【Abstract】:As we all know, The Pilgrim’s Progress is a very significant and influential book in the Christian literature in Britain.This paper will analyze symbolism about typical characters and journey in The Pilgrim’s Process as well as the influence on the society, thereby reflecting the reality of the society at that time.

I. The Symbol of The Pilgrim’s Progress
The symbol of The Pilgrim’s Process is divided into two categories: oracle class, Monster category. The symbols of this book has following aspects: (1)The symbol of characters.The hero is a typical image of the Puritans is the representative of ordinary people in the community at that time. And Satan's image symbolizes the variety of enemies encountered in the Christian journey. (2)The symbol of pilgrim's journey. A series of thrilling experiences are Christians to overcome the weaknesses of human nature and the various manifestations of moral self-improvement.
II. The Social Significance of The Pilgrim’s Progress
(1)Impact on Society Culture.This work has shown realism and humanism specialty care. The book is a fable that expressed in common human mentality , also caused our readers’ deep resonance.(2)Impact on the Social Class.In this book we can see Bunyan’s critique and dissatisfaction to the ruling class,which has shaken the dominance of the rulers.
III. Conclusion
From The Pilgrim’s Progress we can understand the significant influence that Puritanism brings to people of all ranks and classes. This paper not only shows that Puritanism throughout the whole book but also makes readers to have a better understanding of the book.It is not just a religious allegory, but also has profound historical meaning.
