On April 12, 1981, Columbia, the first shuttle developed by US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) entered the orbit around the Earth for the first time. The central part of the shuttle is a winged orbiter, which can launch vertically, and when re-entering the Earth's atmosphere, it can land like an airplane. Columbia consists the first aircraft on formal service in the US shuttle fleet. Its launch officially opened the plan of NASA Space Transportation System. However, during the 28th mission codenamed STS-107 in 2003, Columbia lost contact with the control center in reentry stage, and was later found exploded and disintegrated in the sky over Texas.
