Song Jian, the academician delivered a speech in the naming ceremony, extended his appreciation to the Purple Mountain Observatory of Chinese Academy of Science and encouraged Chinese astronomers to continue to explore the mysteries of the universe
On March 16, "Song Jian star" naming ceremony and academic report, joint sponsored by Chinese Academy of Engineering, Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation, Purple Mountain Observatory of Chinese Academy of Sciences was held in Beijing. Song Jian, born on December 29, 1931 is a prestigious and respected scientist enjoying a high reputation. He has made a systematic, creative achievements and contributions in cybernetics research, space technology and population control theory etc. On October 8, 2014, an asteroid, international number as 210210 got approved by International Nomenclature Committee to be officially named "Song Jian star". This asteroid was discovered in Xuyi observation station in Purple Mountain Observatory on August 16, 2007. It orbits between Mars and Jupiter orbit, with a diameter of 400 ~ 1400m, and a scale of 8 × 1010kg ~ 3.5 × 1012kg.
In the academic report meeting after the naming ceremony on March 16, Song Jian, the academician made an enthusiastic interaction with the astrophiles from the Beijing Second High School, the Affiliated High School of Beijing Institute of Technology, Pu Ti Branch of Beijing Fourth High School. He explained carefully the knowledge of astronomy and aviation to the students and encouraged them to learn so as to grow into someone who can make contribution to the country in the future.
