Ms. Nychka: I think the biggest thing that helps with being a teacher is that you have to have a personality that’s not selfish, one that is completely giving, and realizing that it’s all about the student.
Student A: She believes in every one of us and she believes in our abilities to do well as a student. That also makes me feel that I can do well.
Ms. Nychka: I’m finding things new every single year because it’s a new group of kids every single year. I appreciate them, and it’s refreshing.
Mr. Brooke: I’m a grade 3 teacher. My job is to motivate, engage and make kids wanna come to school. Teaching’s not easy. There’s a lot of work involved, there’s a lot of management, organization, lots of responsibility. But, at the end of the day, it’s worth it.
Ms. Nychka: I was very surprised at how busy teaching would be. I didn’t expect to come so early during the day or stay so late.
Mr. Brooke: Before I started teaching I thought I knew it all. I thought, I thought I had a grasp of what teaching was. But as soon as I had my own classroom, I realized it was very different. This is a job where you learn something new every day, and you’re constantly developing your professional identity.
Ms. Nychka: It helps having an outgoing person who’s able to talk to kids, but, at the same time, I’ve seen really good teachers who were very quiet and do just as good a job. I think you also need to have a lot of energy in order to be a teacher.
Student B: Miss Nychka’s passion for teaching really inspires me in class to be a better student, and a better writer.
Ms. Nychka: When I see that “aha” moment for the first time, I get excited. I get really excited, and I enjoy that I helped a kid achieve something. That’s fantastic!
Mr. Brooke: Being a teacher is really, really satisfying. I’ve never had a job where at the end of the day I have a smile on my face and my heart feels, like, this big.
There’s a time to learn and there’s a time to be a kid. And if you can combine the knowledge side and the fun side, you can create a wonderful classroom environment.
When students walk away smiling, with a better understanding of the curriculum, and they want to come back to school tomorrow, then I’ve done my job. That’s what teaching is all about, and that’s why I love teaching.
