In a small village, a mechanical (of machine) cat called Ruffs looked after his kind, little owner, who had fallen ill from a lack of sunlight. Ruffs felt very sad to see his owner in her sad condition. He decided right then to ask the sun to come out.

With the help of a friendly kite, Ruffs traveled the dangerous journey to the sun's home. He politely asked the sun to shine on the world. To Ruffs' disappointment, the sun told him that only with the help of the wind could the sun get rid of the dark clouds and come out.

Unfortunately, when Ruffs found the wind, he learned that only when winter left could the sun come out to brightly shine. Ruffs was so sad he could not help choking on his sobs until his tears started to fall like rain on the cold ground. Slowly but surely, his warm tears became a vast current, melting all that was frozen.

Winter was washed away and spring came to take its place. Then the sun came out, showing his smiling face and sending sunshine down on every corner of the earth.

As soon as Ruffs' little owner felt the warmth of the sunlight, she recovered immediately. She had hardly awoken when she saw her blanket was wet with tears. She realized that it was Ruffs that had saved her. she took Ruffs in her arms, holding him tightly.

If English means endless new words, difficult grammar and sometimes strange pronunciation, you are wrong. Haven't you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a language?

According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain power. Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter. This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles.

The study also found the younger people learn a second language, the better the effect is.

A team led by Dr Andrea Mechelli, from University College London, took a group of Britons who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of “early bilinguals” who had learnt a second language before the age of five, as well as a number of later learners.

Scans showed that grey matter density(密度) in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference was.

“Our findings suggest that the structure of the brain is changed by the experience of learning a second language,” said the scientists.

It means that the change itself increases the ability to learn.

Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales, has researched the link between bilingualism and math skills.“Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible,” he said. “You are actually going beyond language and have a better understanding of different ideas.”

The findings were matched in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between the ages of two and 34. Reading, writing, and comprehension were all tested. The results showed that the younger they started to learn, the better. “Studying a language means you get an entrance to another world,” explained the scientists.

5. The main subject talked about in this passage is ________.

A. science on learning a second language

B. man's ability of learning a second language

C. findings that language learning can help brain power

D. language learning and maths study

6. The last sentence of the second paragraph is intended to ________.

A. say language learning is also a kind of physical labor

B. prove that one needs more practice when he (she) is learning a language

C. show the importance of using it when you learn a language

D. make people believe language learning helps grey matter work well

7. We may know from the scientific findings that ________.

A. the earlier you start to learn a second language, the higher the grey matter density is

B. there is no difference between a later second language learner and one who doesn't know a second language

C. the experience of learning a second language has bad effects on people's brain

D. the ability of learning a second language is changing all the time

8. The underlined word “bilingual” probably means ________.

A. researchers on language learning B. people learning foreign languages

C. people speaking two languages D. active language learners

My favorite English teacher could draw humor out of the driest material. It wasn't forced on us either. He took Samuel Johnson's dictionary, Addison's essays, and many other literary wonders from the eighteenth century and made them hilarious, even at eight o'clock in the morning. The thing that amazed me most was that the first time I read these works on my own, some of them seemed dead, but the second time, after his explanation, I couldn't believe that I hadn't seen the humor. The stories and poems and plays were suddenly filled with allusions (典故) and irony (諷刺) and hilarious moments. I learned more from him than from any other teachers.

My least favorite English teacher also made people laugh. Some students found him to be wonderfully funny. Many others did not. He assigned journals over a six-week period, to be written every day. At the end of the six weeks I had a notebook full of bits and pieces about my ideas, short stories, reactions to what we had read, and so on. Our teacher announced that we would be grading each other's journals. Mine was passed to Joe, that class clown, who always behaved in a funny or silly way. He saw it fit to make a joke of and said, “This writing isn't fit to line the bottom of a birdcage.” Our teacher laughed at that funny remark. It hurt me so much that the anger from it has driven my writing and teaching ever since.

So what makes the difference? Humor is one of the most powerful tools teachers or writers have. It can build up students and classes and make them excited about literature and writing, or it can tear them apart. It is true that humor is either productive or counter-productive and self-defeating.

