Some prisoners in the UK will be locked up for only a few days a week and be free to work or live with their families for the rest under the country’s “weekend jail” scheme, which started last week.
The experimental program is meant to reduce the number of re-offending. Research shows that criminals serving short sentences who have jobs and partners to return to when they come out are more likely to go straight. It could also ease some of the pressure on overcrowded prisons.
Some would be locked up at weekends but free during the week, and vice-versa. The UK Home Office admitted that even those locked up at the weekends could be allowed out during the day to do community work. They would only be expected to spend the night in their cells.
“Intermittent custody(間歇監禁) can play a key role by punishing offenders at the same time as ensuring they undertake programs to make reparation(補償) to the community,” said Home Secretary David Blunkett.
However, prison reformers have warned that weekend custody should not be used in practice to lock up more people who would previously have been given community service.
Sexual or violent offenders will not be eligible for the scheme. It will be limited to those serving sentences of up to 26 weeks—such as drunk-drivers or some types of burglars.
Prisoners who failed to turn up on time to be locked up would risk being sent to full-time custody.
Some experts say that part-time prison could avoid prisoners leaving jail unemployed, homeless and without family support, which make them more likely to re-offend.
1. It can be concluded from the passage that ____.
A. it can be dangerous for the criminals to leave the jail
B. intermittent custody is suitable for most prisoners
C. those serving short sentences can benefit from the scheme
D. all the prisoners are locked up on weekends
2. Which of the following is NOT the aim of the program? ____.
A. To avoid re-offendingB. To ease the pressure of some prisons
C. To help the prisonersD. To cut the cost
3. What does the underlined part “be eligible for” mean? ____.
A. Be satisfied withB. Be fit to be chosen for
C. Be in favor of D. Be responsible for
4. The best title for the passage would be ____.
A. Out Of Jail At LastB. Part-time Imprisonment
C. Out Of Jail For The WeekendsD. Lucky Prisoners

I was in the middle of coding a web page when my wife emailed me these questions: Ever wonder what it would be like to have the face, the brains, the personality and the body? What it would be like to have everyone stop when you walk in a room? What it would be like to be able to get anything or anyone you want?
I stopped for a moment and thought about it, because my wife wouldn’t email me this unless something had driven her to do so. I emailed her back with what I thought was a pretty good answer. Here is what I wrote her back.
Yes, I had thought many times about what it would be like to be one of the beautiful people. To be able to take your breath away when I walked into a room, or to be the life of the party and have everyone’s eyes fixed upon me as I wore only the finest clothes and showed the perfect body? But then I always came back to the realization that a lifestyle like that is so easily broken. As you get older, your body changes; as you get older the money changes. Your body never looks the same; the clothes become more and more expensive to continue. And once you have crossed the line, suddenly you are out. The next fresh face comes in, and you are quickly forgotten.
All through growing up I was never an attractive person. I was overweight and laughed at. But that didn’t stop me from being a nice person—a good, clean, funny, helpful person. I was the person who you came to when you needed a friend after a breakup. I was the one you came to when you needed a joke to brighten up your day. And in the long run, I will be the one you remember, not the new face, or the fresh style.
In closing, I would like to say that we, as people, have developed into looking for things that are bigger and better instead of what will last. I don’t know about you, but I will remember the friend who helped me when I was down, more than the beauty I just saw walking down the street.

New York City consists of five boroughs: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island. The population is about 7.5 million living in Manhattan. Manhattan, the center of the city, is on an island between the Hudson River and the East River. Most of the famous buildings such as the Empire State and the United Nations and other skyscrapers are in Manhattan. Some of its districts are: Broadway, which has many theaters and cinemas; Fifth Avenue with stores and apartments; Greenwich Village, where many artists and writers have lived; and Central Park, with a small zoo and a skating rink. From Manhattan you have to cross to the other boroughs through a tunnel or over a bridge. The bridge from Brooklyn to Staten Island is the longest in the world.
New York is the second largest port in the world and it has two airports: Kennedy International for international flights and La Guardia for flights inside the USA. The people who live there come from all over the world and speak many different languages; there are 324,000 Germans and 3,900,000 Poles as well as people from Greece, Scotland, Ireland, Hungary, Italy and Romania. Everyone would like to be a millionaire but can you imagine having over $30 million and only being 20 years old? Britney Spears from Kentwood, a small town in Louisiana, is only 20 years old; she is an international pop superstar with not only $30 million but also a $2 million house in LA. At her young age, she can look after her family financially all her life.
This year is a big year for Britney; she is currently on a 31-date tour of the US and every concert is a sellout. That means she plays in front of a crowd of around 18,000 every time. It’s a tiring schedule but brings great rewards. When touring, she goes to bed around 1 a.m. and then has a lie-in until 1 p.m. or 2 p.m. the next day. Her philosophy(人生觀) is to take care of the body and relax but always make sure you work hard and have fun.
Spears is not satisfied with only touring and selling nearly 40 million records so she has decided to branch out into the movie business and try a bit of acting. She made an appearance in “Austin Powers 3” this year and she is filming a teenage comedy that will be released in March 2003. In this movie, she has a starring role. The movie was her own concept and she picked the writer.

What should you think about in trying to find your career? You are probably better at some school subjects than others. These may show strengths that you can use in your work. A boy who is good at mathematics can use that in an engineering career. A girl who spells well and likes English may be good at office work. So it is important to know the subjects you do well in at school. On the other hand, you may not have any specially strong or weak subjects but your records show a general satisfactory standard. Although not all subjects can be used directly in a job, they may have indirect value. A knowledge of history is not required for most jobs but if history is one of your good subjects you will have learned to remember facts and details. This is an ability that can be useful in many jobs.
Your school may have taught you skills, such as typing or technical drawing, which you can use in your work. You may be good at metal work or cookery and look for a job where you can improve these skills.
If you have had a part-time job on Saturdays or in the summer, think what you gained from it. If nothing else, you may have learned how to get to work on time, to follow instructions and to get on with older workers. You may have learned to give correct change in a shop, for example. Just as important, you may become interested in a particular industry or career you see from the inside in a part-time job.
Facing your weak points is also part of knowing yourself. You may be all thumbs(笨拙) when you handle tools; perhaps you are a poor speller or cannot add up a column of figures. It is better to face any weakness than to pretend they do not exist. Your school record, for instance, may not be too good, yet it is an important part of your background. You should not be sorry for it but instead recognize that you will have a chance of a fresh start at work.
1. Which of the following best sums up the first paragraph? ____.
A. The importance of doing well at school
B. Using school performance to help to choose a career
C. The importance of being good at all subjects
D. The indirect value of schoolwork
2. The writer thinks that for a student to have a part-time job is probably ____.
A. a waste of time that could have been spent on study
B. useful for his future work
C. a good way to earn extra money
D. a good way to find out his weak points
3. According to the passage, if a student’s school record is not good, he ____.
A. will be a complete failure in his future work
B. will not be able to find a suitable job
C. will regret not having worked harder at school
D. may do well in his future work
4. The whole passage is mainly on ____.
A. choosing a career according to what one is skilled in
B. acquiring knowledge by working hard at school
C. finding one’s strong and weak points
D. developing one’s abilities useful in school work
