民俗民藝

中敖火龍——大足區中敖鎮在春節期間有舞龍、燒龍的習俗，火龍全長20余米，由龍頭、龍身、龍尾組成，多用竹篾扎架，麻線系頭，彩紙和絲綢裱糊。龍嘴設噴火裝置，龍身內裝火藥筒和油紙捻。燒龍以“火球”開路，舞龍者須赤裸上身，任由鐵水、煙火噴射，龍口亦噴火，一時硝煙彌漫、響聲震天，剽悍的舞龍者往來穿梭，直到將龍燒成光架，舞龍者并無半點損傷，頗為神奇壯觀。1999年中央電視臺《中國一絕》欄目曾到大足專題拍攝。

萬古鯉魚燈——大足萬古鯉魚燈舞是與銅梁龍舞齊名的民間舞蹈，肇始于清末，其雛型為“魚鰍吃湯圓”，后經數代民間藝人的不斷加工，逐漸演變、定型為“鯉魚搶寶”等形態及玩舞動作。萬古鯉魚燈具有較高的藝術價值，曾代表四川省參加全國文藝調演，并被《中國一絕》、《同一個星球》等欄目隆重推出，目前已成功申報為重慶市非物質文化遺產名錄。

The Restored Thousand-Hand Bodhisattva.

To implement the goal of “Inheriting cultural heritage，and building a Dazu dream”，on June 13th，the widely anticipated event，a celebration of China Cultural Heritage Day，was hosted at the Ruixiang Plaza which is the Dazu Rock Carvings World Cultural Heritage Exhibition Garden，in the home city Dazu. It is the 10th China Cultural Heritage Day，and with a theme of “Protecting the heritage，Sharing it with all”.

China Cultural Heritage Day is hosted by the State administration of Cultural Heritage and people’s government in Chongqing，and organized by Chongqing Culture Commission，Chongqing Cultural Heritage administration and people’s government at Dazu District.

Having an eight-year rescuing conservationwork，the thousand-hand bodhisattva，the“treasure of the national treasure”，is fi nally come to the public. Covering with over 1 million pieces of gold foil，the bodhisattva has welcomed thousands of visitors and pilgrims from all sides to see the grand scene themselves.

Model of Global Rock Carving Art

as one of the eight most famous rock carvings in the world，Dazu Rock Carvings has over 50，000 statues and over 100，000 characters of inscriptions. They are rock carvings with large scale，delicate carvings，various themes and rich content. among the carvings，Baoding Mountain Bas-reliefs on Precipices outstands itself with the creation principle of “telling stories，using emotions，tempting with happiness and threatening with misery”. It integrates scientifi c principles into the artistic modeling and is an epitome of rock carvings.

Dazu Rock Carvings was firstly created in 650aD （during Emperor Gaozong’s rein in the Tang Dynasty），known as “Jianshanzi Bas-reliefs on Precipices”. after that at late Tang Dynasty，military envoy Wei Junjing at the Jingnan Troop started to chisel stones and make statues. Officials，monks and nuns，and believers then followed Wei and built a lot of Buddha statues and temples，which had made the popularity of rock carvings possible.

However，as time passed by，Dazu lost its political and regional advantages and gradually faded away through many vicissitudes. Especially at late Ming and early Qing dynasties，Sichuan and Chongqing area suffered continuous wars and nobody was left in Dazu. as a result，the last monument in the rock carvings art history was buried in the ruins and disappeared in the ruthless times.

Date back to the previous days of the anti-Japanese war，in april 1945，Yiyou delegation led by the director of China Classics Museum Yang Jialuo paid a visit to Dazu Rock Carvings，waking up this long-buried art treasury and giving the Carvings an opportunity to reappear and become famous worldwide.

after the foundation of PRC，Dazu Rock Carvings was attached with high importance，for it is a peak in the global rock carvings art history. In 1961，the State Council announced the first national culture relics protection sites list，and Dazu North Mountain and Baoding Rock Carvings are on the list.

