兒子5歲，大兒子9歲。

Tom is two years older than Mary.

湯姆比瑪麗年長(zhǎng)兩歲。

（2） elder只能用來(lái)指人；older既可指人，也可指物。

My elder brother joined the army when he was only fifteen.

我哥哥年僅15歲就參了軍。

This dog is older than any other dogs here.

6.instead adv. 代替；反而；卻

He didn’t reply. Instead， he left the room.

辨析：instead 與 instead of

instead 為副詞，通常放在句首或句末，在句首時(shí)常用逗號(hào)隔開(kāi)，表示前面的事沒(méi)做，而做了后面的事。

instead of 為介詞短語(yǔ)。意為“代替，而不是”，后面可以接與前面并列成分相應(yīng)的名詞、代詞、v-ing形式等作介詞賓語(yǔ)。

He’ll go to Italy instead of France.

他要去意大利而不去法國(guó)。

He played the whole afternoon instead of doing his homework.

他玩了一下午而沒(méi)做作業(yè)。

7.whatever pron. 任何；每一

Whatever she did was right.

她所做的事情都是對(duì)的。

8.offer v. 主動(dòng)提出；自愿給予

offer側(cè)重主動(dòng)或愿意給予。

常用結(jié)構(gòu)：offer sb sth 給某人提供某物

offer to do sth 主動(dòng)提出做某事

She offered me a cup of tea.

她給我端了杯茶。

It’s very kind of you to offer to help us on the weekend.

9.explain v. 解釋；說(shuō)明

explain+that/what/why... 解釋……

explain sth （to sb） （向某人） 解釋某事

10. return v. 歸還；回來(lái)；返回

She left South Africa at the age of 15 and has never returned.

一、如何提建議

可以用Why don’t we/you do sth？ 來(lái)提出建議，表示“何不……？”

縮略形式： Why not do sth？

二、連詞 until， so that， though 的用法

1. until

until表示“直到……為止”。

（1） until用于肯定句中，謂語(yǔ)動(dòng)詞只能是延續(xù)性動(dòng)詞；表示動(dòng)作或狀態(tài)的持續(xù)。

（2） until引導(dǎo)時(shí)間狀語(yǔ)從句，當(dāng)主句用一般將來(lái)時(shí)時(shí)，從句一般用一般現(xiàn)在時(shí)。

（3） not until （與否定詞連用） 直到……之前，直到……為止。

The hot weather lasted until September.

炎熱的天氣持續(xù)到了九月。

I will stay here until he comes.

我會(huì)等到他來(lái)為止。

I didn’t wake up until I heard the alarm clock.

直到聽(tīng)到鬧鐘鈴聲我才醒來(lái)。

2. so that

so that 用來(lái)引導(dǎo)目的狀語(yǔ)從句，意為“以便，為了”。 so...that 用來(lái)引導(dǎo)結(jié)果狀語(yǔ)從句，意為“如此……以至于”。

He got up early this morning so that he could catch the early bus.

今天早上他早起，以便能趕上早班車。

He got up so early this morning that he caught the early bus.

今天早上他起得非常早，這樣就趕上了早班車。

3. although與though

although的意思是“盡管，雖然”，用來(lái)引導(dǎo)讓步狀語(yǔ)從句，在一般情況下可以和though互換，但though比較口語(yǔ)化，而although較為正式。當(dāng)although或though引導(dǎo)的從句放在句首時(shí)，主從句之間要用逗號(hào)隔開(kāi)。

Although I gave him some advice， he didn’t take them.

雖然我給了他一些建議，但他沒(méi)有采納。

Though he tried hard， he was not successful.

雖然他盡力而為，但他沒(méi)有成功。

注意：although和though都不能和but在同一個(gè)復(fù)合句里連用。
