Jacqui: Hello and welcome to Ask AboutBritain, the programme wherewe answer your questions aboutBritish life and institutions.I’m Jacqui.
QUESTION:
I want to know is China really…is influentialin Bri ta in ? Or Chinese culture…a re t he yfascinating to British people?
Jacqui: Is China influential in Britain? Are Britishpeople fascinated by Chinese culture? Asusual, we talked to a few people about theirviews on Chinese culture:
Chinese culture seems to me somewhatmysterious, but within that, it…it’sthe enormous breadth[廣泛的范圍] of it coveringnearly all part of the arts–sculpture[雕塑], painting. And it…it’s so ancient and weknow relatively so little about it. On the…the more ordinary front, I find most ofthe different foods, whether Cantoneseor Mandarin, absolutely delicious.Overall, yes, I…I find the whole Chineseculture fascinating.
Jacqui : So the conclusion is he findsChinese culture fascinating. While a lot ofpeople here like Chinese food, they also havesome doubts.
I love Chinese food, but I suspect thatthe Chinese food we get served here inEngland is far inferior[低劣的]to…to the kind ofChinese food you would get in China.
Jacqui: She suspects that the Chinese foodhere is far inferior to the kind of Chinesefood in China. Apart from Chinese food, whichis always related to Chinese culture in thiscountry, people are interested in other areasas well.
I have seen a few films and theydefinitely have a very…a style all of theirown , a very opulent[華美的] kind of look which I alwaysenjoyed. So I suppose if…if Iam to pick one thing–I thinkI have always been very interestedin kind of healthand medicine, becauseobviously there’s a biginterest in sort of Chineseherbalism[中草藥醫(yī)學(xué)]andeverything here. Thereis just something aboutthe way these systemsof health and exercisehave been developed overso many years. They…theyseem very interesting and kindof, therefore, very powerful,I think, because they’veobviously been really, really thoughtabout.
Jacqui: He mentioned Chinese films and saidthat they have a very opulent look which healways enjoyed. But whathe is most interestedin is Chinese medicine. He says there is a biginterest in Chinese herbalism in the UK–hemeans Chinese herbal medicine. So far wehave heard some British views on Chinese art, music, food and medicine.
Yang Li: But there is more to it.
Jacqui: Well, China isvery much in the newsevery day, and Chineseproducts are seen inall the shops.
Yang Li:I can hearChinese being spokenalmost every timeI travel on the Itravl on the train.
Yang Li:Bye.
