1. swim against the tide/current 逆流游泳 / 反潮流，逆潮流

Literally： to swim in a direction opposite to the flow of the water

e.g. She became exhausted， swimming against the tide.

Figuratively： to do sth. that is in opposition to the general movement of things

e.g. Why can’t you cooperate？ Do you always have to swim against the current？

（Antonym： go with the flow順應潮流）

2. sink or swim 不自救，必沉淪

to fail or succeed

（Alludes to the choices available to sb. who has fallen into the water）

e.g. It’s too late to help Ethan now. It’s time for him to sink or swim.

3. keep one’s head above water 使頭浮出水面 / 維持生計 / 跟得上工作進度或要求

Literally： to keep from drowning when swimming or floating

e.g. I was so tired I could hardly keep my head above water.

Figuratively： to manage to survive， especially financially

e.g. We have so little money that we can hardly keep our heads above water.

Literally： to jump into a swimming pool where the water is over one’s head and one needs to be able to swim
