Aedas

Aedas

Aedas

Aedas

Aedas projects along Belt and Road

Keith Grifths Chairman

Keith Grifths is the founder of Aedas with over 35 years experience designing for Asia. He has designed award-winning successful projects for most of the leading developers in Asia and his experience includes high-rise, mixed commercial, retail and masterplanning as well as airport and civic buildings. His passion for design extends into his many lectures, publications and academic work upon the appropriate directions for urbanisation and cultural identity. Andrew Bromberg Global Board Director

Motivated by the desire to inspire and uplift the everyday lives of people, Andrew Bromberg strived for this goal through architecture. His works directly explore how to improve and extend the public realm. Boundaries between tradition public and private thresholds are often blurred and extended to enrich the experience of transitioning into a building. Experience and discovery shape the buildings both in response to the context and environment and to the inner celebration of the typologies themselves. Instead of presenting a singular experience, Andrew tends to build in layers which allow varying degrees of interpretation and enjoyment, and reveal themselves in a journey through the spaces that the buildings loosely defne. His buildings intertwine and merge with the nature. Without compromising the altruistic and unconventional qualities, Bromberg's projects are always optimised to ensure viability.

Frank McGoldrick Global Board Director

With extensive experience in many diferent sectors, Frank McGoldrick has a deep understanding of design and the construction industry in general. His forward-looking strategies have created numerous opportunities for Aedas in a wide spectrum of sectors and markets and he has forged strategic alliances with government agencies, developers and engineering partners around the world. Frank sees ample opportunities for international architects to fourish and contribute to the built environment all over the world but particularly in Asia presently, where massive urbanisation is developing on an unprecedented scale. Frank continues to lead many internationally signifcant projects but with a particular focus on integrated resorts and transport infrastructure.

Kevin Jose Global Board Director

Kevin has accumulated over 30 years of design experience in various sectors such as retail, mixed-use, office, infrastructure and masterplanning with a number of award-winning projects. He has a strong understanding of international retail trends and has combined it with sensitivity towards the local communities to create works that refect a fne balance in unique design with spatial efciency and fnancial returns for the owners. Kevin continues to lend his expertise in a variety of projects in Southeast Asia, using his perceptive knowledge of the region together with international expertise to inject vibrancy into the feld of architecture design.

Max Connop Global Board Director

Max Connop has over 20 years of experience in architecture spinning across infrastructure, commercial, residential and masterplanning. His works are characterised by a strong emphasis on performance and sustainability. For every project he undertakes, Max embeds the ‘green DNA' into the design to ensure that it is a world class sustainable solution. As a progressive green building/sustainability adviser, he has signifcantly infuenced Aedas' industry-leading sustainable initiatives. His extensive experience in leading and managing major infrastructure projects including airportconcourses for the award winning Hong Kong International Airport which sets a new benchmark for green design for airports.

Ken Wai Global Board Director

Ken Wai is passionate about architecture. Ken directs the designs of a wide spectrum of architectural projects on both national and global scales. His specialisation lies in holistic mixed-use developments, major infrastructure facilities, high end ofce towers, luxurious hotels as well as bespoke private residences. Over the years he has produced numerous well acclaimed designs which earned him various awards and honours, including Sina Plaza in Beijing, Bravo PARK PLACE in Guangzhou and THR350 in Hong Kong. He is currently looking after Aedas' business operations in Greater China. His aspiration is to continue developing sustainable architecture that is both energy-saving and environmentally friendly for the future generation.

Tony Ang Global Board Director

Tony Ang co-founded Aedas' Singapore ofce in 1995. With his shrewd business acumen, the Singapore ofce has grown considerably and he has also expanded the company's business reach to various Asian cities such as Myanmar, Malaysia,China, Indonesia, India and Vietnam. While heading the statutory and business development aspects of the business, Tony often brings deep insight to projects that he oversees. Very often, he has led his teams to go the extra mile of assisting developers and building owners to maximise the value of their projects, including award winning projects such as 8 Napier and 313@somerset in Singapore.

Andy Wen Global Board Director

Born in Taiwan, Andy Wen received his Master of Architecture degree from the University of Pennsylvania in United States and a Doctoral degree from Beijing Tsinghua University in China before returning to Taiwan to teach in Ming Chuan University as the Head of Architecture Department. His tremendous passion for merging innovation, sustainability, culture and heritage to create unique and timeless architecture which appropriately responds to its location and culture has earned him numerous international design excellence awards.

Milestone of Aedas

How did Aedas grow?