In the spring of 1990，with her aspiration and resolution，the previous director of Dazu Rock Carvings Museum Guo Xiangying started to apply for the world heritage list. She hoped that the“masterpiece of the genius” could be recognized by the world.

In December 1999，all World Heritage Committee members agreed to list Dazu Rock Carvings into the World Inheritance Dictionary at the 23rd committee meeting. It since then became China’s second world heritage rock carving，and Mo Kao Grotto at Dunhuang was the first. The protection work of Dazu Rock Carvings had stepped onto a new stage since 1999.

Dazu Rock Carvings were rooted in Ba-Shu culture. They absorbed and integrated early days’ essence of rock carvings and the essence of Confucianism，Buddhism and Taoism into themselves. They got rid of the stale and brought forth the fresh； they used various techniques to make out numerous variety. The distinct characters of nationalization and secularization made it a special model in global rock carvings art. It is also praised as a marvelous jewel of oriental art and a masterpiece of genius.

The Rescuing Project on Thousand-Hand Bodhisattva

The Baoding Mountain Thousand-Hand Bodhisattva in Dazu Rock Carvings was first excavated in the Southern Song Dynasty. It is 7.7 meters tall and 12.5 meters wide with a history of over 800 years. It is the biggest cliff inscription that integrated with carving，painting and gilding. The shape looks like a peacock spreading its tail，golden and shiny. This has become an important representative work in Dazu Rock Carvings，and has been regarded as “treasure of the national treasure”.

The major damages to rock carvings include weathering，water seepage and the stability of rock mass. Water seepage is the biggest killer to rock carving statue. after 800 years of weathering，the thousand-hand bodhisattva suffered 34 types of damages from man-made，environmental and climate factors. at the very beginning of the 21st century，it was already unbearably broken，and the Wenchuan earthquake in 2008 further affected the damage.

In 2008，rescuing thousand-hand bodhisattva was listed as the Project One in national stone cultural relics by the State administration of Cultural Heritage. With the support from the State administration of Cultural Heritage，project owner Dazu Rock Carvings Research Institute，together with the organizer China Cultural Heritage Research Institute，invited Dunhuang academy China，China University of Geosciences Qsinghua University，Peking University，Beijing University of Civil Engineering and architecture and Hehai University to put heads together，and teamed up with professional and effi cient experts，gathering full of ideas. The team prospected the damages and started its more than four years’ protective restoration on april 18，2011.

This rescuing conservation has employed science and technology from all parts. It is the largest，the most comprehensive and the most scientific restoration，which has reserved all the information in the statue and provided reference for the protection of other stone cultural relics. The most important thing is that the techniques and materials used in the restoration have broken many records in the restoration history of cultural relics，generating mass reference value and making it a forerunner of cultural relic restoration project. The methods it adopted include uncovering the golden foil and pasting it back，solidifying the weathered stone，complementing incomplete stone and rinsing paintings. In total，the project used over 1 million pieces of golden foils and completed the restoration of 830 hands and 227 musical instruments. The area covered 222.15 square meters. Zhan Changfa，a researcher at China Cultural Heritage Institute and the director of the restoration project，said that this restoration would promise at least 50 years of beautiful appearance of the thousand-hand bodhisattva.

Zhan also said that the restoration team also introduced some advanced conservation experience from abroad to the thousand-hand bodhisattva. It used methods and techniques such as industrial x ray inspection，infrared thermography detection，laser Raman measuring，3D video microscope observation，which were the first time of application on large unmovable stone cultural relics in China. The restoration also realized the surveying and mapping and digital preservation of the thousand-hand bodhisattva with 3D laser scanning technique. Between 2009 and 2010，the team utilized more than 5 kinds of 3D scanner with different functions to make survey and mapping. The scanner would emit lasers，followed by computer’s calculating its 3D shape. after obtaining the 3D data，the team completed 297 damage maps and 1，855 damage surveys byhand，laying a solid foundation for the restoration work.

The Unknown Restoration Process

The restoration project was completed in april 2015 and was checked and accepted in early May. It opened to the public on the China Cultural Heritage Day event. Li Fangyin，the director of Chongqing Dazu Rock Carvings Institute，revealed some unknown details in the restoration process.

