第一節(共10小題;每小題3分,滿分30分)

A

It must have been around nine oclock when I drove back home from work because it was already dark. As I came near to the gate I turned off the headlamps of the car so as to prevent the light from swinging(晃動)in through the window and waking Jack, who shared the house with me. But I neednt have done so. I noticed that his light was still on, so he was awake anyway—unless he had fallen asleep while reading. I put the car away and went up the steps. Then I opened the door quietly and went to Jacks room. He was in bed awake but he didnt even turn towards me.

“Whats up, Jack?” I asked.

“For Gods sake, dont make a noise,” he said.

The way he spoke reminded me of someone in pain who is afraid to talk in case he does himself a serious injury.

“Take your shoes off, Neville,” Jack said.

I thought that he must be ill and that I had better humour(遷就)him to make him happy. “Theres a snake here,” he explained. “Its asleep between the sheets. I was lying on my back reading when I saw it. I knew that moving was out of the question. I couldnt have moved even if Id wanted to.” I realized that he was serious. “I was relying on you to call a doctor as soon as you came home.” Jack went on. “It hasnt bitten me yet but I darent do anything to upset it. It might wake up. Im sick of this.” he said. “I took it for granted that you would have come home an hour ago.”

There was no time to argue or apologize for being late. I looked at him as encouragingly as I could and went out to telephone the doctor.

A. Jack had fallen asleep. B. Jack was reading a book.

C. The light in Jacks room was not turned off. D. Jack was not in the room.

45. What can we infer from the passage?

B

One afternoon I toured an art museum while waiting for my husband to finish a business meeting. I was looking forward to a quiet view of the art works.

A young couple viewing the painting ahead of me chatted nonstop between themselves. I watched them a moment and decided the wife was doing all the talk. I admired the husbands patience for putting up with her continuous talk. Distracted by their noise, I moved on.

I met with them several times as I moved through the different rooms of art. Each time I heard her constant burst of words, I moved away quickly.

I was standing at the counter of the museum gift shop making a purchase when the couple came near to the exit. Before they left, the man reached into his pocket and pulled out a white object. He extended it into a long stick and then tapped his way into the coatroom to get his wifes jacket.

“Hes a brave man,” the clerk at the counter said. “Most of us would give up if we were blinded at such a young age. During his recovery he made a promise that his life would change. So, as before, he and his wife come in whenever theres a new art show.”

“But what does he get out of the art?” I asked. “He cant see.”

“Cant see? Youre wrong. He sees a lot. More than you or I do,” the clerk said. “His wife describes each painting so he can see it in his head.”

I learned something about patience, courage and love that day. I saw the patience of a young wife describing paintings to a person without sight and the courage of a husband who would not allow blindness to change his life. And I saw the love shared by two people as I watched this couple walk away hand in hand.

46. The young couple were at an art museum ___ .

A. to show their love B. to appreciate art

C. to discuss paintings D. to describe paintings

47. Why did the author move away quickly each time he heard the young wife speaking?

A. He was in the hope of visiting more rooms. B. He was in a hurry to buy some gifts.

C. He was tired of the nonstop talking. D. He was not interested in the art show.

48. We can infer from the passage that the husband ___ .

A. was not born blind B. couldnt stand his wife

C. knew nothing about art D. completely depended on his wife

49. After hearing what the clerk had said about the couple, the writer was ___ .

A. encouraged B. excited C. touched D. annoyed

50. The passage is mainly about ___ .

A. the importance of art B. good manners in public

C. patience of a husband D. love between a couple
