The Application of Teaching Aids in Primary School English Teaching

Abstract: This paper introduces some kinds of teaching aids and their functions in teaching. It emphasizes that the use of teaching aids is to reduce teachers’ burden and also help students to absorb knowledge better. This paper highlights the principles that should be followed and teaching aids can give full play to the effect only when used properly.

【摘 要】教具是小學英語課堂不可或缺的一種重要資源和教學手段。本文基于教學實例闡述了教具的種類以及在使用教具過程中需要注意的問題,并強調使用教具是為了減輕教師負擔同時使學生更好的吸收新知。教具的使用需要遵循一些原則,而教具只有使用恰當才能完全發揮作用。

Introduction

A teaching aid is something a classroom teacher uses in her class to help students improve reading and other skills, reinforce a skill, or to make learning fun. Teaching aid is a very important tool for the teachers to teach well.

1. The function of teaching aids

1.1 Useful to arouse students’ interest

The teachers show the abstract and dull narration in a vivid way by using PPT, video, food, models, cards, pictures and headwear, etc. that students can acquire knowledge better, so teaching aids can arouse studying driving force naturally and stimulate the enthusiasm best.

1.2 Beneficial to raise students’ reading and speaking ability

In order to bring the standard and perfect pronunciation into the class, the teachers can use radio especially the language materials with music that attract students deeply. Also, the video can provide some wonderful pictures and attract students much better. Therefore, it is more effective, more interesting, more accurate and effective than students just read the books and listen to the teachers.

2. Kinds of teaching aids

There are several types of teaching aids to be utilized in classroom. Material objects include food, toys, and models and so on. Using classroom maps for teaching aids is a great thing to do. Textbooks often have maps in them, but they will be smaller and harder to read. Flash cards can be used to enhance students’ memory.The teachers can use small alphabet charts on student desks to aid in learning the alphabet. Charts can be large enough to mount on a wall. Wall charts can be used for whole group lessons.

3. Some principles to be followed

3.1 The principle of science

3.1.1 Consistent to the teaching aims

When teaching the sentence: He/She has short hair. The teachers can use cartoons to be their teaching aids, and lead the students to describe in English, and then play a guessing game. This kind of courseware is link closely to the teaching objectives.

3.1.2 Timely and appropriately to use

Nowadays we encourage the class atmosphere to be rich and vivid, so there’s a measurable problem. The teachers pursue the effect of rich and vivid blindly, they rely on the teaching aids too much. The teachers show the aids cannot too soon that the students will be distracted. It is better not to make the teaching aids too large, and shouldn’t take out too sudden and put down too soon.

3.1.3 Be visual and easy to understand

The teachers can make the content materialization and visualization with the use of teaching aids, and the students can easily be attracted by the aids. It is not only save class time, but also make a condition for students to perceive, understand and remember.

4. The principle of interest

4.1. Various functions

The teaching aids cannot only be as exhibits, they should also can be touched, operated and used, such as flash cards, and then the students will be full of interest.

4.2. The keep of novelty

It is not enough for teachers to choose the original objects in life, they can deal with the teaching aids in vision, auditory sense, tactile sense and the sense of smell to show the exaggerate properly and out of the ordinary, so it will arouse students’ interest in study much better.

4.3 The principle of practicability

In teaching fruit and describing their colors, a teacher used the teaching aids cleverly. She prepared some colorful papers and some piercing papers with the shape of fruit. She asked students to pick the relevant colorful paper and say: “I like red/yellow/green.”,then go back to their seats. And the teacher showed the piercing papers and students say the words of fruit. The teacher gave the order immediately: “green,green/red,red,come here.”, the students with colorful papers run to the teacher when they heard the order.

Just some ordinary colorful papers and easy piercing pictures, it is so easy but bring great convenient, it is a multi-purpose content and also save time and labor.

Conclusion

The key point of teaching aids is to develop talents of students, enhance the teaching results and increase the teaching quality. So we should command the tendency that teaching aids are developing toward a positive direct, to make the teaching aids as a popular means, and also remember not always the more, the better.