We have restored 34 damages，with 1.5 tons of reinforcement material and over 1 million pieces of gold foil. “The restoration of the thousand-hand bodhisattva in Dazu Rock Carvings is a huge and long project.” Li Fangyin listed some numbers: 4 kinds of materials including stone，gold foil，color paint and mud had been used； the restoration area reached 220 square meters； it involved with 1.5 ton reinforcement materials，100 pieces of gold foils，research and guidance from more than 120 experts from fields of historic preservation，fine art and archaeology，50 restoration team members，28，080 work days，restoration of 34 damages and fi nally it concluded a 700，000-word investigation report.

all these numbers bring up the reappearance of the magnificent and grand thousand-hand bodhisattva. Li expressed that compared with the previous one，which had a broken arm，a gloomy painting and incomplete gold foil，the new one that was going to reappear on June 13 could be called“splendid and magnifi cent”.

Usage of traditional skills to preserve the original charm.The question is after this huge restoration work，will the thousand-hand bodhisattva still keep its historical feeling of 800 years？Li expressed that restoration was not a “plastic surgery，” and the thousand-hand bodhisattva was still keeping its grand shape and delicate appearance. During the restoration，to guarantee the stability of the bodhisattva，reinforcement materials were used and previous gold foil were taken off to make place for new foils. This is the traditional method to restore Dazu Rock Carvings - repeated painting and gilding. “Not only the materials are traditional，skills and techniques are traditional too.” Li introduced. By ancient means，the gold foil is made of raw lacquer （a natural cold coating）. This kind of skill is called raw lacquer painting； it is also a national non-material cultural heritage. “The thousand-hand bodhisattva in Dazu Rock Carvings is a precious cultural relic. We need to ensure its safety and respect its value as well.” Li said that the new thousand-hand bodhisattva still remained its charm of 800-year history.

The Thousand-Hand Bodhisattva Came to Public in the End

Project One of the National Stone Cultural Relic Conservation，the rescuing conservation project on thousand-hand bodhisattva was officially completed on June 13th. after 8 years of overhaul，the thousand-hand bodhisattva came into public with a brand new appearance. Tong Mingkang，deputy director of the State administration of Cultural Heritage，stated on the completion ceremony that the end of the project was not the end of the protection work； instead，it was a new start. Department of Cultural Relic will keep monitoring and evaluating on the relic，continue observing the cause of the damage，the condition of the damage and take responsive protective measures to avoid further damages and try to remain the solemnity and beauty of the thousand-hand bodhisattva for another 800 years.

As the reporter saw on the site，the 800-yearold thousand-hand bodhisattva’s main body sat on the lotus throne with a solemn facial expression and radiant face，glistening in golden light. The past dim and mottled appearance totally disappeared. Liu Shuguang，director of China Cultural Heritage Institute，said that after dynasties of repairmen，there were many layers of gold foils on the face of the bodhisattva，making it looks puffy. This time，the 0.3cm-thick old gold foil was uncovered so the “new” appearance of the bodhisattva was actually the original appearance in the Southern Song Dynasty. The thousandhand bodhisattva reappeared with past glory.

according to the Buddhist historical records，Chinese Tantra became popular at the beginning of the 8th century in the Yellow River basin. at the beginning of the 9th century，Japanese monk Konghai took it to Japan，and after that the Tantra declined in China. However，numerous statues and numerous inscriptions on North Mountain and Baoding Mountain have disputably shown that from the 9th century to the 13th century，Tantra did not disappear in Sichuan； instead，it was at a fl ourishing time.

at late the 9th century （late Tang Dynasty），Yidam Liu created Tantra in west Sichuan，and called himself “Principal of Yoga Tantra in Tang Dynasty”. He followed ascetic practices to preach. at the 12th century and the mid-13th century （middle of Southern Song Dynasty），the eminent monk Zhao Zhifeng inherited the Tantra and called himself “the founder of sixgenerations-pass Miyin”. Dazu Rock Carvings are made up of the bas-reliefs on precipices on North Mountain，Baoding Mountain，South Mountain，Shizhuan Mountain and Shimen Mountain （“fi ve mountains”）. They are the best preserved grotto art clusters in China and are well-known for their large scale，delicate carvings and abundant themes. above all，“fi ve mountains” are a must see in Dazu Rock Carvings.

