Abstract:A Study of Physical Culture was written by Mao Zedong concerning the discussion of physical education, published in thejournal New Youth volume 3 No.2 with the signature of Er Shi Ba Hua Sheng. The whole thesis elaborates the significance to the moral education of contemporary college students with the guidance of the sports thought contained in the Maos thesis. The Mao Zedongs sports thought makes sense in moral education as follows: expanding the way of receiving ideological and moral education, increasing the accumulation of the collegesideological and moral knowledge through the strong bodies, cultivating tough will and character,so as to achieve the purpose of ideological and moral education.

A Study of Physical Culture, written by Mao Zedong,systematically elaborates the explanation ,utility and meaning of physical education and highlights its significance in strengthening the national constitution, promoting the military heroism and saving the national crisis.It is an indispensable historical document to study Mao Zedongs physical education.This thesis is the only one written by comrade Mao Zedong,which published in thejournal New Youth volume 3 No.2 with the signature of Er Shi Ba Hua Sheng. Therefore, how does it make sense in ideological and moral education of the current the colleges. The thesis elaborates the meaning on the two aspects such as the explanation of physical education , the utility of physical education.

一、the explanation of the physical education and the contemparary college studentsideological and moral education

The first part of A Study of Physical Culture introduces the explanation of physical education.“Since the human has habituated on the earth, the human knew how to protect their own lives even if they were ignorant. ……The composition of the human body is the similar to the animals, however,the longevity of animals is shorter than that of the human. We can see the main cause is that they are failed to control the limitation of their daily meals. On the contrary,the human has their own living limitation and intensified awareness of being healthy, so the physical education emerges in their daily life. The physical education has relation to the awareness of protecting their lives, which differs from the protection taken by the animals.The human protect themselves by the healthy life style.

Whats the physical education? “The physical education helps to maintain life.” Namely, we must know how to extend the longevity of our life. First of all, we must learn the meaning of life at its heart.East and West differ in their interpretations of it.Chuang Tzu followed the example of the cook, Confucius drew on the lesson of the archer and the charioteer.In Germany,physical education has gained the great popularity. Fencing has spread all over the country. Japan has bushido. Moreover, recently, following the traditions of our country, judo has developed there to an admirable degree. When we examine these examples, we see all the activities take the physiology into consideration. Learn more about the structure of the human body and the context of the humans operation.Their physical education abide by the procedure of examining their own problems in order to curb their deficiencies and make up for the immature part of the body.Through the whole procedure, we can help our body to develop in all-round and smooth way.We should bear three tips in our mind: persistence, obsession and adjustment.So the connotation of the physical education is that the human beings choose healthy lifestyle, which helps our body to develop in all-round and smooth way.To achieve the goal of living healthy lifestyle, we must possess the character of persistence in the first place and then the spirit of struggle. The explanation shows the physical education not only means doing some physical exercise, but cultivating our temperament, which is obvious feature of ideological and moral education. Hence, the explanation of physical education increases the manner of receiving the knowledge of ideological and moral education, which can be utilized by the teachers in daily teaching.

二、The utility of physical education and ideological and moral education of the current college students

Firstly, physical education strengthens the body. The chairman Mao once pointed out the physical education means the humans regular movement. Owing to the different environment, some people are inborn with weak body, while others with robust body. However, if they hold on doing exercises, they can strengthen their body and have robusty body. One often hears it said that the mind and the body cannnot both be perfect at the same time, that those who use their minds are deficient in physical health and those with a robust body are generally deficient in mental capacities.That talk is just absurd. Because the regular exercises strengthen the body ,the physical condition has been improved in return.Therefore, the minds and body can be perfect at the same time.

Secondly, physical education enhances our knowledge

There is a saying: Civilize the mind and make savage the body. The knowledge consists in knowing the things in the world, and discerning their laws.In this matter we must rely on our body, because direct observation depends on the ears and eyes, and refletion depends on the brain.The ears, eyes as well as brain may be considered parts of the body.when the body is perfect, then the knowledge is also perfect. Hence, the knowledge is indirectly acquired through the physical education.

Thirdly, the physical education harmonizes the sentiments.

There is a saying: Those whose limbs are defective are often enslaved by sentiments and incapable of matsering them. Those sentiments arent defined as the personal attachment to other people, while the personal temperament .The physical education can ease their mood, and then they are faced with something that is unwanted, uncertain. Chairman Mao set an example to explain the healthy body is conducive to the correct sentiments. Those whose senses are imperfect are often enslaved by the excessive passion, while whose senses are clear can be capable of matering the things.

Fourthly, the physical education strengthens the will. The great utility of physical education lies precisely in this. The will can be seen as the pioneer for the success in their career. Great achivements are based on the tough will and persistence.The principal aim of physical education is military heroism.Such objects of military heroism as courage, dauntlessness, audacity and perseverance are all matters of will. The will also highlights in the moral education.Hence, as the means of the teaching method, the physical education cultivates the tough character of the students.

In all, the physical education not only strengthens body,but enhances knowledge as well as the tough will and perfect sentiments. The physical education strengthens the body of the current college students, at the same time, tempers their will and sooths their own potential pressure and psychological emotions.As its essence, the process of physical teaching can cultivate the perfect temperament and tough will of the college students.

三、Conclusion

A Study of Physical Culture expounds the relationship among physical education, moral education and academic education-“moral education and academic education are based on and attached to physical education; Without physical health, there is no morality and intelligence.”Physical education contains moral education and intelligence education. It is a must to resort to physical education as a tool to realize the purposes of moral education and academic education. “Physical education places the top priority”. Without the physical health, there is no “knowledge and morality”. “Strong body can better the improvement of ones knowledge and morality.”Thus, it can be seen that the Mao Zedongs sports thought provides the new perspectives into the ideological and moral education of contemporary college students. The physical connotation and function through physical education, mixed with the ideological and moral education can feasibly build the physical health, cultivate the strong will, healthy character and emotion, and realize the purposes of the ideological and moral education.
