Short videos are seeing explosive growth in China and are gradually becoming one of the major ways that Chinese netizens are recording and sharing information.

With the rising popularity,China's Internetregulatorhasstrengthened monitoringafter some were found sharing harmfulcontent.

Kuaishou,a photo and video-sharing app popular amongrural communitiesand migrant workers（農(nóng)民工），allows users to upload short videos with a duration（持續(xù)時(shí)間）from 10 seconds to a few minutes each.The contentranges fromcooking,physical exercise and dancingtofamily gatherings.

“We are devoted to recording the daily lives of ordinary people,and giving them a stage to express themselves,”said Su Hua,founder and chief executive of Kuaishou,adding that the app is looking to improve its user experience and attract more new users.

Su said that 87 per cent of Kuaishou's users are of the post-nineties generation.The apprecommendspersonalised contentto users based on their browsing（瀏覽）history and preferences,with the help of AI technology.

Statistics from data research firm Quest Mobile show short-video platforms enjoyedsharpgrowth in China last year,with the number of usersexceeding410 million,up 116.5 per cent on the previous year.Total time spent on shortvideo apps accounted for5.5per cent of all time spent on mobile apps in2017—up from1.3per cent in2016.

Kuaishou's rival（競(jìng)爭(zhēng)對(duì)手）Douyin has joined the frenzy（狂潮）.The short-video app is owned by Beijing Bytedance Technology,which also owns the Toutiao news app.In addition to Douyin,Toutiao also has other short-video platforms such as Huoshan and Xigua.Both Alibaba Group Holding and Tencent have invested in video content or livestreaming start-ups（初創(chuàng)企業(yè)）.

However,this lightning-quick boom has led to a regulatory gap thatcaused concerns aboutthe risk of harmful online content,intellectual propertyviolationsandinadequate supervision.

On April 4 the Cyberspace Administration of China ordered Kuaishou and Huoshan to remove harmful content tocreate a clean online environment.The two appswerelaterremoved fromAndroid app stores and updates are no longeravailable.

The two platforms havemade public apologies,promising to examine their services and increase manpower in content review.This will include removing harmful content,blacklistingpublishers of inappropriate content,and prohibiting users under the age of 18 fromregisteringas livestreaminghosts.

Su said it was necessary for video-sharing platforms to strengthen uploaded video content monitoringbased on the law and regulationsbefore recommending them to users.Douyin has also promised to increase manpower in content review and to post more appropriate content.