North Mountain Rock Carving

North Mountain，anciently known as Longgang Mountain，is 1.5 km north of downtown Dazu with a height of 545.5 m. The bas-reliefs on precipices on North Mountain were firstly carved in late Tang Dynasty and were completed in Southern Song Dynasty. It centered at Buddhist Bay，spreading to fi ve surrounding places such as Guanyin slope，Barracks slope，Foer Rock and Beita Tower. The bas-reliefs on precipices are approximately 300 meters long and 7 meters high. Its crescent moon-shape，dense caves，264 statues，1 intaglio pictures，8 dhvajas，delicate carvings and adept skills gave it the title of “a jewel in the crown of China grotto art.”

Baoding Mountain Rock Carvings

Baoding Mountain is 15 km northeast of downtown Dazu with a height of 527.83m. Baoding bas-reliefs on precipices were fi rstly created between 1174 aD-1252 aD，Chunxi Year to Chunyou Year in Southern Song Dynasty，and was completed by “the founder of six-generations-pass Miyin” Zhao Zhifeng. It took him over 70 years to fi nish this 10，000-statue Buddhist Tantric Site. Baoding bas-reliefs on precipices centered at Shengshou Temple，spreading to places like Dafo Bay，the main body，and Xiaofo Bay Statue. Other 360 large-scale carvings were set in the east，south and north.

South Mountain Rock Carvings

South Mountain is named by the fact that it is located at 2 km south of downtown Dazu. South Mountain bas-reliefs on precipices were created in between 1131 aD and 1162 aD （Shaoxing Year in South Song Dynasty）. a little supplement was made in Ming and Qing Dynasty. Now it has 15 Taoism statues； Triple Purity Cave is a representative.

Shimen Mountain Rock Carvings

Shimen Mountain is located at Shimen Village，Shima Town，20 km east of downtown Dazu，with a height of 374.1m. It was created in the period of 1094-1151 aD，in Northern Song and Southern Song Dynasties. The length is about 71.8m； the cliff is about 3.4-5m high. There are 12 shrines of statues，20 inscriptions for the building of Buddhist sculptures，8 stone tablets and 8 repairing inscriptions. It is the combination of Buddhist and Taoist statues.

Shizhuan Mountain Rock Carvings

Shizhuan Mountain is located in Fohui Village，Sanqu Town，25 km southwest of downtown Dazu，with a height of 444.6m. Shizhuan bas-reliefs on precipices were created in the period of 1082-1096 aD，in Northern Song Dynasty. The cliff surface is about 130 m long. Represented by the Laojun Cave Statue，it is a typical combination of Buddhism，Taoism and Confucianism，which is very rarely seen in grottoes.

National Water Recreation Conservancy — Longshui Lake

Longshui Lake is located at the foot of Bayue Mountain，15km south of downtown area. It is the only national water recreation conservancy in Chongqing. Longshui Lake has an area of over 370 hectares，and an impoundment of over 15 million cubic meters. It is praised as “the West Lake in Dazu”for its clear water，the mist above the water and 108 small islands covered with green shades. The islands are in different shapes，embellishing the lake like stars. When paddling on the lake，you can see the lake melting into the sky at far； it is a retreat to the nature. In the conservancy，you can find Longshui Lake International Recreation Holiday Resort，which is a large and multifunctional resort combined with sightseeing，experiencing fun，relaxing and recuperating.

