三、閱讀理解(共15小題,每題2分,滿分30分)

A

Believe it or not, optical illusion (視錯覺) can cut highway crashes.

Japan is a case in point. It has reduced car crashes on some roads by nearly 75 percent using a simple optical illusion. But stripes, called chevrons (人字形), painted on the roads make drivers think that they are driving faster than they really are, and thus drivers slow down.

Now the American Automobile Association Foundation for Traffic Safety in Washington D. C. is planning to repeat Japans success. Starting next year, the foundation will paint chevrons and other patterns of stripes on selected roads around the country to test how well the patterns reduce highway crashes.

Too great speed plays a major role in as much as one fifth of all serious traffic accidents, according to the foundation. To help reduce those accidents, the foundation will conduct its tests in areas where speedrelated risks are the greatest curves, exit slopes, traffic circles, and bridges. Some studies suggest that straight, horizontal bars (水平桿) painted across roads can initially cut the average speed of drivers in half. However, traffic often returns to full speed within months as drivers become used to seeing the painted bars.

Chevrons, scientists say, not only give drivers the impression that they are driving faster than they really are but also make a lane appear to be narrower. The result is a longer lasting reduction in highway speed and the number of traffic accidents.

36. The passage mainly discusses .

A. a new type of optical illusion

B. a new pattern for painting highways

C. a new way of training drivers

D. a new way of highway speed control

38. Compared with straight, horizontal bars, what is the advantage of chevrons?

A. They will have a longer effect on drivers.

B. They can cut road accidents in half.

C. They will look more attractive.

D. They can keep drivers awake.

39. What does the author say about straight, horizontal bars painted across roads?

A. They are suitable only on broad roads.

B. They are falling out of use in the United States.

C. They are ignored in a long period of time.

D. They cannot be used successfully to traffic circles.

Animals are a favorite subject of many photographers. Cats, dogs, and other pets top the list, followed by zoo animals. However, because its hard to get them to sit still and “perform on command,” some professional photographers refuse to photograph pets.

One way to get an appealing portrait of a cat or dog is to hold a biscuit or treat above the camera. The animals longing look toward the food will be captured by the camera, but the treat wont appear in the picture because its out of the cameras range. When you show the picture to your friends afterwards, theyll be impressed by your pets loving expression.

If you are using fast film, you can take some good, quick shots of a pet by simply snapping a picture right after calling its name. Youll get a different expression from your pet using this technique. Depending on your pets mood, the picture will capture an interested, curious expression or possibly a look of annoyance, especially if youve awakened it from a nap.

Taking pictures of zoo animals requires a little more patience. After all, you cant wake up a lion! You may have to wait for a while until the animal does something interesting or moves into a position for you to get a good shot. When photographing zoo animals, dont get too close to the cages, and never tap on the glass or throw things between the bars of a cage. Concentrate on shooting some good pictures, and always respect the animals you are photographing.

40. Why do some professional photographers NOT like to take pictures of pets?

A. Pets may not follow orders.

B. Pets dont want to be bothered.

C. Pets may not like photographers.

D. Pets seldom change their expressions.

41. What is the use of a biscuit in taking pictures of a pet?

A. To capture a cute look.

B. To create a special atmosphere.

C. To arouse the appetite of the pet.

D. To keep the pet from looking at the camera.

42. What is the advantage of calling your pets name when taking a shot of it?

A. To help your pet look its best.

B. To make sure that your pet sits still.

C. To keep your pet awake for a while.

D. To catch a different expression of your pet.

43. In what way is photographing zoo animals different from photographing pets?

A. You need to have fast film.

B. You need special equipment.

C. You need more time to watch and wait.

D. You need to stay close to the animals.

When Peng Liyuan stepped off the plane in Moscow, the whole world wanted to know who dressed the elegant first lady. The reporter released the secret—Ma Ke.

Peng Liyuan has been wearing Ma Kes designs for more than a decade, a fact that was only highlighted recently when she was on her first state visit, accompanying her husband President Xi Jinping. The elegant and attractive Peng, formerly a popular singer, has been compared with the US first lady Michelle Obama and Frances Carla BruniSarkozy, since stepping off the airplane in Moscow on March 22. Suddenly, everyone was curious to know more about the first ladys wardrobe.

Even so, Ma prefers a lowkey approach. “If you eat a tasty egg why would you want to see the hen.” she says of all the media attention.

Mas relationship with Peng began 10 years ago after a concert in Guangzhou when a reporter told Peng she knew the designer behind the label Exception de Mixmind. Peng asked for an introduction because she was a fan of Mas designs and had been wearing them for years.

The two naturally became friends. Ma says, “The painting reflects the painter, and clothes reflect both the designer and the wearer. Someone desires fame and wealth, or love and sympathy;what you have in your heart is reflected in the design. Those who dont share my philosophy wont buy my clothes. Peng is a caring person, devoted to charity and environmental protection, which is exactly what Im doing now.”

However, regardless of the brand, Pengs support of Chinese labels has surprised millions of Chinese who favor foreign fashion brands.

“Instead she presented a vision of Chinese fashion, desiring to bring Chinese designers to the world stage,” says a western designer.

The first ladys doublebreasted coat and her black leather handbag arent available at any of Exceptions shops, though Exceptions physical stores do have seen a rising number of visitors.

Dr. Wiseman started “the laugh lab” project in September 2001. It is the largest study of humor. Participants are invited to log on to the laugh lab website, give a few personal details, tell their favorite jokes and judge the jokes told by other people.

