
It is described as "noble" because of its noble plumage. Mikado pheasant is covered by pure black plumage and will show a purple-blue metallic luster when exposing to light from different angles. Coupled with the unique pheasants strutting attitude, as if "emperor" parade, it has a more well-known and domineering name - imperial pheasant. No wonder the former inhabitants of Taiwan inserted this bird feathers into their hair, it was a status symbol!
Mikado pheasant does deserves the representative of motherland's endemic bird species in Taiwan region. It is also because Mikado pheasant is so rare and precious, it used to be the object of hunting. Now, Mikado pheasant has been well protected and the population has increased.
