Leave enough time- Know the minimum checkin time so you're not running late and factor in longer wait times at security so you arrive at the gate before your flight proceeding is closed.

Check your bags for tags-Those easily-missed, small stickers featuring barcodes or a series of numbers can confuse airport scanners making the difference between arriving with or without your luggage. Take any old ones off before you fly.

Name it- Including flight details, destination and a contact number on your checked luggage makes it easier for airlines to reunite you with your bags in the unfortunate event you arrive without them.

Know what to take- Depending on routing SkyTeam Elite and Elite Plus frequent flyers have an extra baggage allowance of 10kg for Elite members and 20kg for Elite Plus, or one additional bag where the piece concept applies.

Valuable advice- Keep your passport on your person and don't forget items such as money and electronic devices at security. Pack prescribed medication in your carry-on, not your checked bags; the same goes for valuables too.

Size matters- If you don't want to check it in, check your bag meets your airline's carry-on restrictions.

Take your time- Sometimes delays are simply unavoidable. A longer connection time not only increases your chances of catching the next flight -your bags are more likely to make it too.
