II. 閱讀理解。(30分)
A
About five years ago I started at a new school when my family moved to Iowa. I was just a little excited, but I worried I would never fit in with the other sixth graders.
Lucy, a girl in my class, who I thought was not ready for change, didn't like me from the start. In fact, I was sure she hated me. I would ask her a question, and I could tell she thought I was a total fool.
My teacher made us sit by each other for the last term. Lucy was horrified (驚駭的). I didn't wear make-up (化妝品), and I didn't wear those terrible bell-bottom pants. I didn't exactly look like the coolest girl. But, I kept smiling at her, though she rolled her eyes, and I kept telling her she looked beautiful, even when she was angry.
Finally, Lucy let me talk to her, even in sight of her “cool” friends. She started telling me how beautiful I looked. I still remember that first time when she smiled at me saying that, and I smiled right back, telling her thanks. Lucy invited me over to her house for a party, and talked to me all the time instead of her other friends. Lucy, the girl who hated me, called me her best friend. After that, we still were good friends a whole year later.
I may move to Arizona after that, but I will never forget Lucy. It's funny—I still remember her birthday. She was a great friend. And to think, she considered me her enemy at first. Though it was hard, and it felt like I was wasting my time, and losing my dignity (尊嚴), I still smiled at Lucy when she made fun of me. I'm not stupid, I didn't think she was right in doing those things, but I still put up with it. And we became great friends.
About two weeks ago, I read a sentence by Abraham Lincoln: “Am I not destroying my enemies (敵人) when I make friends of them?” Immediately, I smiled, thinking of Lucy. That sentence just reminded me how great it was for me to change Lucy into my friend in that state of Iowa five years ago.
1. When the author started at a new school in Iowa, she worried ________.

A. By wearing makeup. B. By keeping smiling at Lucy.
C. By wearing bell-bottom pants. D. By sitting beside Lucy in class.

A. right of her to suffer when making friends
B. a waste of time to make friends with Lucy
C. a shameful thing to put up with what Lucy did
D. foolish of her to smile at Lucy all the time
4. What is the main idea of this passage?
A. Patience is important in making friends. B. Friendship needs to be cared for.
C. Making friends means losing enemies. D. Kindness can defeat any enemy.

Boys need friends, suffer when they don't believe they have any, and worry over the ups and downs of relationships. Many adults believe that somehow boys need friends less than girls do, in truth, though, no boy is an island; boys value their friends throughout childhood and adolescence (青年期) and are happier and healthier when they have solid relationships with peers.
Despite the common belief that girls are better at relationships, most boys consider their friends a very important part of their lives, and boys may actually be better at keeping friendships than girls are. A recent study of 10-to-15-year-old boys and girls found that girls' friendships are actually more fragile (易碎的). Girls tend to say and do hurtful things to each other more frequently than boys, and girls are more hurt by the end of a friendship.
Boys are the living definition of the phrase “peer group”; they love games with rules, competition, and doing things together. Boys seem to enjoy, even need the opportunity to test themselves against others, and many lasting friendships begin in karate (空手道) class or on the basketball court. Competence and skill are widely respected; being picked last for a team or left out altogether is an experience that can haunt (縈繞心頭) a boy for years.
As boys mature, the friendship becomes even more important, and it frequently widens to include girls. During the teen years, friends can become the most important part of a boy's life—and a part in which his parents are not included. The confusion of being a teenager leads boys to form close bonds with friends. There is the sense for many boys that a friend is someone who is “always there for me”, someone they can trust. They may be partners in crime (犯罪) or partners in study, but the friendship of adolescent boys can run surprisingly deep.
5. The common belief of adults is that boys ________.
A. don't care about others as much as girlsB. don't value friendships as much as girls

A. girls value relationships more than boys
B. most boys consider their friends very important
C. boys may be better at keeping friendships than girls
D. boys may be more active in a friendship
8. As a boy gets older, he tends to ________.
A. shift his focus from his friends to himself
B. leave his parents out of his friends
C. widen his circle of friends to include his parents
D. be confused about what a friendship is

