1. take place 發生;進行;舉行

take place為不及物動詞短語，不能用于被動語態。

We may never discover what took place that night. 我們可能永遠不會知道那一夜發生了什么事情。

The film festival takes place in October. 電影節于十月舉行。

Where did the story take place？ 這個故事是在哪里發生的？

take the place of 取代;代替;take sb.s place 坐某人的座位;代替某人的位置;be in place of 代替;in place 在平常或應在的地方;合適的;replace... with... 用……代替……;in ones place 處于某人的位置;out of place 不在應在的位置

I had to go out so Jane took my place at the meeting. 我得外出，因此簡代替我去參加了會議。

【辨析】 happen， take place

happen作“發生;舉行”解時是不及物動詞，沒有被動語態，常常具有偶然性，特別是“人”作主語時;happen to也可接名詞，表示“遭到”或“偶然發生”某種情況;take place 作“發生”解時也是不及物動詞短語動詞，主要是指事先安排的“發生”，它沒有偶然的意思。

2. belief n. 信任;信心;信仰

His story is beyond belief. 他的話難以置信。

There is nothing more natural than a childs belief in his parents. 沒有任何事情比孩子對他父母的信賴更為自然。

beyond belief 難以置信的，令人吃驚的;難以想象地，非常地;have belief in 相信，信任;believe v. 相信，信任，認為，想;believe it or not 信不信由你;believe in 信仰，信任某人

dress sb. / oneself up 把某人/自己打扮起來;be dressed in 穿……衣服;dress down 責備，指責

The man is dressed in blue. 那男人身穿藍色衣服。

I was dressed down by the teacher for lateness. 我因為遲到而受到老師的責備。

to在這里是介詞，后面應該用名詞或者動名詞形式。

look forward to中的to是介詞，其后接名詞或動名詞，其他類似短語還有：get down to 開始（認真）做;devote oneself to 獻身于……;致力于……;be / get used to 習慣于……;pay attention to 注意……;make contribution to 做出貢獻

Im going to get down to studying English this term. 這學期我要認真學英語了。

Ive decided to devote myself to the nation after finishing my study. 我已經決定學成后投效祖國。

You must pay attention to this problem before every thing. 你應該首先注意這個問題。

5. as if / though好像

as if / though可以位于系動詞look， seem， feel， sound， smell等后引導表語從句，從句常使用虛擬語氣，形式是：①如果表示與現在事實相反的假設，謂語動詞應使用一般過去時;②如果表示與過去事實相反的假設，從句謂語動詞用had+過去分詞;③如果表示與將來事實相反的假設，謂語動詞用would /could / might+動詞原形。

It looks as if the weather may pick up very soon. 看來天氣很快就會好起來。（實現的可能性較大，謂語用陳述語氣）

He looks as if he were an artist. 他長得好像一位藝術家。

It seems as if our team is going to win. 看來我們隊要勝了。

I feel as if high school was only yesterday. 我覺得高中就像昨天一樣。

【拓展】

as if / though也可以引導方式狀語從句，引出的狀語從句謂語多用虛擬語氣，表示與事實相反，漢譯常譯作“仿佛……似的;好像……似的”。

They completely ignore these facts as if / though they never existed. 他們完全忽略了這些事實，就仿佛它們不存在似的。

He was singing as though / if he hadnt had / didnt have a care in the world. 他唱著歌，好像人世間他沒有憂慮。

6. turn up開大（音量等）;翻起;出現;（尤指失去后偶然）被發現

She turned up the missing papers under her notebook. 她在她的記事本下找到了丟失的文件。

We had been waiting for him for a long time， yet he didnt turn up. 我們等了半天也沒見他來。
