Mount Fuji now gets its own internet connection-and its not even the weirdest place in the world where you can send Facebook updates from. The Japanese government installed a wifi connection up the mountain， so that people can stay connected even as they ascend 14 and then come backdown.

Though the wifi connection has beenmocked as just a way of letting people post their celebratory Instagram snaps just a little earlier， it could actually keep those climbing the mountain safe. Theyll be able to look out for weather warnings and take shelter accordingly， and the wifi will let people call for help even if theyre out of range of a phone connection.

The wifi is available in a series of spots along the ascent， and protected with a special password. It Will only be free for the first 72 hours after people connect. Fuji joins a list of other places around the world-and aboveit-that have their own wifi connections.

Mount Qomolangma has had wifi since 2010， when a company installed hotspots on it. The highest hotspot on the mountain （and presumably the world） is 17，000 feet up， at the last basecamp that people visit before they make their last push for the top.

Reuters： Cyber security researcher Ruben Santamarta says he has figured out how to hack the satellitecom munications equipment on passenger jets through their WiFi and in flight entertainment systems-a claim that， if confirmed， could prompt a review of aircraft security.

Santamarta， a consultant15 with cyber security firm IOActive， is scheduled to lay out the technical details of his research at this weeks Black Hat hacking conference in Las Vegas， anannual convention16 where thousands of hackers and security experts meet to discuss emergingcyber threats and improve security measures.
