Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the frst for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Robert Frost(羅伯特·弗羅斯特,1874—1963)是20世紀最受歡迎的美國詩人之一。弗羅斯特早年生活比較坎坷,曾在美國的新英格蘭地區當過鞋匠、教師和農場主。他的詩歌一開始在美國本土沒有得到重視,但卻得到了英國作家、評論家的肯定,后來才引起了美國文學界的關注,此后,其詩歌在英美兩國均大受好評。他曾贏得四次普利策獎和許多其他的獎勵及榮譽,還曾在1961年肯尼迪總統的就職典禮上朗讀自己寫的詩歌,也因此被稱為“美國的桂冠詩人”。
弗羅斯特作品的一大特色就是善于運用眼前看似平淡無奇的事物,去表達一個深刻的哲理。正因為他擅長于用具體的事物表達抽象的概念,所以他的詩就易為讀者接受和了解。另外,弗羅斯特喜歡運用傳統的詩歌模式和韻律,但在用詞上更簡潔、平實。《未選擇的路》寫于1915年,當時弗羅斯特正準備從英國回到美國。這首詩描述的是一個所有人都要做的選擇—一個決定人生道路的選擇。弗羅斯特選擇了更荒蕪的路,經歷了痛苦、磨難,旅途中常常回想起那條未選擇的路。“要是我走那條未選擇的路,也許我就不會這般痛苦?”詩人寫出了漫長人生路上的種種迷惘、惆悵。作者在詩中提到兩條路幾乎是一樣的,兩條路都想走,但最終往往只能選擇一條路,并沿著這條路走下去,不會再有走另一條路的可能。我們很容易會聯想到人生的道路,一旦選擇了腳下的路便很難回頭,所以與其幻想著另一條路的風景,不如走好腳下的每一步。……
