Located in Qingshui Bay, Sanya, Hainan Province, Sanya Sea-view Art Center neighbors main roads to the north, by-passes to the west, and the yacht dock to the east. The height difference between the southwest and the northeast of the plot is approximately four meters. In terms of the design of the main entrance, the architects focused on the wide main road to the south and made meticulous efforts to present a friendly and approachable interface to the city while lowering the height of the main entrance on the north side and lifting the sea-facing area by utilizing the natural height difference of the site.
The continuous ramp on the southeast side is the highlight of the entire project. As an element that connects internal and external spaces of the construction, it removes the barriers between floors, and joins functional spaces such as the theater, training, and restaurants to ensure a continuum of different spatial dimensions for coastal life. The ramp also helps to create interesting shadows. While the protruding ramp section on the east side blocks out the scorching sunlight of Sanya, it also creates shadows in different areas, which, being part of the site, present new sights.
Each ramp section leads to different views, such as the sea, the skies and crowds of people. Visitors can appreciate changing scenes as they walk on in a carefully designed scene incorporating all these elements. The ramp introduces outside scenes into the inside to connect with internal spaces, thus blurring the boundaries of the interior and exterior spaces.
The art center is composed of two parts, namely, a theater and leisure facilities. The theater, with nearly 1,000 seats, is located on the first floor, with the stage being 28.5 meters high. Complete with all mechanical equipment, it can meet needs for all sorts of performances. As for the backstage, the architects made a bold attempt for innovation by designing the traditionally closed backstage into an openable one with a curtain that can integrate the view of the sea into stage scenes once it is lifted, thus extending the stage out to the sea. The leisure facilities placed above the theater provides a better scenic view. Because of that, the open backstage of the theater is blessed with more possibilities for stage performances.