The project will last for a year, and the organizers hope to finally discover the worlds funniest joke. But there is also a serious purpose. The researchers want to know what people from different nations and cultures find funny. And they want to find out the differences between the male and female sense of humor. The idea is that if we want to understand each other, we have to find out what makes us laugh.

This is a subject that has long attracted psychologists and philosophers. Most of the time, people are not completely honest. We do things that society expects us to and say things that help us get what we want. But laughing cannot be controlled. When we laugh, we tell the truth about ourselves. By December 2001 over 10,000 jokes had been submitted. This gave the scientists enough evidence to make early conclusions. It seems that men and women do have different senses of humor, for instance.

“Our findings show the major differences in the ways in which males and females use humor,” said Dr. Wiseman. “Males use humor to appear superior to others, while women are more skilled in languages and prefer word play.”

Researchers also found that there really is such a thing as a national sense of humor. The British enjoy what is usually called “toilet humor”. But the French like their jokes short and sharp: “Youre a high priced lawyer. Will you answer two questions for 500?” “Yes. Whats the second question?”

The Germans are famous for not having a sense of humor. But the survey found that German participants were more likely to find submitted jokes funny than any other nationality. Perhaps that proves the point. Is this joke funny?I dont know, but lets say yes, just to be safe.

Dr. Wiseman and his workmates also submitted jokes created by computer. But none of those who took part in the survey found any of them amusing. Perhaps this is relief. Computers already seem like they can do everything. At least they should leave the funny stuff to us.

47. Scientist started “the laugh lab” project .

A. to find the funniest joke in European countries

B. to know what funny people are like from different nations and cultures

C. to find out the differences between the male and female sense of humor

D. to get more personal details about participants

48. We can infer from the passage that .

A. most of the people all over the world are completely honest

B. psychologists and philosophers take interest in “the laugh lab” project

C. ordinary people are not interested in “the laugh lab” project at all

D. people tell the truth about themselves only when they laugh

49. According to the passage, we can safely say that .

A. jokes created by computer are less appealing to people

B. men and women have similar senses of humor

C. the project lasted from September, 2001 to December, 2001

D. scientists have collected enough evidence to make final conclusions

50. The writer gave the examples of the British, the French and the Germans .

A. to show the French people have a better sense of humor

B. to prove the British people have a sense of “toilet humor”

C. to show people from different nations have different senses of humor

D. to prove that the Germans have no sense of humor

四、任務型閱讀(共10小題,每小題1分,滿分10分)

請認真閱讀下列短文,并根據所讀內容在文章后表格中的空格里填入一個最恰當的單詞。注意:每個空格只填一個單詞。

ID systems are used as a means for people to prove their identity, as a means of access control, or for many other situations. ID cards also contain a lot more information than simply the name of the holder. All ID cards contain information that is relevant to the institution that released them, so there is no single model that applies to all ID cards.

Different institutions have different rules when it comes to ID cards, and ID cards used by students, in universities, will not have the same security features as those used in the military, for example. The more important the institution is, the more important the security is, and the more security features will be used to prevent duplication (復制) of an ID card.

Anyone with a printer that can print ID cards can duplicate in ID card, if it does not have any security measures. There have been lots of cases, especially in low security institutions, where ID cards have been duplicated and this was not noticed, since the person holding the card usually flashed it when it was requested, and that was not enough to notice that it is a fake.

That may not be extremely important when it is simply a case of a student trying to enter the campus of another university, but it can be of vital importance if it happens in a military institution. Checks in military institutions are much stricter and the personnel checking the card are always trained to spot fakes in a short amount of time.

Some may think that creating an ID card is extremely difficult, but it is not. All it takes is a special printer that can print ID cards, a model and a photo ID. The fact that such printers can be freely ordered online has raised security issues with lots of companies and institutions, and most have decided to either create their own ID cards, or simply use more advanced security features that regular homeusers do not have access to. This includes magnetic stripes(磁條), chips, barcodes (條形碼), and other methods. This does increase the cost of the card per person, so the total cost of the cards increases based on the number of employees the company has, but it also reduces security risks to a minimum.

So ID systems, as basic as they seem, are an excellent security measure for any institution. To ensure that the IDs look good and function properly, the company that handles the card printing services should be topclass. Trying to save some money by choosing a cheaper provider is not really wise. While some companies offer bonuses for large orders, if the quality provided is not of the highest standard, it is not worth it.

There was once a farmer who had a fine olive orchard (果園). He was very hardworking, and the farm always prospered (蒸蒸日上) under his care. But he knew that his three sons did not like the farm work, and were eager to reach the goal at a single leap.

When the farmer felt that his time had come to die, he called the three sons to him and said, “My sons, there is a pot of gold hidden in the olive orchard. Dig for it, if you wish it.” After the farmer was dead, the sons went to work to find the pot of gold. Since they did not know where the hidingplace was, they agreed to begin in a line, at one end of the orchard, and to dig until one of them should find the money.

They dug until they had turned up the soil from one end of the orchard to the other, round the treeroots and between them. But no pot of gold was to be found. It seemed as if someone must have stolen it, or as if the farmer had been wandering in his wits. The three sons were bitterly disappointed to have all their work for nothing. The next olive season, the olive trees in the orchard bore more fruit than they had ever given; when it was sold, it gave the sons a whole pot of gold.

And when they saw how much money had come from the orchard, they suddenly understood what the wise father had meant when he said, “There is gold hidden in the orchard. Dig for it, if you wish it.”
