一個夏天，14歲的少年Duncan（Liam James飾）跟著媽媽Pam、媽媽的男朋友Trent及其女兒一起去Trent在海邊的小屋度假。像大部分離異家庭兒女一樣，Duncan不喜歡媽媽的男朋友。Duncan發現自己和Trent的朋友們格格不入，原本就沉默寡言的他變得更加郁郁寡歡。直到他在一次單車出游中遇見了Owen（Sam Rockwell飾）。Owen是當地水上樂園的工作人員，在Owen的邀請下，后來Duncan成了水上樂園的一名兼職員工。在那里，他認識了新的朋友，度過了歡樂的時光，同時也和鄰居家同樣遭受家庭問題困惱的女孩Susanna（Anna Sophia Robb飾）越走越近。在一個夜里，Duncan發現了Trent的秘密，他和家庭的矛盾也越來越深……

Duncan： No.

Trent： Let me ask you something. On a scale of one to ten， what do you think you are？ Duncan？ I’m asking you how you see yourself. Scale of one to ten.

Duncan： I don’t know.

Trent： I can’t hear you， bud. You have to speak up.

Duncan： I don’t know.

Duncan： A six.

Trent： A what？

Duncan： A six！

Trent： I think you’re a three. You know why I think you’re a three？ You don’t know what would make me say that？

Duncan： No.

Trent： You don’t know？ You have no idea？

Duncan： No.

Trent： You’ve got to speak up， buddy.

Duncan： No！

Trent： Since I’ve been dating your mom， I don’t see you putting yourself out there， bud. Meeting kids your own age. And from what your mom tells me， you just seem content to hang around her apartment. Is that a fair 1）assessment？ You’re just happy to not do anything？’Cause， damn， that’s…to me that is a three. But， the good news I’m here to tell you， since there’s going to be plenty of kids and plenty of opportunities for you to take advantage of at my beach house this summer. It’s a big summer for all of us， really. You， your mom. Me， Steph. One day， we could become a family. So， what do you say？ Let’s try to get that score up. Huh？ Aim higher than a three？ That sound good？ You up for that， buddy？

特倫特：鄧肯？鄧肯？鄧肯，你在睡覺嗎？

四人到達目的地，Trent給Pam母子介紹了鄰居Betty，這是Duncan和Betty的女兒Susanna第一次見面。

Trent： Are you kidding me？

Betty： Thank God！ Another night of drinking alone and I was going to kill myself！

Trent： Hey！

Betty： Yeah. I’m off the wagon again. Accept it and move on. Oh， my God. Press my laundry. Oh， Trent.

Trent： How’re you doing？

Betty： I’m good. I like this.

Trent： Thanks.

Bettty： I love your ride. Does the eight track still work？

Trent： What this？ This is exactly the car my dad used to drive us in.

Betty： Old and 2）crappy.

Trent： Do you have any idea how much I’ve spent on this car？ This is cherry. This is a cherry car.

Betty： A car salesman with bad taste. Shocker. Hi. I’m Betty. Pam： Hi， Pam.

Betty： Trent’s probably already talked crap about me.

Pam： No.

Betty： He did， didn’t he？ It’s okay if he has. What did he say？ I’m loving this.

Pam： Oh， thank you.

Betty： I couldn’t pull it off. My hair seems to hate me.

Pam： Oh.

Betty： That’s where you’re supposed to say， “Your hair’s lovely.”

Pam： Oh， it， is. It is lovely.

Betty： Okay. I like her.

Trent： What’s not to like？

Betty： Susanna， Trent’s here. This is his new girlfriend， Pam.

Pam： Hi， Susanna.

Betty： Say， “Hi.”

Susanna： Hi.

Betty： Yeah， but you know what， don’t come down. Just stand there， 3）brooding. Oh！ You’ve brought me a man. How thoughtful. Hello， sailor. Who is this in all his awkward stage glory？

Pam： This is my son， Duncan.

Trent： Everybody lends a hand.

Betty： Oh， my God. I was going to name my youngest Duncan， but my ex-husband thought it was too 4）nerdy. So， we went with Peter. Which， personally， I think is worse. But， it suits my son， so... Oh， don’t worry， you wear the name well.

特倫特：開什么玩笑？

Duncan不喜歡和大人們待在一起，又與同齡的孩子格格不入，他再次碰到了同樣有家庭問題的

Susanna。

Duncan： Hey. Sorry about that. I didn’t...

Susanna： I don’t care. It’s not like we were using our inside voices.

Duncan： That’s cool. That’s cool.

Susanna： So， you’re a big fan of REO Speedwagon？

Duncan： What？

Susanna： Can’t Fight This Feeling？

Duncan： Oh， no. My mom must have put that on there.

Susanna： Oh， and you just got to it and thought， “What the hell. I’m going to sing the shit out of it， anyway” ？

Duncan： Something like that.

Susanna： Sucks here， huh？

Duncan： It’s okay.

Susanna： It sucks.

Duncan： No. Totally. It blows. So much. It’s tough， yeah.

Susanna： All right.

