Writing—style Awareness and Word Partnership in Learning English

【Abstract】Some Chinese students have learnt English for many years，however，they still fell hard to learn it well，sometimes it is because they do not have the writing-style awareness and do not pay enough attention to the word partnership.

What do “writing-style awareness” and “words relationship” refer to？ As we know，learning a foreign language means learning ones culture.The ultimate aim of learning it is to communicate and use it，but not to cope with the exams.Therefore，to learn a foreign language，we should not only learn the language rules，but we should also learn the communicating rule and speaking rule.And writing-style awareness in addition.So what is it？ According to Chinese，it means that you should say different words to different persons and in different occasions.For example，we are teachers for students，daughters for parents and colleagues for the other teachers in the college.We have different identities in front of different people，so we should use different words and different manners to communicate with them.When we speak Chinese，we will regulate ourselves to adapt to different persons，so will we do in speaking English，which is called “writing-style awareness”.Otherwise，they will feel impolite even though you didnt have any mistakes in speaking.For example，if I go to visit somebody，and his home is very hot.But if I am not so familiar with the host，I will not say “Please open the window！”.That is because he will feel that I have not good enough manners，but I will say “Its very hot here！”，and then he will open the window.Although we use different languages，the aim and function are the same.The native speakers will not accompany you to practice speaking English every day，and you need to create the English atmosphere yourself.The Chinese students will say “please put on your shoes”，however，the British will just say “shoes on！”，very simple！ And the British will not say “Thank you！” as we Chinese do，they will say “Cheers！” to replace it.In the British restaurant，when the waiters serve you，you should say “Cheers！”，which means “Thank you！”.You can not master all the sentences at once，only if you should look and feel by yourselves，.Have a look at listening and reading materials to get to know how they will behave in a certain occasion，and memorize it.Thus，you can be proper and correct when you want to speak.

Then what does “word partnership” mean？ It refers to the skill of memorizing the words.Many students will just recite the vocabulary list，and become very familiar with the words，but they often know this word and forget another.And when they need them，they couldnt use these words at all.So their compositions lack vocabulary and attraction.The “word partnership ” will tell you how to memorize the new words and how to use them.When reciting，you shouldnt memorize one word singly，but put it in the whole sentence or the whole passage to see the “word partnership” between them.While reading，pay attention to the fact that what kind of adjectives and what kind of nouns can be used together，what kind of verbs and what kind of adverbs can be put together，etc.Some Chinese students have memorized a lot of adjectives，but they can only use some of the easiest ones，like“important”、“great”、“good”and“bad”，etc.And they just use “very” when they want to emphasize it.They seldom use “extremely”、“completely”、“totally”、and“dramatically”or even they dont know how to use them.We think the reason is that they didnt pay enough attention to the fact that these words can be used in certain occasion.For example，some Chinese students will only use “great competition”，but in fact，some other phrases，like“intense competition、fierce competition、growing competition”，can also have the same meaning.Consequently，when you learn English，you must know the “word partnership”，that is to say the relationship between one word and another word，just like that you should look at who is often together with whom.Keep at it，you will have a perfect writing.Once a famous linguist said “what you say in English must be that you have heard，and what you write in English must be that you have read.” Thus，your English will be pure.Otherwise，your English will be always Chinglish.

In the process of learning English，we will meet a lot of challenges，writing-style awareness and word partnership are essentially important in learning English.Only if we can read more，understand more，and know more，can we become better in both writing and speaking English.