9. What does the passage mainly discuss?

A. Teaching. B. Literature. C. Humor. D. Knowledge.

10. The underlined word “hilarious” in Paragraph 1 probably means ________.

A. funny B. tiring C. inspiring D. brilliant

11. With his favorite English teacher, the writer found it most amazing that ________.

A. his teacher was very learned B. his teacher was very humorous

C. the works by Johnson and Addison were very humorous

D. few were able to find humor in works by Johnson and Addison

12. The English teacher the writer disliked most ________.

A. was not able to make students laugh B. hurt his student's feelings

C. didn't let his students do the grading D. had no sense of humor

Farah was sitting in the kitchen going over the party list with her mother. The exams were over and Farah wanted to invite her friends for a party.

“Farah, aren't you going to invite Hafsa?” her mother asked. Hafsa had been her best friend since childhood.

“Mother, you know I am now a part of Purple Girls Club and we have some rules about people we can be friends with,” Farah answered.

“Really? And what are the rules?” her mother asked.

“Well, only very pretty girls can be part of our group. And Hafsa is so... you know... dark.”

“I cannot believe it,” her mother said angrily.

As Farah left the kitchen, her father called her from the living room.

Farah went to her father and paled when she saw the exam report in his hands. “Farah, what has happened to your grades? You have failed in Mathematics,” her father said.

Farah had no answer. The truth was that the activities of Purple Girls Club left her with very little time for studies.

“Farah, it says that you can take part in supplementary exams (補考). If your grades don't improve then, I'll cancel (職消) your trip to Spain.”

Farah went to her room and called Gina, the leader of Purple Girls Club. “Gina, can you help me to complete my notes before the exams?”

Gina laughed. “Exams? Who cares about exams?”

One by one, she called her friends in the club but no one seemed to care or wanted to help.

Farah knew Hafsa would help her. Farah also knew Hafsa had been hurt by her, but Hafsa said, “If you need any help, just let me know. We can study together till your exams.”

Next Monday, as two friends entered the school together, Gina called out.

“Farah, you know our rules. You cannot be friends with those who do not belong to our club.”

“Gina, I have a new rule about friendship,” Farah replied.

13. What rule is Farah's choosing a friend?

Different cultures

The cultures of the East and the West really distinguish each other a lot. __1__

The origin of the eastern cultures is mainly from two countries: China and India. Both of the two cultures are developed by rivers—the Yellow River in China and the Hindu River in India.

__2__

When the two mother rivers gave birth to the Eastern culture, another famous culture was brought up on the Mesopotamian Plain—the Mesopotamian Civilization. This civilization later on developed into the cultures of Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome. __3__ Like the Chinese culture, the European culture also crossed waters. When the British settled down in America, their culture went with them over the Atlantic Ocean. So the American culture doesn't distinguish from the European culture a lot.

__4__ Take the language system for example. In the East, most languages belong to the pictographic language while the Western languages are mostly based on the Latin system. Other causes like human race difference count as well. But what's more, due to the far distance and the steep areas between the East and the West, the two cultures seldom communicate until recent centuries. So they grew up totally in their own ways with almost no-interference (干擾) from the other.

The differences are everywhere. __5__ But different cultures make the world of 21st century more colorful. The cultural gap should not be the obstacle (障礙) to the civilization of human beings. It ought to be the motivation of our going farther.

A. Let us work together to keep a variety of cultures.

B. One important thing is to learn about other cultures.

C. And these two are well-known as the base of the European culture.

D. At the same time, some other differences add to the cultural differences.

E. This is because the culture systems are two separate systems on the whole.

F. They helped the two cultures develop for centuries and form their own styles.

G. They are obvious and affect people's ways of thinking and their views of the world.

The Chinese have used chopsticks for five thousand years. People probably cooked their food in large pots, __4__ (use) tree branches to remove it. Over time, __5__ the population grew, people began cutting food into small pieces so it would cook more quickly.

Food in small pieces could be eaten easily with twigs which __6__ (gradual) turned into chopsticks.

Some people think that the great Chinese scholar Confucius, __7__ lived from roughly 551 to 479 B.C., influenced the __8__ (develop) of chopsticks. Confucius believed knives would remind people of killings and __9__ (be) too violent for use at the table.
