- Passage 1 -

The Tiger Hill is said to be the most attractive spot of historical interest in Suzhou. It used to be called the Hill of Emergence from the Sea. The Tiger Hill is the burial place of He Lu, King of State Wu, who founded the city of Suzhou and made it as his capital.

A legend says that since the King of Wu loved swords, his funerary objects included 3000 swords. Historical records tell us that 100,000 soldiers and civilians were put to carting earth from the lakeside to build his mausoleum. It is said that three days after the King’s funeral, a white tiger was seen crouching (蜷伏) on the hill.

During the Eastern Jin Dynasty, the Tiger Hill formed part of the country estate (財產) of Wang Xung and his brother Wang Min. Later the Wang brothers converted their estate into a monastery and named it Tiger Hill Temple. It was called Cloud Rock Temple during and after the Song Dynasty, until Emperor Kangxi of the Qing gave the monastery its present name, the Tiger Hill.

Fighting Germs
