第三部分 閱讀理解(共20小題,每小題2分,滿分40分)
(A)
Education is not an end, but a means to an end. In other words, we don’t educate children only for the purpose of educating them. Our purpose is to fit them for life. In some modern countries, it has for some time been fashionable to think that by free education for all—whether rich or poor, clever or stupid one can solve all the problems of society and build a perfect nation. But we can already see that free education for all is not enough. We find in some countries a far larger number of people with university degrees’ refuse to do what they think “low” work, and in fact, work with hands is thought to be dirty and shameful in such countries. But we have only to think a moment to understand that the work of a completely uneducated farmer is far more important than that of a professor. We can live without education, but we die if we have no food. If no one cleaned our streets and took the rubbish away from our houses, we should get terrible disease in our towns.
In fact, when we say that all of us must be educated to fit us for life, it means that we must have education in such a way. Firstly, each of us can do whatever work suited to his brains and ability and secondly, we can realize that all jobs are necessary to society and that is very bad to be ashamed of one’s work. Only such a type of education can be considered valuable to society.
1. The writer of the passage thinks that ____.
A. education can settle most of the world’s problems
B. free education for all probably leads to a perfect world
C. free education won’t help to solve social problems
D. all the social problems can’t be solved by education
2. The writer wants to prove that ____.
A. our society needs all kinds of jobs
B. our society needs free education for all
C. a farmer is more important than a professor
D. people with university degrees refuse to do what they think “low” work
3. According to the passage, ____.
A. the work with hands is dirty and shameful
B. the work with hands is low work
C. the work with hands is the most important
D. we can’t regard the work with hands as “low work”
4. The purpose of education is ____.
A. to choose a system of education
B. to prepare children mainly for their future work
C. to let everyone receive education fit for him
D. to build a perfect world

You can use your Business Tele-card International at any card phone in the United Kingdom. Here is some information about making international phone calls.
You can now phone almost any country in the world, although in some cases you can only call big cities. When you can’t make direct dialing calls, you can ask the international operator to help you. This is more expensive and takes more time, but it may be helpful if you want to speak to a particular person and no one else in this case you should ask for a “person-to-person” call. Even more expensive is a reverse(反向的) charge call where the person who receives the call pays.
If the international line is busy, you can reserve(回機) a call, explain the number you want and the operator will call you back when the line is free.
You can save money by calling outside office hours, for example, early in the morning, late at night, and on Sundays.
Remember that the time may be different in the country you are calling. International time is based on GMT and Moscow, for example, is 3 hours ahead.
There is one problem: change to DST(Daylight Saving Time) for the summer. In the UK, clocks are put forward one hour in the spring and put back in the autumn, and so London is one hour ahead of GMT in the summer.
1. What is the most expensive type of call?____.
A. Direct dialB. Through the operator
C. Reverse charge callD. Calling outside office hours
2. What can you do if the international line is engaged?____.
A. Ask the operator to call you back later
B. Make a “person-to-person” call
C. Call back outside office hours
D. Wait and call again when the line is free
3. How many hours is Moscow ahead of London during the summer?____.
A. 2B. 3C. 4D. 5
4. If you want to use your Business Tele-card International, you have to ____.
A. use a card phoneB. phone on Sunday

In most large Japanese companies, there is a policy of lifetime employment. What this means is that when people leave school or university to join an enterprise, they can expect to remain with that organization until they retire. In effect, the employee gets job security for life, and can only be fired for serious mistakes in work. Even in times of business recession(衰退), he or she is free from the fear of being laid off.
One result of this practice is that the Japanese worker identifies closely with his company and feels strong loyalty to it. By working hard for it, he believes he is safeguarding his own future. It is not surprising that devotion to one’s company is considered a great virtue in Japan. A man is often prepared to put his firm’s interests before those of his immediate family.
The job security guaranteed by this system influences the way employees approach their work. They tend to think in terms of what they can achieve throughout their career. This is because they are not judged on how they are performing during a short period of time. They can afford to take a longer perspective(遠景) than their Western counterparts.
This marriage between the employees and the company—the result of lifetime employment—may explain why Japanese workers love the products their company is producing and why they are willing to stay on after work, for little overtime pay, to join in earnest discussions about the quality control of their products.
1. Lifetime employment in the Japanese company means that the employee ____.
A. leaves his company only when business is bad
B. gets a job soon after he leaves school or university
C. can work there throughout his career
D. can have his serious mistakes in work corrected
2. Which of the following statements is not true?____.
A. Family and company interests are equally important
B. The Japanese worker is very loyal to his company
C. One’s future is guaranteed through hard work
D. Devotion to one’s company is encouraged
3. Lifetime employment influences one’s ____.
A. achievements at workB. performance at work
C. career opinionsD. attitude toward work
4. The Japanese worker is fond of his company’s products because of ____.
A. his marriage with the daughter of the president
B. the close link between him and his company
C. his willingness to work overtime
D. his active participation in quality control

