Word Frequency Statistics and the Chinese-Russian Translation of Political Literature

—A Comparative Case study of the Russian Version of China’s Government Work Report and the Russian State of the Union Address

Abstract：Translation of the Chinese political literature is gaining ever-increasing importance in China’s translation academia. Based on word frequency statistics and quantitative analysis, this paper presents a comparative case study of the Russian version of China’s Government Work Report and the Russian State of the Union Address to find the overall word frequency of the Russian State of the Union Address is slightly higher than that of the Russian version of China’s Government Work Report. Additionally, the paper explores the word differences in the process of comparison to propose some countermeasure strategies in translating Chinese political literature into Russian language.

An Analysis of the Characteristics of the Sentence Structure of the Russian Version of CPC Literature Based on the Russian Translation of Report on the Work of the Government

Abstract: With the typical example of Report on the Work of the Government, CPC literature is kind of political writing with refined wording and close logic. Both the Chinese version and Russian translation have the unique stylistic and cultural traits. The traits of the sentence structures of CPC literature can be demonstrated in the following aspects, i.e. predicate expression, relations between the subject and the object, logical relations between sentences, sentence structures and so on. The sentence structure of the Russian version of CPC literature is typical of static predicate structure and the passive voice sentences, hypotaxis with the centre of the predicate verbs outstandingly shows the narrativity, objectivity and logic of the political writings.

A Bibliometric Analysis of Current Research Situation on Communist Party of China Literature（1957-2015）

Abstract: As China grows into a country of strong national power and international influence, the international community is eager to get to know more about China’s achievements and experience. The translation and transmission of Communist Party of China (CPC) literature are important ways for China to promote its international communication and build a systematic discourse oriented toward international audiences, also play an important role in successfully telling Chinese stories, transmitting Chinese voices and interpreting Chinese characteristics. And all this cannot be achieved without a good knowledge of the current research situation on CPC literature. This paper investigates the findings of a bibliometric analysis of journal articles, master and doctorate dissertations researching on CPC literature over 58 years available from CNKI to looks into how the research objects and perspectives have changed over time. The results cast light on both the achievements and the existing problems in terms of research, as well as ways of solving these problems.

A Editorial Corpus-based Analysis of China English in on Sentence Level

Abstract: According to the data drawn from the self-built corpus of editorials, this paper, based on functional stylistics, tries to explore the existence of China English variety from the perspective of sentence by comparing the editorials written by advanced English learners whose mother tongue is Chinese and those written by native speakers of English. The results of comparative analyses of sentence length, passive voice predicates, logical connectors in the two corpora show that there are significant differences between the editorials written by these two kinds of editors. Thus China English variety exists and the differences may be caused by English teaching models in China, Chinese grammar, socio-cultural factors, etc.

Embodiment Hypothesis and Body Metaphor: Problems with the Embodiment Hypothesis of Conceptual Metaphor Theory

Abstract: Based on body metaphors as data from ordinary language, media discourse and technical discourse, this paper, by adopting an empirical methods, attempts to argue against the embodiment hypothesis of conceptual metaphor theory, pointing out that not all the conceptual metaphors are based on bodily experiences, not all the things concerned with the body are direct experiences, and not all the experiences can be embodied. On the basis of empirical evidences and analysis, the paper argues that the problem with the embodiment hypothesis mainly originates from the misleading and confusing definitions of such concepts as embodiment and body, and suggests that such concepts should be used carefully.

The Modality Construction of Author-Reader Interaction in English Research Articles

Abstract: The nature of language use is dialogic. The speaker-listener/writer-reader interaction exists both in spoken and written texts. This paper, based on the theory of modality in systemic functional linguistics, explores further the author-reader interaction in research articles. The paper analyses the conclusions in research articles of English linguistics to reveal the interactive and interactional modes of author-reader interaction with the modality construction.

A Study of Morphological Rhetoric in Literary Translation Based on Lovell’s Translation of Lu Xun’s Works

Abstract: Literary translation with aesthetic quality conveys both meaning and feeling. Morphological rhetoric is a special rhetorical behaviour with the artistic effect through the unique form and appearance of language to attract readers’ attention, and its translation effect decides the degree of textual aesthetic actualization. This paper, based on the translation of Lu Xun’s works, illustrates the applicability of morphological rhetoric in literary translation from four aspects of the form of words or characters, punctuation, diagram and symbol, and the arrangement of words or sentences. It concludes that the translator should be expert in actualization and reproduction of morphological rhetoric according to specific themes and contexts to reduce the loss of textual aesthetic value, so that aesthetic actualization process of spiritual and formal resemblance in literary translation can ultimately be achieved.

Metaphor Translation in Lu Xun’s Work Based on the Comparison of Yangs’, Lovell’s and Lyell’s Translations of

Abstract: Lu Xun, the greatest writer in 20th century, is famous for metaphors in his works, especially in. Among all the translations, Yangs’, Lyell’s and Lovell’s versions are the most influential. With stylistic analysis of metaphors in, this paper will compare the three translations in four aspects of graphological metaphor, lexical metaphor, syntactic metaphor and register metaphor. The paper concludes that the three translations can be classified into three categories in term of metaphoric consciousness. Yangs’ metaphor-dormant translation neglects metaphor and pays more attention on the accuracy of translation. Lovell’s metaphor-sporadic translation although notices metaphor, she pays more attention to the choice of word and aesthetics of word. However, Lyell is conscious of metaphor the most. His metaphor-volcanic translaiton reproduces the metaphors in the novel to represent thoroughly Lu Xun’s literary style and metaphorical meaning.

On the Translation of Reduplicative Words in Classical Chinese Poetry Based on Feibai’s Translation of Li Qingzhao’s poem

Abstract: This paper illustrates the translation of reduplicative words in classical Chinese poetry based on the English translation of Li Qingzhao’s poemby Feibai from the aspects of lexis, phonetics and syntax within the framework of the cohesion and coherence of parataxis or hidden hypotaxis in super-sentential text. Reduplicative words are not only confined in literary works, but also frequently found in modern oral and written Chinese in cross-cultural communication. The proper translation strategies can introduce richer expressions into English poetry, and also help spread the culture and national softpower of China.