Longshui Lake Spring

Dazu Spring Club is along the side of Longshui Lake，the national water recreation spot. With national forest park Yulong Mountain on the back，it enjoys a beautiful scenery and highquality spring. The temperature at the mouth of the well is 62℃，and the daily capacity reaches 6，000 cubic meters. It is evaluated as the most ideal spring at the west of Chongqing with its high mineral content and the ability of keeping people’s well-being. The club adopts the three-star-level decoration standard，setting spring baths，bathtubs in different sizes，private rooms，recreation parlors for TV and fi lms. Shengshou Temple

Having one of the eight major grottoes in the world，Dazu is a place with a thousandyear history of Buddhist culture. The Standing Committee member of the CPPCC and

President of the Chinese Buddhist association，Chan master Yi Cheng，once wrote an inscription for Dazu: Dazu，capital of Buddhism and spring of spirit. Dazu now has many historical temples including Shengshou Temple，Guangda Temple，Miaogao Temple，Shunshui Temple and Zhengjue Temple. These temples are famous around the world and are popular throughout the year. Every year millions of tourists come here to pay respect to Buddha and make pilgrimage.

Live CS Base

Longshui Lake Live CS is located at the foot of Yulong Mountain. During the construction，resources around the site were fully utilized. Shima Catholic Zhenyuan Church — A Century Church

Zhenyuan Church in Shima Town，Dazu District is the largest public Catholic Church in Chongqing. Built in 1904，it is along the Dazu-Tongliang Road and is 16 km from downtown Dazu. The bell tower is 36 meters tall. There are ancient trees inside the church and the atmosphere is quiet. It has deep infl uence in west Chongqing and has almost 10，000 believers. The church was decorated and repaired in 1984，1988 and 1996. It is the best preserved church in southwest China and has been listed as a cultural relic protection site by Chongqing government.

Chongqing Dazu Fragrant Crabapple Historical Garden

Chongqing Fragrant Crabapple Historical Garden is at the core area of Dazu（China’s famous tourist city，the hometown of rock carvings）East New area. It lies in the Chengdu-Chongqing core economic zone and is only one hour drive from downtown Chongqing to the garden.

Hardware Museum

China Dazu Hardware Museum is a national aa tourist attraction of museum type. The museum is located at the west of China West Chongqing International Convention Center in Longshui Town，the capital of hardware in west China. Lotus Village

Lotus Village was built in June 1997. It covers an area of 53 hectares； the planned area is 124 hectares. Its total investment is 99.8 million RMB. The village is 3 km from Dazu Baoding Rock Carvings and is 5km from downtown Dazu. It has lotus agricultural sightseeing，farmer-style catering，water ornamental plants program and lotus-made food. Lotus Village is a leading enterprise of Chongqing agricultural industrialization，the first highend agri-tourist site in China，leading enterprise of practicing popularization of science in countryside，leading enterprise of achieving material civilization and spiritual civilization，and a national aaa tourist attraction. Folkway and Folk Art

Zhongao Fire Dragon—In Zhongao Town，Dazu District，Dragon dance and Dragon Burning is a custom during the Spring Festival. The dragon is over 20 meters and is made up of the head，the body and the tail. Bamboo strips are made to make the skeleton； threads are used to make the head； color printing paper and silk are used to paste on the skin. a device to spit fi re is set at the mouth of the dragon； a powder fl ask and a lamplighter are set in the body. The dragon burning starts with a fi reball. The performer has to be upper body naked to welcome the spray of molten iron and fi re. as the dragon starts to spit fire，there will suddenly come a cloud of smoke and great noise. The brave performers will shuttle back and forth until the dragon is burnt to skeleton. The performers will be safe and sound without any injuries. In 1999，CCTV’s China’s Talent came to Dazu and made a special program for the Fire Dragon.

ancient Carp Latern—Dazu ancient Carp Latern，together with Tongliang Dragon Dance，is a fold dance. It originates from the late Qing Dynasty and is fi rstly performed as “Loaches eating rice dumplings.” after generations of improvement it fi nalized its practice and motions as “Carp rushing for the treasure.”This high artistic valued dance has been shown in national gala and was recommended by programs like China Talent and One Planet. Now it has been approved to become one of the Chongqing non-material cultural heritages.
