Daniel Craig’s second outing as Bond follows on from where Casino Royale left off, with 007 determined to find out the truth behind his betrayal by Vesper Lynd, the woman he loved. Marc Forster directs…
Even before the title was announced on 24 January 2008, much was already known about Bond 22, the follow-up to Casino Royale.
However, before we get 1)embroiled in details of the plot and production, that title needs a little explanation. Unless you’re an obsessive fan of all things Bond-related, you may not be aware that Quantum of Solace was a short story written by Bond creator Ian Fleming and first published in a magazine in 1959. Later it appeared in the 1960 short story collection For Your Eyes Only, Fleming’s eighth Bond book, which lent its name to the twelfth Bond film in 1981.
Unlike the traditional Bond tales, the story Quantum of Solace was more of an experimental parable, in which Bond is attending a tedious dinner party at the governor’s house in 2)Nassau, in the 3)Bahamas. After the guests have left, the governor recounts a tale to Bond involving a civil servant and an air hostess, the moral of which concerns lost love and revenge. The phrase “quantum of solace” itself refers to the final 4)motes of compassion.
After the announcement that the name of the story were being used for the film, Craig explained, “If you don’t have that quantum of solace then there’s not much worth fighting for. It’s a lot to do with where he’s at from the end of the last movie. He’s had his heart broken and he’s going out to find the guy who is responsible.”
If you recall, Casino Royale culminated with the collapsing building in Venice in which Vesper died. Mr White (5)Jesper Christensen), the mysterious
6)assassin who was involved with the blackmailing of Vesper, was tracked by Bond and captured.
The official synopsis of Quantum of Solace reveals that Bond and M(7)Judi Dench) learn of the powerful organisation behind White through his interrogation. This is Green Planet, which has double-agents in 8)MI6 and the 9)CIA. The chief 10)baddie appears to be “businessman” Dominic Greene(11)Mathieu Amalric) who fronts Green Planet. They are plotting a 12)coup in Latin Ame-rica with one General Medrano(Joaquín Cosio) to “take total control of one of the world’s most
important natural resources”.
This provides the 13)pretext for Bond’s 14)globetrotting, and enables the film to introduce the girls. Despite talk of the 15)franchise’s rebirth, these two elements remain very much in place. The Bond girls this time round are “beautiful but 16)feisty Camille, a woman who has her own 17)vendetta”, played by
18)Ukrainian actress 19)Olga Kurylenko, making the transition from 20)wannabe Bond movie 21)Hitman to actual Bond movie; then there’s fellow MI6 agent Fields, played by young British newcomer Gemma Arterton, head girl at the 22)rebooted 23)St Trinian’s.
As for the director, Marc Forster, better known for his character studies than action movies, took up the job, having completed 24)Finding Neverland and 25)The Kite Runner, the 2007 film he was working on when he took the Bond 26)gig.
Forster said, “I was surprised, and I had to think hard about whether I wanted to do it. I’m not sure I could have found a way into Bond before Daniel Craig reinvented him.” He said that Craig’s Casino Royale Bond was “very isolated, a man who’s damaged in some way…a completely new interpretation of the character.” Forster also noted that Bond’s mother was Swiss, like his own, giving him more of a connection with the character. (Forster was born in Switzerland, with a German father, and is the first non-27)Commonwealth director to
28)helm a Bond film.)
Shooting began in August 2007. We’ll have to wait until November to find out how Craig 29)fares in his second excursion as Bond, but in the meantime, think about the villain he’s facing. In creating Dominic Greene, French actor Mathieu Amalric has said, “I’ve been taking details, the smile of Tony Blair, the craziness of Sarkozy, he’s the worst
villain we’ve ever had. He’s really dangerous. In fact he walks around thinking he’s in a Bond film.” Sounds deeply creepy.
