Text 1
M: You are late again, Miss Smith. Don’t you have a watch or something?
W: Yes, I thought that I had set the alarm clock for seven o’clock, but it rang an hour later.
Text 2
W: I’ve run out of money.
M: How much do you want?
W: Ten pounds. Oh, no, eight pounds will be enough.
Text 3
W: Would you like something to drink, sir?
M: Yes, I think so. This lady will have a cup of tea and I’ll have a bottle of beer.
Text 4
W: Hi, Tom. How is everything?
M: Not bad, except for my toothache.
Text 5
M: I never drink water without ice.
W: Don’t you think that’s bad for your stomach?
M: But I’ve been doing it for the whole summer, especially at lunchtime. It seems to be no problem.
Text 6
W: What are you going to do when you graduate, John?
M: I’m not sure. My dad says I should work in information technology. I know something with computers.
W: Is that what your dad does?
M: Not really. He is an engineer.
W: How about you? What are you interested in doing?
M: Well. I’m interested in medicine. I’d love to be a doctor.
W: Yeah, what subject are you good at?
M: Math is my best subject. And I’m also pretty good at science.
Text 7
W: Excuse me, Jim. It must be hard work to be a middle school student now.
M: Certainly. I’m going to take the most important examination and I must prepare every subject very well.
W: I guess you can’t have enough sleep.
M: Yes. I have to get up at six o’clock every morning and go to bed very late.
W: Why do you get up so early?
M: Because I want to remember and recite something at that time.
W: Well, how do you spend your spare time?
M: I usually go to the library.
W: You are really a good boy.
M: Thank you.
Text 8
W: Excuse me, I’m a reporter from Daily News. Can I ask you some questions?
M: Sure.
W: What do you think is the best restaurant in your town?
M: New Restaurant.
W: Why do you think so?
M: Because it has the freshest food.
W: What about Blue Sky? Some people think the service there is the best.
M: Oh, no, I think it’s the most expensive. And Family is the cheapest.
W: I see. Thank you.
M: You’re welcome.
Text 9
(A knock at the door.)
W: Come in, please.
M: Hello, Kate, where is Jane? I want her to translate this article.
W: I’m afraid she can’t, Jack.
M: Oh, why?
W: She’s studying for an exam.
M: An exam? But the exam is over.
W: I mean, she’s learning to play the piano in another school.
M: I see. Are you going to learn it, too?
W: No, I’m not, not this year. But I’m thinking about taking a course next year.
M: That’s a good idea. Is it expensive?
W: No, not very. Anyway, it’s worth it.
Text 10
I had a strange experience while I was working in Germany. One day, I was walking down the street in a small town. I was wearing a thick scarf because it was snowing. Suddenly I heard somebody call my name. When I looked around I saw that it was Tim. I met him last summer in New York. I was American and lived in New York, and Tim had been on holiday in my hometown. After the holiday he had returned to Germany, and we hadn’t been in touch since then. Tim had no idea I was in Germany and he didn’t even live in this town. He had just been visiting a friend. But he recognized me even though it was snowing and I was wearing a thick scarf. After that we stayed in touch and became good friends.
