Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,

And sorry I could not travel both

And be one traveler, long I stood

And looked down one as far as I could

To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,

And having perhaps the better claim,

Because it was grassy and wanted wear;

Though as for that the passing there

Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay

In leaves no step had trodden black.

Oh, I kept the frst for another day!

Yet knowing how way leads on to way,

I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh

Somewhere ages and ages hence:

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—I took the one less traveled by,

And that has made all the difference.

Robert Frost（羅伯特·弗羅斯特，1874—1963）是20世紀最受歡迎的美國詩人之一。弗羅斯特早年生活比較坎坷，曾在美國的新英格蘭地區當過鞋匠、教師和農場主。他的詩歌一開始在美國本土沒有得到重視，但卻得到了英國作家、評論家的肯定，后來才引起了美國文學界的關注，此后，其詩歌在英美兩國均大受好評。他曾贏得四次普利策獎和許多其他的獎勵及榮譽，還曾在1961年肯尼迪總統的就職典禮上朗讀自己寫的詩歌，也因此被稱為“美國的桂冠詩人”。

弗羅斯特作品的一大特色就是善于運用眼前看似平淡無奇的事物，去表達一個深刻的哲理。正因為他擅長于用具體的事物表達抽象的概念，所以他的詩就易為讀者接受和了解。另外，弗羅斯特喜歡運用傳統的詩歌模式和韻律，但在用詞上更簡潔、平實。《未選擇的路》寫于1915年，當時弗羅斯特正準備從英國回到美國。這首詩描述的是一個所有人都要做的選擇—一個決定人生道路的選擇。弗羅斯特選擇了更荒蕪的路，經歷了痛苦、磨難，旅途中常常回想起那條未選擇的路。“要是我走那條未選擇的路，也許我就不會這般痛苦？”詩人寫出了漫長人生路上的種種迷惘、惆悵。作者在詩中提到兩條路幾乎是一樣的，兩條路都想走，但最終往往只能選擇一條路，并沿著這條路走下去，不會再有走另一條路的可能。我們很容易會聯想到人生的道路，一旦選擇了腳下的路便很難回頭，所以與其幻想著另一條路的風景，不如走好腳下的每一步。……