Since 1985, Aedas has grown from a two-person company to a global design company with a reputation for quality design. We are unique in that we have many offces which truly understand their local culture and environment whilst designing at an international level.

Our growth since 1995 was fueled by Asia. We explored new countries and cities and established new ofces to provide a full and professional service to our clients. Aedas has a wide network of ofces with a wide spectrum of building types to balance the ups and downs of the markets. Balancing our work load in this way has been very important to our stability and success.

What were the key changes to Aedas as it grew?

Aedas continuously adapts as we grow and the world changes. In the 1990s our expertise in rail and airport design led our expansion from 50 staf in Hong Kong to 250 in Southeast Asia and the Middle East. In 2002 Andrew Bromberg joined the company. His designs quickly gave Aedas an international design stature. Also in 2002 we opened the London ofce and rebranded as Aedas which established us as a global brand and facilitated our growth by 2009 to 1,500 staf in 18 cities. In 2009 we established ourselves frmly in China with a sophisticated, nationwide marketing team which has led to over 60% of our work now being in China.

How does the recent China downturn afect Aedas?

Even in downturns such as 1997, 2003 and 2008 Aedas has maintained a steady employment and growth for our staf. Our China ofces are now stable following the difculties caused by the contraction of the China economy and Aedas is expanding into new building types in China to compensate. We will increase our work in technology hubs, education and cultural facilities.

How are Aedas' goals maintained?

Aedas evolves rapidly to accommodate a changing world. We have designed a company which is truly open and inclusive with a fair, honest and collegiate atmosphere and where everyone is respected and can make an input to the company. The decisions we make are discussed and agreed with our 40 Directors and shareholders who are deeply involved with their staf. Therefore Aedas' goals are shared goals.

Recent Plan of Aedas

Aedas has maintained a buoyant work load through the very difcult year of 2015 as China's economy continued to slow and Europe sufered further setbacks. We have been successful in broadening our work scope and redirecting our marketing eforts to overcome the economic slowdown.

In China we acquired more tech parks and headquarters ofce work to supplement our mixed-commercial and residential work, whilst in Southeast Asia we have been appointed to new projects in Indonesia, Vietnam, Philippines and Malaysia.

In Hong Kong and Singapore we maintained our flow of traditional infrastructure work and enjoyed an increase in work indigenous to these two cities. Our Middle East ofces are also growing to match the regions' increased activities. Our new London office and Aedas Arts Team brings Aedas an exciting portfolio of cultural buildings including theatres, concert halls and museums. We foresee that China willrequire many world class cultural venues in the future.

As an international architecture and design company, Aedas' geographical spread and scope of work are well suited for us to participate in China's Belt and Road trade route initiative. Aedas has designed and completed projects in cities along the Belt and Road over the years, including airports, railway stations, cruise terminal and other renowned commercial landmarks. These were happened far before the Belt and Road initiative frst proposed by the Chinese government in 2013. Aedas is well placed on the Belt and Road with ofces along the routes with the ample opportunities from the initiative. In 2016 Aedas will be increasing our presence and work along the Belt and Road.

At times of economic downturn cities rejuvenate through careful interventions in the existing urban fabric. With the introduction of the 2014-2020 New Urbanisation Policy,China is undergoing a period of adjustment in its urbanisation policies at the same time as the Western world is striving to understand how it can solve its cities' problems through greater density. Aedas experience in high density planning and architecture,as well as our international knowledge and local application can help developers and authorities alike to develop new urban forms and concepts to meet these new demands upon our cities. We have developed a series of coordinated papers, lectures and workshops to share our ideas upon urbanisation in the 21st century and look forward to continuing work to improve our urban environment in the years to come.

Aedas' involvement and development along the Belt and Road

The Belt and Road initiative, frst proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping in 2013,is a trade and infrastructure network that aims to revive the land and maritime Silk Roads. The overall concept is to facilitate closer economic cooperation in the region through infrastructure development and beyond, which will ofer ample opportunities for architects to design for cities along the Belt and Road.

Aedas is already working with Chinese developers such as Greenland in Iskandar and Malaysia, and China Merchants upon the ports of Djibouti and Dalian along the trade routes.

Back in the 1980s when Aedas established its business in Hong Kong, there was a resurgence of the ancient sea route from Hong Kong, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur then up to Sri Lanka centred on developments, railways and airports. Significant developers from Hong Kong went down south to carry out a lot of developments, and in turn the Malaysian, Singaporean and Indonesian developers came develop in Hong Kong and China. Aedas followed the developers and the Mass Transit Railway as they ventured out from Hong Kong and we soon became an international architectural design frm with ofces along the Maritime Silk Road from Shanghai,Hong Kong and Singapore in the East to Dubai, Abu Dhabi in the Middle East and London in the West. Our ofces in Chengdu and New Delhi and work throughout West China will serve the overland Silk Road well into Western Europe.