Duncan： It feels like it’s going to be a hot summer.

Susanna： Oh. I thought we were done.

Duncan： Oh. I was just thinking about that earlier. The hot thing. And it just came to me again. So， I said it.

Susanna： Okay. Well， if anything else comes to you again， I will be inside.

貝蒂：蘇珊娜，把紗門關上！我快被蚊子給吃了！我不喜歡你這個樣子，小姐！你爸爸在的話就不會這樣。

蘇珊娜：嘿。

鄧肯：嘿，抱歉，我沒有……

白天，Duncan無處可去，只能獨自待在魔法水上樂園默默一人旁觀著別人的快樂時光。在這里，他認識了管理員Owen。

Owen： I’m afraid I’m going

to have to ask you to leave.

Duncan： What？

Owen： Yeah， you have to take off. I’m getting complaints. You’re having too much fun. It’s making everyone uncomfortable.

Duncan： Okay.

Owen： Hey， hey！ Whoa， whoa. I’m just kidding. Wow. That wasn’t even my best stuff. Are you for real？ Listen， I can tell you’re in complete awe of our picnic table. It is one-of-a-kind except for the 200 other ones here that are exactly like it. But there is more park to be seen. First things first. As much as I’m a fan of Tuff Skins， we’ve got to get you a swimsuit. Seriously， when’s the last time you bought jeans？

Duncan： My mom buys my jeans.

Owen： Good. Always take things literally. Water Wizz Waterpark. Built in the summer of ’83， it’s the last 6）bastion of everything that time period stood for. In fact， it was 7）decreed by its creator that this place shall never age. On his 8）deathbed， he said， “I don’t want this place re-painted or updated. I don’t even want it brought up to code. And the minute someone tries， it needs to be destroyed.” We actually have a nuclear bomb for just such an occasion. Bought it off the Russians. Really？ Still good with all that？ Even the Russian thing？ That’s Cold War. It’s kind of dated. All right， that was a waste of a bit.

Caitlin： Hey.

Owen： Hey.

Caitlin： Some kid threw up near Crazy Tubes.

Owen： What？ Why is this the first I’m hearing of this？ Damn it， woman！ Caitlin， Duncan. Tony， Mary Beth.

Caitlin： Hi， Duncan. Also， I need you to reorder more mats. Owen： Did it.

Caitlin： Finish the work schedule for next week.

Owen： Did it.

Caitlin： Change all the 9）filters.

Owen： Done.

Caitlin： Okay， so you know， I’m going to check all that stuff， right？

Owen： Then， in that case， I didn’t do any of that.

Caitlin： So， I’m doing it.

Owen： It’s called 10）delegation， baby. I read about it in a book about it. That’s the one you wait for， my man. Oh， yeah. She looked back. She likes me.

Duncan： No. You don’t have to.

Owen： Come on.

Duncan： Yeah？

Owen： Yeah.

Duncan： No， it’s too much trouble.

Owen： Duncan we’ve got to start having faster conversations. Throw your bike in the back. I’d help you out but I got my hands on the 11）wheel. Giving you a ride. I think that’s enough. Where’d you get that？ The princess collection. Hey， easy， easy！ The car’s just the right amount of shitty. So， what brought you to the water park？ Not many kids head our way when the ocean’s their backyard.

Duncan： I don’t know. I guess there’s not much for me at home. How long have you been working there？

Owen： Oh！ The park？ I’ve always been there. Ever since I was a small Cambodian child. Of course， that was after’Nam. I was in the shit. Then I joined the circus to become a clown fighter. I know about 46 ways to kill a clown. I hate clowns. I’m kidding except for the part where I really do hate them. Nice teamwork. I’m exhausted.

Duncan： Thanks for the ride.

Owen： Hey， thanks for the memories. Hey， Evel Knievel. You’re probably busy or not interested， but I need somebody to be a 12）floater at the park. You know， do some odd jobs， clean up some 13）vomit. What do you think？

Duncan： Definitely. Awesome. Yeah. I mean if it’s too much trouble， you totally don’t have to， but...If you need someone...I mean…

Owen： Duncan.

Duncan： Yes.

Owen： There you go. Tomorrow. 9：00 a.m.

歐文：嘿，怎么了，牛仔小子？想要搭一程嗎？

鄧肯：不用了，謝謝，我有自行車。歐文：你住哪兒？

鄧肯：在漢普頓的海邊。

歐文：那很遠。還有，國慶節人們都開得很瘋狂。把你的自行車扔到后面去吧。

鄧肯：不用了，沒關系的。

歐文：來吧。

鄧肯：真的嗎？

歐文：是的。

鄧肯：還是不用了，太麻煩了。

歐文：鄧肯，說話爽快點。把你的自行車扔到后面去。我想幫你，但是我的手得握住方向盤。搭你一程，我覺得夠了。你從哪兒弄的？公主系列？嘿，慢點兒，慢點兒！車里的破爛夠多的了。那么，你為什么來水上世界？沒多少孩子會來我們這里，因為他們后院就是海。

鄧肯：我不知道。我覺得我家里沒有。你在這兒工作多長時間了？

歐文：哦！在水上樂園嗎？我一直在這兒。我還是個柬埔寨小孩的時候就在這兒了，當然是在越戰后，那時的我一團糟。然后我加入了馬戲團，成了一名小丑斗士。我知道46種殺死小丑的辦法，我討厭小丑。我在開玩笑，除了我真的討厭他們之外。合作得真不錯，我累壞了。

鄧肯：謝謝你搭我一程。

歐文：嘿，謝謝你留下的回憶。嘿，克尼維爾，你可能太忙或沒有興趣，但是樂園里需要個臨時工，你知道，干些雜活兒，清理嘔吐物什么的。你覺得怎么樣？

歐文：鄧肯。

Susanna： Hey. Peter.

