JEXA protests against shutdown
The plans for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games include the use of Tokyo Big Sight as a media center, resulting in a 20-month shutdown. This means that 232 exhibitions will be cancelled, and 78,000 companies (mostly SME’s) will lose JPY 2 trillion (US$ 18.2 billion) in revenue. The Japan Exhibition Association (JEXA) urges the Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG), Olympic Committee, and Japanese Government to allow all the affected exhibitions to take place on the same scale as usual. Besides a protest outside the TMG offices, JEXA launched a petition, asking for support.
Becoming a green expo centre
Rimini Expo Centre has taken another step on its way to becoming a green expo centre. In November 2017, the electric vehicle charging columns that Italian Exhibition Group has installed at the Expo Centre debuted. Six are already fully operational, while a seventh will be installed soon. The charging points are identified by special signposts and positioned to make them as easy as possible to use.
The columns take their place alongside another recently completed project: the installation of 850 new LED lighting fixtures. Thanks to this project, the power used for lighting has been reduced by 66%, with an annual saving of 360,000 kWh, while the environment has benefited with a reduction of over 120 tons/year of CO2 emitted into the atmosphere.