London—Terror struck in the heart of London on Thursday as explosions ripped through three subway trains and blasted(炸開) the roof off a crowded red double-decker bus. At least 37 people were killed and more than 700 wounded in the deadliest attack on the city since the blitz(閃電戰) in World War Ⅱ.
British Prime Minister Tony Blair blamed Islamic extremists and said the bombings were designed to happen at the same time as the opening in Scotland of a G-8 summit of the world’s most powerful leaders. Foreign Secretary Jack Straw said the bombings—which came the day after London won the bid to host the 2012 Olympics—have the “hallmarks(特點) of an al-Qaida-related attack.”
Trapped passengers in the Underground railway threw themselves on the floor, some sobbing. As subway cars quickly filled with smoke, people used their umbrellas to try to break the windows so that they could get air. Passengers appeared from the Underground covered with blood and soot. On the street, in a light rain, buses ferried the wounded, and doctors used a hotel as a hospital.
“I didn’t hear anything, just a flash of light, people screaming, no thoughts of what it was. I just had to get out of the train,” said subway passenger Chris Randall, 28, who was hospitalized with cuts and burns to the face, the legs and hands.
“It was chaos(混亂),” said Gary Lewis, 32, escaping from a subway train at King’s Cross station. “The one haunting image was someone whose face was totally black (with soot) and pouring with blood.”
Police said there had been no warning and that the blasts at three subway stations went off within 26 minutes, starting at 8:51 a.m. in an Underground train just outside the financial district. Authorities at first blamed a power failure but realized it was a terror attack after the bus bombing near the British Museum at 9:47 a.m.—less than an hour after the first explosion.
1. Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage?____.
A. How the British government reached to the attack

D. How the trapped subway passengers escaped
2. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?____.

B. Terror attack happened right after the closing of G-8 summit
C. Explosions had terrible effects on the survivors of the attack
D. The worst explosion was the one that happened at 8:51 a.m.
3. The underlined word “soot” in the passage probably means ____.
A. black coalB. broken glassC. dusty blackD. rags
4. The best title of the news report can be ____.
A. After London Wins the Bid for 2012 Olympics
B. London Terror Bombing Kill 37, Wound 700
C. G-8 Leaders Meet Against Terrorism
D. Chaos in London Following Multiple Explosions

It has been said that everyone lives by selling something. Everyone has something to sell. However, I seem to be the only exception to this general rule. In this modern time, I, a tramp(流浪漢), seem to be the only person who has nothing important to do for society. As a result of laziness and failure in my exams 20 years ago, I have become downfallen to this condition.
But I’ll never sell myself like a beggar to arouse the sympathy of passers-by. Once, I was sitting down on the ground outside a shop and was thinking of something when a man passed me. He threw a coin towards me without saying any word. I felt very angry, picked up the coin and threw it into a beggar’s bowl. I didn’t know why I did this. My only thought was to prove that I was not a beggar.
I’ve nothing to sell and require nothing from others. In seeking independence, I’ll never sacrifice my human dignity. Maybe I will ask others for money sometimes, but I’ll never ask you to feel sorry for me. I have chosen to lead the life I lead on purpose and know well about the results. I try my best to lead a free life, although I can never be sure where the next meal is coming from. But I am free from the thousands of anxieties, which trouble other people. I travel from place to place with ease because of my few material possessions. I sleep in the open air, so I get far closer to nature. I may hunt, beg, or steal occasionally to keep myself alive. I may even, in times of real need, do a little work, but I will never sacrifice my freedom.
My steps will cover the whole world. At times I may admire millionaires with their beautiful women, cars, red walls and green tiles(瓦). At times I may admire a family man with hisgood-natured wife and lovely child. At times I may admire successful people who receive beautiful flowers and applause. But I don’t want to be them. They have lost too much in order to fulfill their dreams. I don’t want to lose anything, because I have nothing to lose.
Don’t put me in the same class as beggars. I can honestly say “I AM A TRAMP!” How many other people can honestly say that they have not had a little envy of my simple and carefree way of life?
1. The author thinks of himself as ____.
A. an evil manB. a thoughtful manC. a proud manD. an honorable man
2. What does the underlined sentence “They have lost too much in order to fulfill their dreams” mean? ____.
A. They work very hard so as to live only a happy life
B. They have to sacrifice their dignity for the sake of pleasing others
C. They have to sacrifice a lot on the purpose of a little success
D. All they have achieved is just like a dream lasting a short time
3. According to the passage, the author is mainly concerned about ____.
A. social relationshipB. others’ attitude
C. personal experienceD. personal independence
4. What would be the best title for the passage?____.
A. Don’t Get DownfallenB. Finding Freedom for Nothing
C. Don’t Call Me a BeggarD. A New Way of Life
