關于這首歌的謠言至今仍在網上流傳——認為是為紀念甲殼蟲樂隊（The Beatles）被槍殺的主唱約翰·列儂（John Lennon）而作，然而歌曲所述的事件和列儂謀殺案并無關系。列儂是在晚上11點前被射四槍，而歌曲中的時間是凌晨四點，且槍擊數為六；且列儂遇襲時并沒有歌詞中所描述的“激戰”。在1995年的一次采訪中，當被問及《Moonlight Shadow》是否指代約翰·列儂謀殺案時，歐菲爾德回應道：“并非如此……當然，當我回顧的時候，也許是吧。其實我是在他被槍殺的那個可怕的晚上到達紐約的，我住在維京唱片公司在佩里街的房子里，那兒離事發地僅相隔幾條街，所以它可能深埋于我的潛意識當中了。它最初靈感來自于我喜愛的電影——托尼·柯蒂斯（Tony Curtis）主演的《胡迪尼》（Houdini），通過靈媒聯絡死去的胡迪尼……歌曲原來的影響本該如此，而這以外其他影響卻是我未曾想到的。”