Peter： Yeah.

Susanna： You want to go chase ghost crabs？

Susanna： Duncan？ Any interest？

Duncan： Yeah. Sure.

Susanna： When I was younger， my dad used to bring me down here to do this all the time. He’d fill my head with all these useless facts about ghost crabs. Like， did you know they’re 14）omnivorous？ Basically， they eat both animals and vegetables. My mom jokes， “Leave it up to your dad to be interested in a creature that goes both ways.” So， do you want me to keep talking or are you going to say something eventually？

Duncan： My mom doesn’t smoke pot.

Susanna： Yeah. That’s the power of this place. It’s like spring break for adults. I think that’s what really kills my mom. Not that my dad left， but that he’s got someone and she doesn’t. So， is your dad seeing anybody？

Duncan： Yeah， she’s a lot younger.

Susanna： Classic.

Duncan： They’re just getting situated in San Diego. You know？ New place. So， he says it’s not a great time right now. But I’m going to go visit him soon once he gets settled the stuff. It’s supposed to be awesome out there.

Susanna： California. That’s cool.

Duncan： Yeah.

Susanna： So， where is it you go？

Duncan： Go where？

Susanna： On your sexy， pink cruiser？

Duncan： Nowhere.

Susanna： Oh. I see.

Duncan： No， I...I just...

Susanna： It’s okay. Let it be yours. Good night.

Duncan： Yeah， good night.

蘇珊娜：嘿，彼特。

Duncan發現Trent與別的女人有染，Pam也有所察覺。在一次派對上，Duncan當眾揭穿了Trent，并鼓勵Pam作出反抗。眼看二人即將和好，Duncan非常不解，帶著Betty的兒子Peter闖入魔法水上樂園為一名員工舉行的告別派對。一夜狂歡之后，他向Owen吐露了心聲。

Owen： You were right. We do sell coffee. I said you could hang out for a little bit but sunrise of the next day is where I have to draw the line. You gotta go home.

Duncan： I wish I could stay here forever.

Owen： You’re going to love the winters. They’re pretty 15）spectacular. Painting houses until it gets too cold， bar backing at some dive， talking to 16）inanimate objects.

Duncan： I’m serious.

Owen： Yeah. So am I. There’s a whole world out there for you， Duncan. Don’t settle. Not yet.

Duncan： I don’t have anywhere else to go.

Owen： Yeah？ I bet that’s not true.

Duncan： This is the only place I’m happy.

Owen： What’s going on？

Duncan： I hate him.

Owen： Who？

Duncan： Trent. My mom’s boyfriend. He said I was a three.

He asked me what I thought I was on a scale from one to ten. He called me a three. Who says that to somebody？

Owen： Somebody who doesn’t know you.

Duncan： I didn’t want to have to answer！ I shouldn’t have to answer！

Owen： Listen to me. That’s about him， man. That’s all about him. It’s got nothing to do with you.

Duncan： Yeah？ How do you know？

Owen： ’Cause I know. Okay？ Don’t worry about how I know. My dad was the same way. That’s why I don’t like patterns and rules. And that’s why you can’t buy into that shit. You gotta go your own way. And you， my friend， are going your own way.

歐文：不了解你的人。

歐文：聽我說，那是他的事，全是他的事，跟你沒有任何關系。

鄧肯：真的？你怎么知道？

歐文：因為我就知道，好嗎？別擔心我是怎么知道的。我爸爸也一樣。那就是我為什么不喜歡模式和規則，那就是為什么你不能相信這些廢話。你得走自己的路，我的朋友，走你自己的路。

Duncan回到度假小屋，得知假期提前結束，Pam和Trent已經和好，他們將立即啟程離開，Duncan感到很失望。

Trent： We were worried about you， buddy. Listen. Let’s just forget about last night. All right？ Start over. A clean slate. Sound good to you， buddy？

Steph： I hope you’re happy now.

Duncan： What’s going on？

Pam： We’re leaving. I need you to get your stuff.

Duncan： Mom， I’m sorry.

Pam： I know. Me too.

Duncan： But， why do you and I have to go？ The summer’s not over.

Pam： Duncan.

Duncan： We can stay somewhere else. I don’t understand.

Pam： We want to leave early， so that’s what we’re doing！ Duncan： So， we’re going with them？

Duncan： We’re leaving with them.
