back（背）構造的習語趣談

我們每個人都有“back”，back這個詞構成了許多習語。掌握這些習語可以幫助我們擴充詞匯量并提升英語表達能力。

back是人的背部，人看不到自己的背部，所以when sb.'s back is turned，即轉過身去背朝人，也就是看不見別人時，別人就可以為所欲為。例如：They laughed at me when my back was turned. / They laughed at me behind my back. 這兩句都是指“當面不干，背后干某事”。

turn one's back on則是有意識的行動，指有意背朝著人，即故意采取不理睬的態度以表示憤怒或輕視，引申指“離開、擺脫”“拒絕、拋棄”，也就是“不給任何支持”。此外，也可用give the back to或give sb. the back來表示同樣的意思。但give/make a back to只有字面義，指自己彎下腰來讓人借助自己的背攀登或跳過。

人們交往都是面對面的，所以be glad to see the back of sb.則表示不愿與人交往，即“巴不得某人離開，希望擺脫某人”，可簡化成see the back of...，例如：You'll shortly see the back of the person who has lately been something of a trial.（你很快就可以不再見到最近老找你麻煩的那個人了。）此外，這個習語還可以用于事物，表示“了結某事”，如：We'll soon see the back of the job.（這工作我們馬上就可以脫手不干了。）這些用法的習語性都比較強。

back有“支持”的意思，在表示此義時常與at連用。例如，“有人民給我們撐腰”既可寫成The people are our back，也可寫成We have the people at our back。但是由于at往往指目標，at the back of sb.或have sb. at one's back也有“追蹤、追捕”之意。如果把賓語換成物，即at the back of sth.，則指某事的起因或某事后面的主使者，如：Someone must be at the back of this.（這背后一定有人主使。）此時，at也可改成in。

back與on連用可以表示好幾種意思，首先要看主語是自己還是別人。前者on one's back字面義是“仰臥”，引申為“生病臥床”，與f lat連用還可以引申為“毫無辦法的情況”，如：None of my friends helped me even though they knew I was f lat on my back without a penny.（我的朋友沒有一個幫助我，雖然他們知道我身無分文、一籌莫展。）后者on sb.'s back則指“找某人麻煩使其厭煩”，例如：My boss is always on my back.（我老板老挑剔我的工作，煩死了。）on the back習慣上不用on the back of sb.，但可以說on the back of sth.，指“一件事（常為不幸之事）緊接著另一件”，例如：On the back of the loss of her child, her husband died.（她喪子之后，緊接著丈夫又死了。）

表人時用所有格，表事物時用of短語，這一規則也適用于與break連用的習語：表人的是break sb.'s back，表事物的是break the back of sth.，兩者有一義相通：“打垮、壓垮、挫敗”，如：The responsibility almost broke his back.（責任幾乎把他壓垮了。）One mistake broke the back of the whole plan.（一個錯誤使整個計劃受挫。）

break sb.'s back也可指“使人破產”，如：The last loss had broken Mr. Smith's back.（最后這項損失使史密斯先生破了產。）break the back of sth. 也可指“完成某事中最難或最主要的部分”，如：The young man f inally broke the back of the problem.（小伙子終于把問題的最難點解決了。）

如果back與up連用，則有“惱怒”的意思，這來源于貓憤怒時拱起背的形象，動詞用get、put、set均可，如：She is well-intentioned, but her tactless manner tends to put people's backs up.（她本意不壞，但態度不合適，容易惹人惱怒。）表示自己發怒時動詞常用get，即get one's back up，也可以說one's back is up。
