“Cool” is a word with many meanings. Its old meaning is used to express a temperature that is a little bit cold. As the world has changed, the word has had many different meanings.
“Cool” can be used to express feelings of interest in almost anything.
When you see a famous car in the street, maybe you will say, “It’s cool.” You may think, “He’s so cool,” when you see your favorite football player.
We all maximize (擴大) the meaning of “cool”. You can use it instead of many words such as “new” or “surprising”. Here’s an interesting story we can use to show the way the word is used. A teacher asked her students to write about the waterfall (瀑布) they had visited. On one student’s paper was just the one sentence, “It’s so cool”. Maybe he thought it was the best way to show what he saw and felt.
But the story also shows a scarcity (缺乏) of words. Without “cool”, some people have no words to show the same meaning. So it is quite important to keep some credibility (可信性). Can you think of many other words that make your life as colorful as the word “cool”? I can. And I think they are also very cool.

I came to the small town a week ago. I sold some clothes to a shop. Christmas was coming and I hoped to buy some presents for my family and friends. So I tried to meet the manager and ask him to pay for them. I was out of luck. He went to London and I had to wait for him here. There was no theatre here but a cinema. The films were all too old. Half an hour later, I felt hungry. I had to get up. It was white everywhere and some children were skiing down the hill. On my way to the small restaurant, I saw a boy falling on to a rock (巖石). Do you know why different animals or pests (昆蟲) have their special colors? Colors in them seem to be used mainly to protect themselves.
Some birds like eating locusts (蝗蟲), but birds cannot easily catch them. Why? It is because locusts change their colors together with the change of the colors of crops (莊稼). When crops are green, locusts look green. But as the harvest time comes, locusts change to the same brown color as crops have. Some other pests with different colors from plants are easily found and eaten by others. So they have to hide themselves for lives and appear only at night.
If you study the animal life, you’ll find the main use of coloring is to protect themselves. Bears, lions and other animals move quietly through forests. They cannot be easily seen by hunters (獵人). This is because they have the colors much like the trees.
Have you ever noticed an even strange act? A kind of fish in the sea can send out a kind of very black liquid (液體) when it faces danger. While the liquid spreads over (散開), its enemies (敵人) cannot find it. And it immediately swims away. So it has lived up to now though it is not strong at all.

Last week, all the teachers and students of our school watched a special performance by some disabled people. The first program was a dance named The Light of Life. To my surprise, all the dancers had lost one of their legs. As they were performing, I could see how they had to face so many difficulties. However, they showed us many wonderful programs. From these programs, I could see how lively their minds were.
The two persons who came out next shocked us all. The first one was a singer. He was very young, but unfortunately, he had lost both of his hands in a big fire. The song he brought us was Late Autumn and he sang it in such a low and sweet voice. Though it was warm spring, I felt a little cold when I heard the song, as if it was really late autumn. “How much love and feeling is hidden in my heart? I wish to hold your hands again.” Hearing this, I could not keep back my tears.
The other one was also a young man. He lost both of his arms when he was six. From then on, his feet became his “hands”. However, he could manage a number of things with his feet. What moved us was his feet-writing. The two words “Flying High” expressed his wishes.
Disability (殘疾) doesn’t mean complete failure. Once you try hard, miracles (奇跡) will happen sooner or later. I believe where there is a will, there is a way.
56. What did the writer do last week?
57. What did the writer learn from the programs?
58. What happened to the first singer in the big fire?
59. What made the writer cry?
60. What does the writer want to tell us?
