A few weeks ago, a friend from an unknown Smile Groups sent me $120 to do good things. Since then I have used the money in the US. It has helped families and strangers and generally raise a lot of smiles. They have warmed my heart, but none was so much as the gift I was able to give an hour ago.
I was in a charity (慈善) shop, looking at the second-hand books. It happened that the bookshelves were next to the toy shelf. I noticed a group of poorly dressed women standing behind me. As they looked through the cloth shelf, a little girl about three years old came over to the shelf. Her attention was caught by a toy pram (手推車) at once. She spoke to her mother and she asked the shop assistant how much it cost. $3 was the answer.
The mom looked down at her child, perhaps thinking what she still had to buy and how much money she had left. Then she shook her head. The child did not behave as badly as some might. Being told “no” was not new for her but she could not keep the disappointment from her face.
I had a total of $ 5 in my pocket. I touched the mother on the shoulder, put the money in her hand and said, “Buy her a doll, too”.
I did not wait to see the end. After all, it was not about being thanked. I walked out of the shop and into the sunshine.
The money the friend gave me was to help me find happiness of the world. Was there any better way, I wondered, to get so much happiness for so little money than to buy a little girl a doll and a toy pram to sit in it?

At present, more and more people are crazy about traveling. Why do people travel? “To see more of the world,” many people would say. According to the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), more than 1 billion people traveled to another country in 2015. In 2015, Chinese people traveled abroad 30 percent more than in 2014. The prosperity (繁榮) of the tourism industry can also bring both our country and foreign countries great economic benefits (經濟利益). Chinese people usually join large tourist groups and visit several countries in one trip.
Chinese people don’t just travel for sightseeing. The China International Travel Service Company said that all their tour trips sold out a month before Christmas Day. Stores offered discounts (打折) during that time, so shopping in Europe and the United States is popular among Chinese travelers.
In December, China is going through a very cold winter. So many people like to go to some countries in Southeast Asia because the weather there is quite pleasant.
The improvement of living standards means more Chinese can travel abroad. But many of them don’t have a sense of public manners. A report by Living Social website in March 2012 even listed Chinese as the world’s second worst tourists.
If you want to change that bad name, remember to avoid the following: littering, spitting, snatching (搶奪) bus seats, line-jumping, taking off shoes in public, talking loudly and smoking in non-smoking areas. Besides, we should learn some necessary manners of foreign countries.

Many companies use guards and expensive alarm systems to protect their property (財產). Soon a new kind of protection will be used—robots. Engineers have been working on the first mobile robots for businesses. The robots will patrol (巡邏) factories, warehouses, and museums at night.
The mobile robots will move around slowly on wheels. They will be able to detect (探測) people through walls and pick up sounds, such as breaking glass. They can be fixed with loud sirens (警笛) to frighten thieves, or radios to signal police or guards.
To protect a building, a robot will have to move around without knocking into the walls. Information about the building will have to be stored in the robot’s small, built-in computer. A floor map could be programmed into the computer’s memory, for example.
A mobile robot will not be able to do everything. Unlike human guards, it will not be able to climb stairs, open doors, or move along rough ground. It won’t be able to tell the difference between friends and enemies. Because of that, people will have to be barred from the area it patrols.
One kind of mobile robot will be able to “sense” whether a chair or a box has been moved and go around it. This robot will also judge size well enough so that it won’t send an alarm if a cat crosses the room. And if someone tries to steal this robot, it will sound a loud, painful siren. The three-foot-tall robot will be hard to steal anyway. It will weigh about 200 pounds.
US companies pay almost $10 billion a year to protect their property with alarm systems and human guards. Mobile robots may be cheaper.