We understand the cities we design for. With his knowledge about the very cities along the Belt and Road, Aedas' Chairman Keith Grifths is appointed Honourary Advisor for the inaugural Belt and Road Summit which was held in May 2016 in Hong Kong. He also shared in a video produced by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council that as the gateway to and from China and with enormous connectivity to Southeast Asia, Hong Kong is well placed on the Belt and Road.

Over the land Aedas was naturally drawn to western China as the Chinese government has been pushing to develop its vast west land. We have designed a number of mixed-commercial projects in Chengdu, Chongqing and Kunming in the past decade, which positions us well for the revival of the land-based trade route.

lnterview with Aedas Chairman Keith Grifths

What are your key considerations for Aedas' structure?

When I set up 30 years ago I was concerned to create a design house which would enable designers to create the best designs in an environment which stimulated, recognised and incentivised them. We have designed a company which is truly open and inclusive with a fair, honest and collegiate atmosphere and where everyone is respected and can make an input to the company.

What changes do you see in the future for Aedas?

China is entering a period of more considered and sophisticated planning and construction which will require our designers to have communication and language skills to match.

Kuntai Wangjing Plot 2 Exhibition Centre, Beijing China

Our competition in China will be the local design institutes which now have world class designers with high density expertise surpassing that of most international design houses. I anticipate that Aedas will employ more mainland Chinese designers and our China ofces will grow substantially.

I foresee that the Western economies will have difculty to recover to their pre-2008 fortunes and that China will become the world's leading economic power in the next fve years. Aedas is ideally positioned to enjoy the design opportunities and challenges that will come from the growth of China and indeed Asia. Aedas will grow a strong network of China ofces in the next fve years which will become the backbone of our global company.

Our company has a strong and flexible structure which allows it to benefit from changing markets. I believe that in the next 10 years Aedas will become deeply involved in forming the new sustainable cities of China and that, through this knowledge and expertise we will develop into a globally respected institution embedded in all the major cities of the world.

Keith Grifths' TEDx Talk - Surprising Cities

Keith Grifths, Chairman of Aedas, revealed his prediction on our ever-changing lifestyles and the future of cities. He gave a thought-provoking speech ‘Surprising Cities' at the TEDx conference in Shanghai, China and sparkled inspiring conversation. “While our entire lives have become faster and more convenient, our cities are having a hard time adapting to our new demands for fexibility, variety and convenience,” he said. Nowadays city dwellers are demanding for increasing vibrancy, efciency and connectivity. While we enjoy living in the cities because there are many choices of job, entertainment, housing and community, diferent people have diferent priorities and choices of lifestyles. The future cities will adapt and accommodate our needs.

Keith predicts that the future cities will consist of high density city hubs that are built around the CBDs, over subway interchanges and major road intersections. “In these city hubs we live, work and recreate within a short distance and much shorter journey time,” he said. The land outside the city hubs, on the other hand, will be developed into lower density residential communities with parks, community centres and educational facilities for families.

Here are the 5 characteristics of a city hub:

1. High Density

Five hundred million people have been urbanised in China in the last 20 years. Pressure on land use requires cities to be compact, efcient and high density. The city hubs will be high density work-live-recreate communities where all facilities are within walking distance.

2. Over Existing Transportation Nodes

A city hub requires good transport connections such as at major road and subway intersections.

3. Multi-functional with High Adaptability

Mixed-use buildings accommodate many uses in fexible and adaptable formats. A rich mix of usages and connectivity may create a vibrant, focused and sustainable city hub.

4. Multiple Planes

Modern high-density buildings are porous and dissolve the ground plan into multi public decks, offering interpenetration of landscaping, light and air. Basement levels, ground and upper levels of buildings are activated to provide an enhanced and extended public realm to accommodate the movement and recreation of all the many people.

5. High Connectivity

Buildings will dematerialise as they become more open, public and connected at many levels to promote public activity and life.

The mix of diferent building types already exists in our cities - mixed-use complexes,SOHO, loft, elevated parks, public rooftops, but we need to join the dots and develop live-work-recreate developments in areas of high connectivity across the city. “With public spaces at multiple levels, elevated parks and bridge links as connectors, we are going to create exciting three dimensional, connected spaces where people can enjoy all the happy choices and serendipity of a modern city life,” Keith concluded.