Junelle Lynch knocked on more than 200 doors in the Gayln Manor neighborhood of Brunswick in recent weeks. Her aim is to collect hundreds of pounds of food for the Brunswick Food Bank.
“I like helping people a lot,” said Junelle, who celebrated her 11th birthday in June. With the support of her parents Isabella and Robert, Junelle walked along the streets with an orange grocery bag. Isabella always accompanies (陪同) her daughter. Isabella helps her daughter by car, so Junelle can empty her grocery bag when it becomes heavy. Junelle's friend, Destiny Williams, helped the first night, but he didn't turn up the rest of the time.
Neighbor Lynda Mallory donated food to Junelle. Mallory dropped noodles, canned (罐裝的) soup, vegetables and fruits into Junelle's bag. After visiting the last house and looking at what she collected, Junelle said she felt good about what she achieved with the help of her neighbors.
Working an hour a night three times per week, she has collected more than 400 pounds of canned and boxed food. This isn't the first year she's collected food. Junelle started nearly three years ago when, at 8 years old, she saw a collection box at a grocery (食品雜貨) store and decided to become involved. In her first year, she collected 80 pounds of food in the mostly undeveloped neighborhood, and 214 pounds the next year. The food helped feed many families.
When she isn't helping, Junelle is a straight-A student who snowboards, plays the trumpet, sings with the Brunswick Chorus, plays basketball and writes poems. She plans on spending her summer vacation attending a basketball camp.

Too many people want others to be their friends, but they don't give friendship back. That is why some friendships don't last very long. To have a friend, you must learn to be one. You must learn to treat your friend the way you want your friend to treat you. Learning to be a good friend means learning three rules: be honest; be generous; be understanding.
Honesty is where a good friendship starts. Friends must be able to trust one another. If you don't tell the truth, people usually find out. If a friend finds out that you haven't been honest you may lose your friend's trust. Good friends always count on one another to speak and act honestly.
Generosity means sharing and makes a friendship grow. You don't have to give your ideas and feelings. These can be very valuable to friends. They tell your friends what is important to you. By sharing then you help your friend know you better.
Sooner or later everyone needs understanding and help with problems. Something may go wrong at school. Talking about the problem can make it easier to solve. Turning to a friend can be a first step in solving the problem. So to be a friend you must listen and understand. You must try to put yourself in your friend's place so you can understand the problem better.
No two friendships are ever exactly alike. But all true friendships have three things in common. If you plan to keep your friends; you must practice honesty, generosity and understanding.
13. To be a good friend, what do you do?

Tips for Finding Your Perfect Job Online
◆ Know where to look.
You can't find the jobs if you don't know where to look. Start with aggregate sites (綜合網站). Just put “jobs” into a search engine and you'll get numerous hits. Thus, you need a way to narrow down your search sites. __1__ When you've found a good website, see if you can sign up for it to deliver new openings in your field to your email inbox; most job sites have that feature.
◆ __2__
While you may consider yourself an account executive (客戶賬目經理), the perfect job for you may be listed under a different job title. Try searching for synonyms, and if the site allows it, use category searches to get a broader look—just be sure you don't limit yourself by category either.
◆ Keep things professional.
When you've found the jobs you want to apply for, remember that applying online means your computer competency will be apparent. __3__ When you apply online, make sure that you use a professional email address. If your potential employers can't open your resume, they will likely just delete it.
◆ Keep track.
Whether you're applying online or in person, you need to keep track of the companies and positions for which you've applied. The ease of applying online makes it easier to send duplicates (副本) and forget the details of a job posting when you are contacted. If you are reached by email, the employer isn't a big deal, but if your potential employer calls, you will want to know whom you are talking to and about which position you are being contacted. This is especially important if you are giving out your cell phone number. __4__
◆ Follow up in the real world.
Don't get stuck in cyberland (網絡天地); follow up on jobs by calling. __5__ Even if you aren't right for the one you applied for, a follow-up call could give you a lead on a similar position.
A. Don't get stuck on the job title.
B. This will show you are serious about the position.
C. Limit yourself to the job title.
D. Lacking the ability of operating computers is a big advantage to you.
E. Keep a notebook to record a few details for each position you apply to.
F. The best way to find these sites is to search for your job title and location.
G. If you aren't sure, ask a friend for help or consider taking a basic computer skills course.
IV. 語篇填空。(10分)
閱讀下面材料,在空白處填入適當的內容(1個單詞)或括號內單詞的正確形式。

Anne hadn't been able to be outdoors for __3__ long a time that she had grown crazy __4__ everything to do with nature. For example, when it was warm, she stayed __5__ (wake) on purpose until half past eleven one evening in order to have a look at the moon for once by __6__(her). But as the moon gave far too much light, she didn't dare open a window. And another time, she happened __7__ (be) upstairs one evening when the window was open. She didn't go downstairs __8__ the window had to be shut. The dark, __9__ (rain) evening, the wind, the thundering clouds held her entirely in their power. One Sunday morning, it is sunny. My father and I went to a park. After showing the ticket, we went in. Everything in the park was beauty. We felt very happy. But suddenly I see a well-dressed man littering. I went up to pick the waste up and then dropped into a dustbin nearby. However, I was surprised to find out there was so much waste. It seemed as if I were walking into the world of rubbish. At this time I keep wondering why so few people have such bad habits. How will our city be like if these people don't get rid of the bad habits but if we won't do anything about it.
