摘 要：whether和if都有“是否”的意思，在英語學習中容易混淆。本文從九個方面詳細分析了它們的區別，指出了應該注意的一些問題，來幫助英語學習者正確地使用whether和if。

連詞whether和if常用來引導名詞性從句，不作句子成份，詞義為“是否”，而且都不能省略。whether可以用于所有的名詞性從句中，而if一般只用于賓語從句中。我們可以從以下幾個方面了解whether與if的區別。

一、引導主語從句、表語從句、同位語從句時都用whether

Whether he will be able to come is unknown．(主語從句)

他能不能來還不知道。

The question whether he should come himself or send another one hasn’t been decided．(同位語從句)他親自來還是派人來，這個問題還沒定下來。

The problem is whether we’ll be able to arrive in time．(表語從句) 問題是我們是否能夠及時到達。

注意：whether引導主語從句在句首時，不能用if代替。

例如：If he’ll come hasn’t been decided．(×)

但如果是用it作形式主語時，whether和if都可以用來引導主語從句。

It is not clear to me whether／if she likes the present．

她是否喜歡這件禮物對于我來說還不大清楚。

二、在引導賓語從句作動詞的賓語時，whether和if常可以互換。但從句中如果有or not提出兩種選擇時，只能用

whether，不能用if

I don’t know whether／if he can come．

我不知道他是否能來。

Let me know whether you can come or not．

你能來還是不能來，請告訴我一下。

Tell me whether or not you are interested．

告訴我你有沒有興趣。

三、雖引導賓語從句，但為了強調賓語部分，也可把從句放在句首，此時只用whether不用if

Whether he will come I am not sure.他是不是來我拿不準。

四、介詞的賓語從句只能用whether引導

I haven settled the question of whether I’ll go back home．

我是否回家，還沒有定。

It all depends on whether the weather looks good．

一切都取決于天氣如何。

She was undecided about whether she should accept his offer．

她拿不定主意應該不應該接受他的好意。

五、在帶to的不定式前只能用whether，不能用if

She doesn’t know whether to get married now or wait．

她不知道是現在結婚，還是等等再說。

He hesitated about whether to drive or take the train.

他開車去還是坐火車去，猶豫不決。 ，

The question is whether to go to Munich or Vienna．

問題是去慕尼黑還是去維也納。

六、用if會引起歧義時，要用whether來引導

Please let me know whether you want to go．

你是否想去，請告訴我一下。

(如換成if，則既可看作條件從句又可看作賓語從句。)

We discussed whether we should close the shop．

我們討論了是否該把店關掉．

(如換成if，同樣也能引起歧義。)

七、如果賓語從句是否定結構，則用if，而不用whether

I don’t care if he doesn’t show up．

他來不來我都不在乎。

Dinner was almost over when Dan，still looking hungry，grinned and asked Dave if he wasn’t going to have some bread．

晚飯快吃完時，丹(他看上去還沒吃飽)笑著問戴維還要不要吃些面包

八、在及物動詞discuss后的賓語從句中，只能用whether，不能用if

We discussed whether we should make a change in our plan. 我們討論了是不是要對我們的計劃作一些修改。

We were discussing whether we should discuss the business with them. 我們正在討論我們是否要和他們談這個生意。

九、在引導讓步狀語從句時，用whether…or…不管是…還是…

Well resolutely wipe out the intruders whether they come from the land，the sea or the air.

不管侵略者從陸上來、海上來，還是從空中來，我們都要堅決消滅之。

Whether you like it or not，you must do it well．

不管你喜歡還是不喜歡，你必須把它做好。

Whether or not it rains／Whether it rains or not，we’re playing football on Saturday.

無論下不下雨，我們星期六一定踢足球。
