Ⅴ. 閱讀理解
“Switching off the television may help prevent children from getting fatter—even if they do not change their diet or increase the amount they exercise,” US researchers said last week.
A study of 192 third and fourth graders, generally aged eight and nine, found that children who cut the number of hours spent watching television gained nearly two pounds (0.9kg) less over a one-year period than those who did not change their television diet.
“The findings are important because they show that weight loss can only be the result of a reduction in television viewing and not any other activity,” said Thomas Robinson, a pediatrician(兒科專家)at Stanford University.
“American children spend an average of more than four hours per day watching television and videos or playing video games, and rates of childhood being very fat have doubled over the past 20 years,” Robinson said.
In the study presented this week to the Pediatric Academic Societies annual meeting in San Francisco, the researchers persuaded about 100 of the students to reduce their hours of viewing television by one quarter to one third.
Children watching fewer hours of television showed a significantly smaller increase in waist size and had less body fat than other students who continued their normal television viewing, even though neither group ate a special diet or took part in any extra exercise.
“One explanation for the weight loss could be the children who didn’t stick to the television might simply have been moving around more and burning off fat,” Robinson said.
“Another reason might be due to eating fewer meals in front of the television. Some studies have suggested that eating in front of the TV encourages people to eat more,” Robinson said.

Among various programs, TV talk shows have covered every inch of space on daytime television. And anyone who watches them regularly knows that each one is different in style. But no two shows are more opposite in content, while at the same time standing out above the rest, than the Jerry Springer and Oprah Winfrey shows.
Jerry Springer could easily be considered the king of “rubbish talk”. The topics on his show are as surprising as they can be. For example, the show takes the ever-common talk show titles of love, sex, cheating, and hate, to a different level. Clearly, the Jerry Springer show is about the dark side of society, yet people are willing to eat up the troubles of other people’s lives.
Like Jerry Springer, Oprah Winfrey takes the TV talk show to its top. But Oprah goes in the opposite direction. The show is mainly about the improvement of society and different quality of life. Contents are from teaching children lessons, managing work week, to getting to know neighbors.
Compared to Oprah, the Jerry Springer show looks like poisonous waste being poured into society. Jerry ends every show with a “final word”. He makes a small speech about the entire idea of the show. Hopefully, this is the part where most people will learn something very valuable.
Clean as it is, the Oprah show is not for everyone. The show’s main audiences are middle-class Americans. Most of the people have the time, money and ability to deal with life’s hard problems. Jerry Springer, on the other hand, has more of a connection with the young adults of society. These are 18-to-21-year-olds whose main troubles in life include love, relationship, sex, money and drug. They are the ones who see some value and lessons to be learned through the show’s exploitation.
1. Though the social problems Jerry Springer talks about appear unpleasant, people who watch the shows ___ .
A. show disbelief in them
B. are ready to face up to them
C. remain cold to them
D. are willing to get away from them
2. Which of the following is likely to be a topic of the Oprah Winfrey show?
A. A new type of robot.B. War.
C. Family income planning.D. Street accident.
3. What can we learn from the text?
A. The two talk shows have become the only ones of its kind.
B. The two talk shows exploit the weaknesses in human nature.
C. The two talk shows appear at different times of the day.
D. The two talk shows attract different people.
4. What is the advantage of the Jerry Springer show?
A. The show points out the dark sides of society.
B. The show pours poisonous waste into society.
C. Jerry makes a conclusion of the whole idea of the show.
D. Jerry talks about the improvement of society.

Most dog owners feel that their dogs are their best friends. Almost everyone likes dogs because they try hard to please their owners. One of my favorite stories is about a dog who wanted his owner to please him. One of my friends has a large German shepherd named Jack. Every Sunday afternoon, my friend takes Jack for a walk in the park. Jack likes these long walks very much.
One Sunday afternoon, a young man came to visit my friend. He stayed for a long time, and he talked and talked. Soon it was time for my friend to take Jack for his walk, but the visitor didn’t leave. Jack became very worried about his walk in the park. He walked around the room several times, then sat down directly in front of the visitor and looked at him. But the visitor paid no attention. He continued talking. Finally, Jack couldn’t stand it any longer. He went out of the room and came back a few minutes later. He sat down again in front of the visitor, but this time he held the man’s hat in his mouth.
German shepherds aren’t the only intelligent dogs. Another intelligent dog is a “seeing-eye dog”. This is a special dog which helps blind people walk along the streets and do many other things. We call these dogs seeing-eye dogs because they are the “eye” of the blind people and they help them “see”. Seeing-eye dogs generally go to special schools for several years to learn to help blind people.
