2To be honest,in her decade as a freshman dean at a university,Julie Lythcott-Haims saw many first-year students come to college with a lot of academic knowledge but big gaps in their life skills.

3“Many students think they'll pick them up at home the way they pick up language,but they actually don't necessarily.They've sort of forgotten to learn it,”said Catherine Newman,academic department coordinator(協(xié)調(diào)人)of the creative writing center at Amherst College.

4“Preparations for college have changed culturally in recent years,”said Lythcott-Haims,author of the booksHow to Raise an AdultandYour Turn:How to Be an Adult.She said more and more pressure has been placed on us to get into highly ranked colleges and the message we and our families are getting is that college acceptances come from the perfect application.And society says that comes from the“perfect childhood”.

5That perfect childhood,focused on the highest levels of involvement in extra-curricular activities,leaves little room for us to learn how to care for ourselves and others.Lythcott-Haims said we were micromanaged by our parents to get to this place our parents call success,and yet in handling too much for us,our parents undermine our ability tothrive.
